A little bit of history...
The creation of this thoroughly English institution is credited to a lifelong friend of
Queen Victoria, Anna Maria Russell, who was looking for a means of avoiding hunger
pangs in the long gap between an early lunch and a late supper.
Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it is
around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained
of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for
people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in
the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and some light snacks, taken
privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.
Due to our tremendous pride in this great tradition, our executive chef has remained
faithful to the classic combination of finger sandwiches, scones served warm, and
sweet pastries accompanied by a remarkable selection of wonderful loose leaf tea. Our
ingredients are painstakingly sourced, skilfully prepared and served fresh each day.

tea and morsel of food as well as some of the little secrets that make Afternoon Tea at

Egyptian Mint
A well rounded caffeine-free peppermint tea with no bitter aftertaste, Egyptian Mint
is perfect for cleansing the palate and re-energising the body after a meal.
Citrus Camomile
Novus Citrus features hand sorted whole camomile of the highest quality, blended
with the equally soothing and stress relieving properties of lemongrass. of hibiscus
and dried fruits that produces a sweet tart fruit infusion.
Persian Pomegranate
Capturing the unique flavour of Persian Pomegranate delivers a succulent herbal
brew. This fruit has exceptionally high levels of polyhenolsantioxidants.
Spicy Rooibos
A caffeine free super grade Rooibos blend with Brazilian Pepper, Cinnamon,
Cardamom, cloves and a hint of orange. It is fresh with subltle warming spice notes, a
real energiser and afternoon treat.

Attention to detail
Attention to detail runs throughout Afternoon Tea at Oakley, from the careful selection of the finest
ingredients to the standard and design of our crockery and cutlery. No aspect of this very special meal
escapes the attention of our team.
Delicate balance
You might notice there is always a consistent balance between the thickness of the bread and the filling
in our sandwiches, so that the filling is the same depth as the carefully sliced bread. Unlike bread sliced
for toasting, ours is laterally sliced so that it retains its shape, and is a pleasure to look at and eat.

We always serve a choice of four delicious sweet pastries. They change week by week
according to the availability of the very finest seasonal ingredients and are made
fresh each day by a dedicated team of pastry chefs whose sole purpose is to prepare
these delicious treats for your enjoyment.
Scones
The Oakley’s scone recipe is a timeless classic, carefully refined over generations.
Served freshly baked and warm, we offer a plain, raisin and a seasonal scone with a
soft, yielding texture and a colour of warm white gold. The scones are accompanied
by clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd.
Jam first, or cream?
It’s been a topic of much debate over the generations. In our view, it is the cream that comes first,
followed by a teaspoon of strawberry jam. Of course this is just our own opinion, and the order of
ceremony will always remain entirely a matter of the guest’s own taste and preference.

Our cakes are made daily by our pastry team using free range eggs, jersey cream and
the very finest Valrhona chocolate, they change regularly throughout the seasons and
are a mix of traditional and modern favourites.
Please note some of our dishes may contain nuts, nut traces,
dairy products, yeast, maize, eggs and other standard additives.
If you have a food allergy and/or intolerances and want to know
the ingredients
please notify your server before your order, so that we can
arrange with the chef for a suitable alternative.
