IYOURTHEIRMYSPACE group exhibition took place as part of The Apprentice Master Program,
a Dutch mentorship program that pairs recent art graduates with established artists to
collaboratively produce an exhibition. The program launched with a symposium titled The Day
of The Young Artist where established professionals gave presentations and talks on “how to
be an artist”.
At no point in the course of the symposium was the financial and day to day reality of the life
of an artist discussed.
The work I made for the exhibition was a direct response to this.
Replicating the Days of The Young Artist tote bags given at the symposium I replaced “Young
Artist” with professions I know other artists have to earn an income. The primary aim of the
work was to provoke a dialogue surrounding the financial reality of being an artist, a reality
very rarely discussed.
In May 2014 I was invited as a guest speaker to the closing symposium Apprentice Master
Dialogues: Art & crisis: how does the artist survive in todays society?, presenting the work as
a starting point for discussion.
