• Tabs are used to align text on your page.
• You need them…
• because characters are not the same width
• so two lines of 60 characters are not always the same
length
• tabs are the only accurate way to line up text
• right tabs are fun!

Tabs
For visual learners – the Ruler is all you need to set up tabs.
Select the type of tab you want, and simply click on the Ruler
to place the tab stop.
• Right Tab
• Text will flow backwards as you type
• Left Tab
• Traditional move to the left across the page
• Center Tab
•
Centers your text at that point – even if it isn’t the center of the page
Hold down the ALT key for accurate measurements.

• Rather wrap your mind around a list? Use the Tabs
Dialog Box.
• Click the arrow on the lower right of the Paragraph
group.
• Click the Tabs button on the lower left of the
Paragraph dialog box.

Margins on the Ruler
• Patiently hover your pointer at the edge of the grey
and white area of your ruler.
• When you see the double-sided arrow
appear, press your left mouse button and drag that
margin.

Page Breaks
• Page breaks will happen naturally when you have
enough text to fill a page and flow onto the next page.
• If you want to force a move onto the next page, don’t
just keep hitting enter. Insert a “Page Break”.
• The keyboard short cut for this is Ctrl-Enter.

• Drag the symbols from their location on the ruler,
or select them from the tab selector and drop them
on the ruler.

Creating Lists with Bullets or
Numbers
• This can be done before you have typed your text,
or after you already have typed a plain list.
• If you are working with an already-typed list, just
highlight the list and select the type of bullet you
want to use.

Tables
• Tables provide a framework to organize your
information in columns and rows.
• Tables aren’t just for numbers. They can be used
for words or even pictures.
• Tables are flexible. You can easily add rows, change
the width of the columns, and even make the
borders between the “cells” invisible.

• Click the Insert Tab and click Table
•Quick select a table using the
grid shown. Just point at the
size table you want and click.
•Or click Insert Table for a
dialog box where you can enter
the number of columns and
rows you need.

• Use the Tab key or the arrows to move from one
“cell” to another. Hitting Tab in the last cell of the
table will add another row.
• Regular formatting rules apply inside tables; select
text and you can change the font, size, or
justification within the cell.
• Click this arrow symbol in the upper left corner of
the table to select the entire table:

Labels
• Labels are tables with invisible borders.
• Microsoft & label manufacturers work together to
make labels easy.
• Click the Mailings tab.
• Click the Labels icon on the far left.

•Click Labels to open a
dialog box.
•This is where you select
the size of your labels.
Use your manufacturer’s
item number, or grab a
ruler.

For a full page of the same
label:
•Type right into Address box.
•A right mouse button click
will allow you to change the
font.
•Send directly to the printer,
or click New Document for
additional editing.
For a page full of different labels:
•Leave the Address box blank
•Click New Document.
•You’ll get a precisely measured table that you can complete.

Envelopes
• Click the Mailings tab
• Click the Envelope icon on the far left
•Type right into the boxes provided.
•A right mouse button click will allow
you to change the font.
•Send directly to the printer, or add it
as a final page of your document.
