Easy Read - Equality and Human Rights Commission

Strategic Plan 2016 to 2019
The main things we will work on
from 2016 to 2019
Who we are
We are called the
Equality and Human Rights Commission.
We work in England, Scotland and Wales.
We work to make sure everyone
is treated fairly and gets their human rights.
Human rights are rights that everyone has.
Like the right to be treated fairly,
get an education or have a family.
2
What is this plan about?
This plan is about the main things we will
work on from 2016 to 2019.
We looked at the work that is most important
to do and can help really change things.
We looked at some things first like:
 what is happening in England, Scotland
and Wales
 what we found out in our report called
Is Britain Fairer? and our other work
 what other people want us to work on.
3
The main things we will
work on from 2016 to 2019
1. Helping really change things
Help from the law
We will work to make sure:
 people can get good advice and help
from the law if they are treated badly
 everyone is treated fairly by the police,
courts and prisons.
Having a say
We will work to make sure everyone can:
 have a say in what happens
in their local area and country
 be private and free to say what they want.
4
Education
We will work to make education fairer
for everyone.
At the moment some children are not doing
as well at school as others.
Like disabled children and children from
poorer families.
And some children are bullied more than
others.
Having a job
We will work to make sure everyone
has a chance to get a job and do well.
Some people can find it harder than others
to get a job, get paid well or to be managers.
For example women, young people
and disabled people.
5
Health and support
We will work to make sure everyone:
 gets the healthcare and other care
they need
 is treated fairly when they get this care.
Some groups of people do not always get
the healthcare they need like:
 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
people
 disabled people
 people with mental health conditions.
People being bullied or hurt
We will work to stop:
 people being bullied or hurt. Some people
can be bullied and hurt more than others
 newspapers and TV saying bad things
about some groups of people.
6
Prisons, hospitals and police cells
We will work to make sure
people are treated well if they are kept in
places like prisons, hospitals and police cells.
Some people can be treated badly there.
For example, they may be locked up
for a long time or staff may hold them down
to stop them moving.
Help to stop people being poor
and to live in the way they want
The Government is spending less money
on things like health, care and benefits.
This can make life harder for some people,
like disabled people.
7
It can also be hard for new people
in the country to settle in and get the support
they need.
Transport can also be hard for some people.
We will work to make these things better.
Making sure the UK does what
it promised
The UK and other countries have agreed
to make sure people are treated fairly
and get their rights.
We will:
 keep checking how well the UK
is doing with this
 tell people what needs to change
 help other people take part in this work.
8
2. Being the best at what we do
We check how the work is going
to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
We will work to make sure:
 we are experts in what we do
 we give people very good information
to help them know what needs to change
 we make our information even better
 we check how well we are doing.
We are looking at why some people
treat other people badly.
9
This will help us find better ways to stop
bad things happening.
3. Making sure people
know their rights and can get help
if they are treated badly
We will check how the laws about
treating everyone fairly are working.
We will help people know about their rights.
We will help companies and other groups:
 know what the law says they must do
 do more to make sure everyone
is treated fairly.
We will help people go to court if we think
it will really help change things.
10
We will work with the Governments
of the UK, Scotland and Wales to:
 give them advice on what to do
 make sure new laws and changes to laws
are right and work well for everyone
We will help people know why human rights
are important.
We will work with lots of other groups
in the UK and other countries to get our
work done.
11
4. Doing our work in the best way
We made a plan about how to do our work
in the best way.
We will work to make sure:
 our staff feel good about working for us
 we have the right skills and are working
with the right people
 we do good work that helps really change
things.
We will make our website better.
We will:
 check how this plan is going
 make a new plan in 2019 about our work
from 2019 to 2022.
