Oakland County 4-H Connections February, 2016 Dear 4-H Friends, To those of you who have been part of the 4-H family for a long time, it is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Tom Schneider. Tom passed away last night, while traveling in Laos from a sudden heart attack. Tom was there on his annual trip to educate the teachers on current academic techniques. Those who worked with him knew his passion for education and those who learned from him will forever be transformed by his knowledge. Tom had been with MSU Extension for 39 years, most of which was spent in Oakland County. Please keep his wife, Brenda and his daughter, Jennifer in your thoughts. More information about memorial services will be provided as details become available. Tom’s wife Brenda and daughter Jennifer have created an endowment fund at the Michigan 4-H Foundation in Tom’s memory. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made there. Below is the information you will need. Gifts in celebration of Tom’s life can be made payable to the Michigan 4-H Foundation for The Thomas F. Schneider Memorial Endowment Fund and mailed to: Michigan 4-H Foundation 535 Chestnut Rd., Room 240 East Lansing, MI 48824 or made online at www.mi4hfdtn.org/givenow.html Thank you and please keep Tom and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time. In case you didn’t know, Exploration Days is a 3 day pre-college readiness camp on campus where youth live in the dorms, eat in the cafeterias, and navigate campus and the 4-H bus system to get to their mini classes (that they selected!) on time. There are also extracurricular activities like ice skating, swimming, playing sports at the rec centers, and the Exploration Days Dance! Last year, the Oakland County Delegation included 99 people! We were the second largest delegation in the state behind Monroe County, and we would like to be the largest! The cost this year in Oakland County will remain the same at $185 / participant. The registration book will again be posted online at http://tiny.cc/OC2016YED on February 19th. Please make sure you use the Oakland County form as it has a few extra options. If you would like a hard copy of the book, instead of viewing it online, you’ll have to wait until March 8th as we have to pick them up from Campus on the March 7 th. We take registration on a first come – first serve basis, so you should bring or mail your COMPLETED form and deposit of $90 to the office ASAP! The remaining balance will be due when you attend the mandatory meeting in May. Our office will no longer be accepting forms missing signatures. We will help check over forms when you come to the office. If you are not already enrolled in 4hOnline, you will need to do so. You will also need to pay the $10 annual 4-H Participation fee if you haven’t done so already. The last day to turn in your registration is April 28th. Participants and their parents will need to attend one of our Pre-Exploration Days Participant Meetings. These meetings are MANDATORY, even if you’ve been to Exploration Days before. You can choose from the dates below. Wednesday, May 25 - 6:30 – 8:30 – Oakland County Fair Grounds (Springfield Oaks) Thursday, May 26 3:00 – 5:00 – Executive Office Building – Pontiac Thursday May 26 6:30 – 8:30 – Executive Office Building – Pontiac Want to Chaperone? We need one same-gendered Chaperone per 10 youth participants. If you are interested in Chaperoning, please contact Mary Blumka at [email protected] as soon as possible so I know how many folks we need to recruit. We have a CCA for the boys (head chaperone) we are looking for a CCA for the girls. Chaperones will be asked to attend two additional meetings before the event on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 & Tuesday, June 14th from 6:30-8:30. Options for getting to Exploration Days Most participants find their own transportation, but we do have other options. Oakland County 4-H offers a bike trip that starts here in Pontiac and rides to campus over 2 days ($25). This year we’ll be adding a new option. An Oakland County Parks & Recreation will be picking up participants in Pontiac and Southfield. Price per participant has yet to be determined. There will be limited space on the bus and participants can select that option on a first come / first serve basis.
