It is called The Perks of Being a Walllower and it is about the emotional ups and downs of an introverted teenager called Charlie. I am going to structure my presentation as follows: First, I will give you some general information about the ilm. Then, I will outline1 the plot. After that, I will explain why I enjoyed it. Lastly, I will end with a short conclusion. b So let me begin with some general information. It is a coming-of-age ilm based on a bestselling novel published by the US-American writer Stephen Chbosky. The author was also the scriptwriter and the director of the ilm, which was released in 2013. The cast stars Emma Watson as Sam, Ezra Miller as Patrick and Logan Lermen as Charlie. Chbosky was awarded the 2013 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. The category “First Feature” is meant for directors’ irst ilms. The ilm also won the 2013 People’s Choice Award for Best Dramatic Movie. T H C c Now I would like to get to the ilm’s plot. It is set in the USA in the present, mainly in Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. I S N The ilm begins when Charlie, a shy, quiet teenager, starts high school. He does not have friends at school and is not close to anyone in his family either. So he writes long letters about his experiences and feelings to someone the viewer does not know. Charlie happens to meet two high school seniors: Patrick and his pretty half-sister Sam. Their clique soon accepts him and he takes part in their social activities, which include also experimenting with alcohol and drugs. Charlie takes a special role in the group of friends: On the one hand, he is the outsider, but on the other hand he is able to understand emotional things that the others do not see. This brings him closer to Patrick and Sam. As his friendship with Sam develops deeper emotionally, his subconscious2 personal issues emerge: He remembers that he was sexually abused by his aunt when he was a child. He is inally able to overcome these issues with the help of a therapist. A R O V e All in all, The Perks of Being a Walllower is absolutely worth seeing. It is a heart-warming, occasionally funny, sometimes sad insight3 into American teenage life. Especially Logan Lerman as Charlie is truly touching and quickly wins the viewers’ hearts. In addition, the typical high school situations remind old and young people of similar experiences of their own. I also enjoyed the ilm’s message. It is about the value of friendship and shows that we can only come to a better understanding of ourselves by interacting with others.
