Application packet for HISTORIC DISTRICT SIGN (HDS) SOURCES OF AUTHORITY The source of authority for a Historic District Sign Application is: Maui County Code, Section 19.52.030, as amended. A fillable and savable PDF version of this application may be downloaded from the County of Maui's website. II. PURPOSE The Historic District Sign Application (HDS) is intended to preserve the integrity of county historic districts no. 1 and no. 2 (Lahaina) by ensuring that signs are compatible with each building’s architectural style. Please complete this application if you are proposing new signs or revisions to existing signs in county historic districts no. 1 and no. 2. III. Sample Photographs Showing Sign Placement (p. 7) IV. PROCESSING PROCEDURES 1. Applicant submits application to the County of Maui, Department of Planning (Department). 2. If the application is complete the Department reviews the application for consistency with the Maui County Code and the Lahaina Historic Districts Design Guidelines, Sign Guidelines document. 3. If necessary, plans for proposed sign(s) may be referred to the Cultural Resources Commission for consultation. 4. Pursuant to Section 19.52.030, Maui County Code, a sign that is parallel (to the building wall) is limited to twelve (12) square feet and a sign that is perpendicular (to the building wall) is limited to eight (8) square feet. If a proposed sign exceeds the allowable sign area, a variance from the Board of Variances and Appeals will be required. Variances shall be heard pursuant to Chapter 19.520, Maui County Code. 5. The Department acts upon the application. 6. For all business identification signs except awning, sunshade, and window signs, a tag is issued to indicate that it has been approved. The tag is numbered and corresponds to the specific design and location approved when the sign was reviewed. 1 HISTORIC DISTRICT SIGN APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please submit one (1) copy of each of the following application requirements.
