New Issues and Varieties
by Andrew Dolphin
2015 Christmas (4 November 2015)
New Zealand Post have done it again! This is a really lovely set of Christmas stamps, certainly
amongst the best NZ Christmas issues ever. To quote from NZ Post’s Collector’s Notes: New
Zealand is home to some truly beautiful stained-glass windows, which add character and charm
to churches and buildings throughout the country. The Christmas 2015 stamp issue features five
vibrant stained-glass windows, ranging in design from the traditional to the contemporary.
Traditional colouring of glass with transparent colours is well over a thousand years old. Stainedglass windows are an intricate art-form that requires almost as much in mathematical skills as it
does in artistic talent. Four of the stained-glass windows selected are of Christian theme, with one
being more secular. The colours chosen are blues, greens and reds for four of the stamps, with one
value, the $1.40, being quite different with white and cream shades.
Designs: 80c: from St Marks Church, Carterton; an angel from part of the Kelvin and Janice Loveday
commemorative stained-glass window.
$1.40: from St Aidans Anglican Church, Remuera, Auckland; a dove which forms part of a larger
stained-glass window. (My personal favourite: a lovely stamp)
$2.00: from St Marys-in-Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland; one of many stained-glass windows
in the Cathedral, depicting Mary with the baby Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem.
$2.50: from the Christchurch Womens Hospital Nurses Memorial Chapel; a stylized native
Pohutukawa or New Zealand Christmas Tree, part of a larger stained-glass window, which appears on
the self-adhesive FDC envelope. Incidentally this is the second occasion in 2015 that this Chapel’s
stained-glass windows have appeared on a stamp: the first one being the 80c Marquette Memorial
Window from March’s World War I New Zealand’s Story II 1915 The Spirit of Anzac set.
$3.00: from St Benedicts Church, Newton, Auckland; the Three Wise Men, Kings of the East offering
their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (the latter two gifts of aromatic gum-resin burnt as incense
or used in perfumes and medicines, etc, being by far the most valuable of the three, the precious
yellow gold metal not quite being regarded then with the same prestige as today).
In addition to these five gummed stamps there are seven self-adhesive stamps, as follows:
- 80c coil stamp from a retail-roll of 100
- three booklet stamps: 80c from $8.00 booklet, $2.00 from $20.00 booklet (sold for $18.00),
$2.50 from $25.00 booklet (sold for $22.50). The $2.00 and $2.50 self-adhesive stamps
include a tiny International Par Avion airmail-label as part of their design “ to help identify them for
international use.”
- a jumbo-roll strip of three self-adhesives as used for FDC production.
Technical details as below.
2
The surprise with this issue is a Christmas miniature sheet. This is only the second Christmas
miniature sheet NZ Post have released, the first one being many years ago in 1994 (there was also a
limited edition 1995 Christmas miniature sheet issued as part of an album in 1996.)
And this 2015 Christmas miniature sheet is really something rather special. It is printed on
completely different paper to the normal sheet stamps, on translucent Gilclear 113gsm non-phosphor
paper. To put it plainly this produces ‘see-through’ stamps perfectly encapsulating the stained-glass
window theme. Above each stamp is an arched church window and the miniature sheet is diecut in
the shape of these five stained-glass church windows. This effect is particularly noticeable on the
miniature sheet FDC where printed on the cover, and thus showing through the stamp windows, are
bright red pohutukawa flowers on the first four stamps and blue sky on the fifth. This is most effective
and produces an FDC the miniature sheet upon which, at first sight, is quite different to the mint one
– it is not, they are identical, it is simply the FDC design showing through the translucent paper, as
indeed it was designed to do.
All in all, a winner!
(We did hear a whisper that Southern Colour Print had had some teething problems in the printing
and/or diecutting of this miniature sheet but if this was indeed the case then none whatsoever have
been reported with any printing or diecutting problems. So, well done SCP.)
Designed by Hannah Stancliffe-White, NZ Post, Wellington and printed by Southern Colour Print Ltd,
Dunedin by offset lithography in the four process colours plus synseal overgloss, perf 14. Five
gummed stamps in sheets of 25 on Tullis Russell 104gsm red-phosphor stamp paper and a five
stamp miniature sheet on translucent Gilclear 113gsm non-phosphor paper.
Three diecut perf 9½x10 self-adhesive stamps:
80c roll of 100, matrix stripped, VM and jumbo-roll strip of three values, matrix intact, HM, with redphosphor tagged panel at bottom, on Avery Dennison 210gsm B90 Kraft Back WLK6 self-adhesive
stamp paper;
three values booklet stamps, booklet matrix intact on Tullis Russell 210gsm red-phosphor selfadhesive booklet stamp paper.

1935 Pictorials Inverted Watermarks
Last month I asked, “What else can CP Newsletter readers show me?” and once again
the redoubtable John Geary of Dunedin has come up trumps!
This time it is two copies of the 6d Harvesting both with watermark inverted W.8c: The
first, the final issue on coarse paper perf 14½x14 L9e(z), with postmark dated Sept
1945. This is a scarce stamp certainly currently undercatalogued and scheduled for a
Cat. increase in 2016. (And, yes, Section L 1935 Pictorials will be revised in the 2016
CP Catalogue supplement).
The second 6d Harvesting inverted watermark is the first Official overprint perf 13½x14
LO9b(z), with postmark dated May 1940. This currently is asterisked * in CP indicating
that the stamp is so rare that no price can be quoted. Well, one will be going in in 2016.

New Zealand Stamps by Campbell Paterson
Last month I spoke of the 2/- Captain Cook’s attractions as a stamp of unequalled
philatelic interest – not only did it appear in seven different combinations of watermark
and perforation but every individual stamp of the first plate exhibits features that allow
the whole plate to be reconstructed – providing that one has a large enough stock of used
stamps to work on! The basic feature of Plate 1 is that every stamp, except R1/12, has
the ship’s rigging retouched in the form of extra “rungs” of the “ladder” added – the area
of interest being the rigging lines immediately beside the head of the soldier on the left.
The reason for this mammoth task of retouching lay in a peculiarity of the roller die which
4
was used to lay down the plate. The peculiarity was a weakness or absence of rigging
lines in the area described above. We know that this was the case as the weakness can
be seen in die proofs (showing that the fault was in the master die – not only in the roller
die); also we see the same weakness showing in both the later plates 2 and 3.
But we are at present concentrating on Plate 1. Here we find as stated, that every stamp
on the plate was retouched in the rigging at least. One other possible exception is R10/5
which does not show the typical Plate 1 rigging retouching. This stamp, however, does
show signs of re-entering from the earliest printings and this may be the reason for its
being different from its fellows. We see the same result in later printings (of which I will
write in due course) where, following the development of plate cracking in the bottom two
rows, several stamps in those rows were re-entered. These later re-entry stamps, though
normal “Plate 1” types, before the re-entering, now became (like R10/5) more like the
original die, with weakness in the rigging. This only underlines the use, for the re-entering
of R10/5 first and the others later, of a roller die with weakness in the rigging.
It is not possible in the space I have available to deal with the stamps of Plate 1 in any
exhaustive manner – that must be obvious – but what I can do is to call attention to some
of the more interesting stamps and to their progression through the rather remarkable
series of renovations that were made to this plate.
Take for instance R8/2 and R9/2 adjacent stamps in the lower left corner of the plate.
As our Catalogue shows, R9/2 was normal during the two Single Watermark issues
(L13a and b) and the first issue with Multiple Watermark (L13c) but throughout these
three issues R8/2 showed the “coconuts” flaws – a number of spots of colour like nuts
falling from the palm tree on the right. When we come to L13d (Multiple wmk; perf 13½
x 14) we find the R8/2 still with ‘coconuts’ but R9/2 now shows a dot over the bow of
the row boat. Later in the same issue R9/2 has two dots over the bow. So far so good,
but between this (L13d) issue and the first issue perf. 12½ (L13e) both stamps were
cleverly retouched. On R8/2 the lines of the sky and of the palm tree show clearly that
the “coconuts” have been erased and the damaged area retouched; on R9/2 the site
of the two ‘bow’ dots has been completely redrawn. This means that the hill below and
to the right of Cook’s left hand has been completely redrawn. The hill is, incidentally, the
headland in Poverty Bay known as “Young Nick’s Head” – Cook’s first landfall in New
Zealand. In the retouched R9/2 (as seen on L13e and all later forms of Plate 1) this
headland is crudely drawn and the sky above it equally obviously redrawn.
This is a long subject that I will have to continue later – in the meantime I call attention
this month to the most famous of all the 2/- varieties – the stamp R1/4 with the flaw that
turns “COOK” into “COQK”. This is a good variety and the stamp worth noting for other
reasons as well as the “Q” flaw. Of that more later.

them ‘Full Listing’ status (SG2685-2694). They were designed by Saatchi and Saatchi,
Wellington and printed by Wyatt & Wilson, Christchurch. Here is a listing of our stocks, Mint

So here we have this year’s line up of NZ new issues -- or at least the ones we know about. That is
because this year there are three mystery issues, in May, August and September: “Keep an eye out
for this issue”. We shall just have to wait and see, obviously.
March’s Glowworms stamps sound intriguing. I wonder how NZ Post intend to depict tiny glowworms
(technically actually beetles!) as they emit their greenish-white light from their abdomens. My
experience of glowworm caves has been that of thousands of tiny white star-like lights totally
covering the roof of an otherwise pitch-black cave. Spectacular in real life but it certainly would not
work on the small format of a postage stamp. However, New Zealand Post’s Stamps & Collectables
design-team in Wellington have some clever people working for them, so I am certain they will come
up with some unusual and different stamps. Hey, how about ‘glow-in-the-dark’ glowworm stamps?!
