Mahalo Sumner Erdman for your 20+ years of coaching
Sumner Circa 1982
Ode to Erdman
BY FRED RAWE
former faculty and current Seabury Hall
grandparent ’17, ’19, and ’22
Became a father, Sumner did,
Lovely daughters: Danielle, Camille …
Preserving Erdman Dynasty.
From the slopes of far-flung Ulu
Palakua Place that is,
Came he, Sumner, skinny boy,
Came he to Seabury Hall.
Through all of this, and beyond,
Devotion to a game he made.
Call it soccer, Call it football …
Led him to unending fame.
Came he, son of Pard and Betsy,
For his schooling, math and English,
For maturation, hoped we all.
First he played, defended he,
Sacrificing life and limb.
Then as coach, assisted Fred,
Refined the sport, inside out.
But not before some pranks he pulled,
Fireworks , in school bathroom …
Though never caught , confessed he later.
Then suddenly, oh suddenly,
Grew he up, we all applauded,
Saw him rise to splendid heights.
To Student Body President,
To grandeur hailed far and wide.
Thence to college – Puget Sound.
Thence to manhood, married Angie,
Beauty from South Africa.
COV ER PH OTO :
PH OTO BY
When Fred left, Sumner rose …
Leading Spartans, girls all.
With shaved head and shining sunblock,
Strode he the sidelines, kicking sod.
Exhorting here, Pleading there,
He urged them … urged them,
“Do your best.”
“Defeat, defeat the Enemy !
Form a wall, pass it square !
Kick it low … to far post !
Pull offside the vanquished foe !”
The World Goes Round Musical Revue
Jack Grace
Yet, kind and gentle Sumner was,
To those distraught,
To those who wept,
To those who played, despite the pain.
So … when all is said and done,
We gather here to praise The Man.
To raise our glasses – lemonade !
For glories past and glories future.
Son of Erdman, Spouse of Angie,
Father, too, and Coach Heroic,
Laud we you, from the goalposts,
From the goalposts – hither … yon.
Go now, ye, to Game Alumni …
But careful, careful … Pull not hamstring,
Save your quads and tender knees.
Tape your ankles, Stretch Achilles.
So it is, as it should be,
With fame secure, you enter now,
The Pantheon of Soccer Greats !
BUT … as you must, return your sweats …
Return your cleats and whistle, too.
Perks are past, Sumner Erdman …
Though Glory keep ye, evermore !
Sumner, (above)
as he is honored
at the Alumni Winter
Games, and (below)

s an elite independent school, Seabury Hall strives to lead
the evolution of education, and continues to distinguish itself.
Our strong curriculum is continually enhanced to ensure integration
of 21st century skills in our academic and co-curricular programs.
Through the advanced training of teachers, coaches and advisers,
Seabury Hall nurtures lifelong learning, leadership towards social
change and student-centered global connections. As Seabury Hall’s
admission numbers in the last decade testify, families seek the school
for its many qualities – an abundance of unique programs, its stellar
faculty and staff and a diverse student body.
It is essential that our students are taught the skills necessary for the
future: critical thinking, collaboration, entrepreneurship, adaptability
– these must all be inherent to what we teach. To that end, technology
must be a distinguishing component of education today and into
the future. Seabury Hall will ensure that technology is implemented
effectively and used productively in learning and in campus life. This
is exhibited, in part, through flipped classrooms and project based
learning. Additionally, creative methods of harnessing technology
and evaluating student learning will be developed, including an MIT
Fab Lab, DNA sequencers, Green Sense Farms, and the latest model
3D printers, robotics and other scientific advancements. This allows
teachers to focus on important skills, such as critical thinking and
analysis, while providing students with easily accessible information on
a more flexible timeline.
With technology, the walls of the classroom can be opened, providing the
students with a broader perspective of the world.
It is a great honor and an extraordinary opportunity to serve as the Head
of Seabury Hall and to share my vision for its bright future. Together, we
have the ability to make a tremendous long-term impact on this finest of
educational institutions and on the entire island of Maui.

Hiroki Ichinose was listed as one of the top 25
dancers in Dance Magazine, which printed this,
“Ichinose has the kind of facility that most dancers
dream of. But rather than relying on elegant lines,
he uses his abilities to push past his boundaries,
moving seamlessly through transitions that appear
nearly impossible to even the trained eye. He captivates audiences with his uniquely subtle approach.
It’s this quality that has no doubt led him to his
next dance venture overseas at Nuremberg Ballet.”

The Magnetism of Maunalei… for some it is the stellar beauty of this place
that draws alums back to campus, often bringing their new families for a tour. For others it is the
opportunity to visit their favorite instructors who most inspired them. And then there are those
alumni, for whom the impact of their experience at Seabury Hall was so great, it led them to return
to campus to become members of the faculty. Pictured here are the current alumni faculty on the
teaching staff. Yet this photo does not tell the whole story; the athletics department has also been
blessed with many alumni who return seasonally as coaches, year after year, and some as volunteers.
Their desire to return to Seabury Hall to become a part of the faculty and staff is one of the
greatest compliments an institution can receive.

I WANT TO Support
Deserving Students
Students are the greatest
beneficiaries of gifts to Seabury
Hall’s Annual Fund. Over 35% of
our current students receive
financial aid. A gift to the Annual
Fund helps secure the future of
Seabury Hall.
Cash Gifts
Cash donations are often the most
convenient form of giving. Seabury Hall
appreciates gifts of any amount in the
form of cash, check, money order, credit
cards and online electronic gifts.
Online Gifts
Donations may be made online at
seaburyhall.org/giving.
Stock Gifts
Gifts of stock or appreciated securities
may be made to the school by contacting
the Development Office.
Matching Gifts
Some corporations have a matching gifts
program that enables donors to double
or triple their donations. Please ask your
employer and request a matching gifts
form to initiate the match.
Retiring Board Members
Mahalo to our retiring board members
Father Austin Murray (above left),
Henry Rice (above right) and
Leslie Ann Yokouchi (left) for their decades of
service and dedication to Seabury Hall.
The school extends its deepest thanks to these
members for their support of the school’s
commitment to its mission.
Mahalo for your support, vision and guidance.
Planned Gifts to Leave a Legacy
A planned gift is the ultimate way to ensure
the continuity and permanence of a Seabury
Hall education. Gifts may be made through
a simple bequest, life insurance policies,
retirement plan assets, trusts and other
charitable mechanisms. Individuals who
have advised the school of their planned gift
become members
of the honored
Maunalei Society.
Gifts of Real Estate and
Personal Property
Gifts of real estate and personal property
such as art, collections and tangible or
intellectual property may be another way
you can give to the school.
