Achieving pregnancy with Donor
Sperm
Queensland Fertility Group’s Sperm Donor Program has
helped thousands of women achieve pregnancy; including
women who are single or in a heterosexual or same-sex
relationship. Our program has been operating for over 30
years and meets the highest safety and quality standards.
Our dedicated and experienced donor team provides expert
guidance and support for both donors and recipients
throughout the process
Choosing a Sperm Donor
Depending on the type of relationship between the donor
and recipient, donors are classified as either ‘known’ or
‘anonymous’.
Known donor - the identity of the sperm donor is known
by the recipient(s) and commonly where the donor and
recipient have an existing relationship. A known donor may
be a friend, colleague or family member.
Anonymous donor - the identity of the sperm donor is not
known to any recipient.
Anonymous Donor Sperm
Queensland Fertility Group has a supply of safe and
suitable sperm from anonymous donors in Australia as
well as from overseas sperm banks (predominantly in
the USA) that you may purchase.
We select donors very carefully - they are fit and
healthy, with no specific infectious diseases, or any
identified history of hereditary diseases. They also have
high potential fertility.
If you decide to proceed with treatment, you will
be given access to our password-protected sperm
donor website where you can search for a donor by
nationality, eye colour, hair colour and height. Our
donor profiles also include information about their
occupation, weight, and blood type. You can also view
their baby photos to get a better idea of their physical
characteristics as a child, as per the example below.

Fertility treatments
You and your fertility specialist will determine the most
appropriate treatment plan for you, which may include
the following;
Artificial insemination, or Intrauterine Insemination
(IUI). IUI involves inserting the donor’s prepared sperm
through the neck of the womb (cervix) and into the
uterus, close to the time of ovulation. It is not a painful
or invasive procedure; in fact it’s very much like having
a pap smear.
With In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), the female eggs are
taken from the body and are fertilised with sperm in
our specialist laboratory. The resulting embryo is then
placed back into the woman’s body for conception.
IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be part
of your IVF treatment cycle. The only major difference
with ICSI is how we achieve fertilisation: using very fine
micromanipulation equipment, we inject a single sperm
into each egg.
IVF and ICSI offer you significantly higher pregnancy
success rates compared to IUI.
Counselling sessions
The decision to create a family with the help of a sperm
donor has a significant impact on everyone involved,
including the recipient, the donor and the child who is
born as a result of the donation. Before treatment can
begin, donors, recipients, and any partners are required
to attend mandatory counselling sessions to address
the social and psychological considerations associated
with donor conception. Common points of discussion at
your counselling session may include:
•
Advice on how and when to tell children about their
genetic origins
•
Choosing the ‘right’ donor.
•
Are you prepared? Is your partner just as ready as
you?
Legal considerations
Under current legislation, children born as a result of
donated sperm are considered the children of the birth
mother. Donors have no legal or financial obligation
to the child. However, any children conceived will, at
the age of 18, be entitled to identifying information
including the donor’s full name and date of birth. Our
donor team will consult with both parties before the
exchange of any additional identifying information.
Where to from here?
If you believe you’d like to access donor sperm your
first step is to book an appointment with a QFG Fertility
Specialist. It’s important to choose a Specialist who
‘feels right’ for you. Many of our patients choose their
Specialist based on the recommendation of a friend
or family member, while others visit our website
www.qfg.com.au to learn more about each Specialist.
A number of our Specialists have their own websites,
and we recommend you view these too.
NOTE: You will need to obtain a referral from your GP as
this will allow you to receive a Medicare rebate for your
doctor appointments (provided you are registered with
Medicare). If you’ve had investigations done through
your GP, or with another Specialist, bring any results
you have with you.
