T18-02-05-08.qxd 01.05.2008 15:36 Page 1 QUOTE OF THE DAY “It is not the fact of liberty but the way in which liberty is exercised that ultimately determines whether liberty itself survives.” Dorothy Thompson elementary OSMAN TURHAN READING Mary Read advanced ILLUSTRATIONS Mary Read, one of the most famous female pirates in history, was born in London in 1690. Her father died when she was young and Mary's mother raised her as a boy. Only male children could inherit money so Mary was disguised as a boy so that she would inherit her grandmother's money. When Mary was 13 she joined a ship. She was still dressed as a man. A few years later she joined the British army (as a man) and went to fight the French in Holland. There she fell in love with one of her fellow soldiers-and had to reveal her secret. It was a great surprise to everyone! When her husband died, Mary put on men's clothes again and joined a ship going to the West Indies. But English pirates captured the ship. Two famous pirates, Jack Rackham and Anne Bonney, led the pirate ship. Mary decided to become a member of the pirate crew. She fell in love again, this time with a soldier they had captured, and was married. But their honeymoon was short because soldiers found Mary and her fellow pirates, Jack and Anne, and took them to a prison near Jamaica and the court gave them death sentence. They did not kill her because she was pregnant, but she died in prison in 1720. There are substantiated reports which may indicate the existence of each. What about reincarnation? Deja vu? Many people will swear that they have lived before. ESP? Fortunetelling? Some soothsayers have been able to predict the future with surprising accuracy. How about UFOs? It seems like almost every day of the week, in some part of the world, there are new reports of UFOs, some complete with pictures. Are these all hoaxes? Is it remotely possible that some of them are legit? Let's look at a couple of UFO sightings from earlier this month. 04-04-08 (Arizona, USA) - My friend and I were leaving the Hoover Dam area, and had just crossed into Arizona on Highway 93 toward Kingman. About 20 miles into Arizona, I was adjusting my seat, and as I leaned forward, I felt compelled to look up, and saw about 75 to 100 objects in the clouds. As the clouds passed underneath the objects, they disappeared and then reappeared. They were very large. They were at about the same altitude where jets would fly. This lasted for about 3-5 minutes, and when I had the opportunity to pull the car over and get a better look, they were gone. The friend who was with me estimated that the objects were at least 20,000 to 30,000 feet overhead. 04-04-08 (California, USA) - While sitting in the spa, I usually stare at the sky, and tonight there were winds up to 20 mph under cloudy skies. There was heavy light pollution. While watching a break in the clouds, I saw 2 disc-like objects in formation, one on the right, and the other at the leading object's 7 o'clock position. The objects were heading from north to south towards San Diego International Airport. They were only visible from the reflective orange glow of the city lights which suggests a metalic surface. They were nearly the length of a Boeing 737 from estimation. The objects had no lights of any kind from what I could see. The speed, lack of required wing lights, and close proximity to a major airport suggests that the military was not responsible. These are just two of a multitude of reports from the month of April. Isn't it interesting that UFOs are usually only sighted in the USA? What does that mean? Also, they are always sighted in areas where the weather is hot like Arizona, New Mexico and southern California. Are they looking for a good tan? 7. Jack Rackham and Anne bonney led the pirate ship. _____ 8. Mary met her second husband when she became a pirate on the pirate ship. _____ 9. Mary was sent to prison near Columbia. _____ 10. The court didn't give Mary a death sentence because she was pregnant. _____ ýntermedýate READING Greta and Garbo The two ghosts are resting on their hole-filled hammocks outside the dilapidated mansion. Greta, the older of the two, is a free-spirited 245-year-old with a knack for practical jokes. Garbo usually plays along with Greta until the joke becomes nasty, or sometimes dangerous. It has been a long boring day for the two of them, and Greta is trying to dream up some mischief. "Well, girl, enough of the relaxation. You got any ideas for some fun? I'm ready to boogie," Greta says. "Do we always have to aggravate people? Why can't we just sit back and take our shoes off for a spell?" "What's gotten into you? What happened to the old Garbo I used to know? Come on. Let's float down to the Steven's house. They just moved in, and don't know their new "castle" is haunted." "You can go alone. Find Belly or Toxic to go with you. They seem to enjoy your pranks." "What a party pooper! Belly and Toxic are out of town for a warlock meeting. Get up! I won't hear no as an answer." "All right. I'll come but only for an hour. I've got better things to do later." "No problem. One hour will be enough to frighten the new family out of the house for the next one hundred years!" The two ghosts float over the three blocks to the Steven's house. It is almost 11 p.m., and all is serene inside the house. Greta and Garbo enter through a basement window. "So what is your plan, Greta? Do we scream? Shriek? Howl? Do we make things shake? Shall we let them see only our eyeballs?" "I think screaming will do the trick," Greta says. "There is a mother and father and four children. They all sleep on the second floor. Let's start in the upstairs corridor, and make our way to the bedrooms." Greta and Garbo glide through the air. As they land on the second floor, all of the lights come on. There is a lanky man holding a woman with four children standing next to them. The woman shouts, "Welcome ghosts. We were expecting you. The real estate agency told us this house was haunted before we bought it. That was great news for us as my husband studies the supernatural at the local university. Now, with your help, we will be able to get a first-hand account of how a ghost lives!" It's going to be fun," one of the children shouts. Greta and Garbo are completely shocked. For the first time in her life, Greta is speechless. She grabs Garbo by the neck, and pulls her out of the house. "What's the world coming to!" she cries. "We can't even be normal ghosts anymore."
