Doyouseeapattern?Itmaynotbeimmediatelyclear,butsnowflakes
allhaveasimilar,symmetricalshape.Thefancywaytosaythisisthat
theyallhave“six-foldradialsymmetry.”Symmetryiswhenashapeor
objectlooksthesameafteryouflip,slide,orturnit.Ifyoudrawsix
evenlyspacedlinesoutfromthecenterofasnowflake,youwillnotice

Whydosnowflakeshavethispattern?Andiftheyallhavesuchasimilarpattern,whyisitimpossiblefortwo

Snowisnotsimplyafrozendropofwaterthatfallstotheground.Snowflakesgettheiruniqueshapesby
formingslowly.Theygrowinsideofclouds.Thebirthofasnowflakebeginswithwatervaportravelingthrough
coldair.Whenabitofwatervaporcomesintocontactwithatinyparticleorbitoffloatingdustitcoatsthe
particle.Itthenbeginstocondense,orchangefromagastoasolid.Putanotherway,thewatervaporturnsto
iceandfreezesontotheparticle.Theresultisatinyicecrystal.
Soon,morewatervaporstickstothenewicecrystal.Moreicecrystalsformandjointogethertoformanew,
largericecrystal.Thaticecrystalcontinuestogrowandchangeitsshape,andintimeasnowflakeisborn.
Theshapeofasnowflakereflectstheshapeofthemoleculesthatmakeupwater.Amoleculeisthesmallest
partofanysubstancethatstillhasthepropertiesofthatsubstance.Forexample,amoleculeofwateristhe
smallestbitofwateryoucouldhave.Themoleculesofdifferentsubstanceshavedifferentshapes.Because
watermoleculesaresix-sided,thecrystalsthatmakeupsnowflakesaresix-sided,aswell.
Asicecrystalsformtheydevelop"facets."Afacetisaflatfaceonathree-dimensionalshape.Think,for
example,ofoneofthesurfacesofadiamond.Snowflakefacetsarealwayssix-sided,anditisfacetsthatgive
snowflakestheirsymmetry.Assnowflakesform,theyusuallydeveloparmsthatshootoutfromthecenterina
symmetricalway.Snowflakesalwayshavesixarms,eachofwhichlooksexactlythesameastheothers.
However,theshapeofthesearmsvariesgreatlyfromsnowflaketosnowflake.Assnowflakesgrow,theycan
branchoutindifferentdirections.Thisbranchinghappensbecausewater
vaporwillcondenseonthefirstthingittouches.Ifthereisasmallbumpona
flake’ssurface,thevaporwillcondensethereinsteadoftravelinganyfurther.

Tinychangesintemperatureandintheamountofwaterintheairchangethe
waythatasnowflaketakesshape.Thetemperatureatwhichacrystalformsis
whatdeterminesitsgeneralshape.That'swhyweseelong,needle-like
crystalsat23degreesFahrenheit,andveryflat,plate-likecrystalsat5degrees
Fahrenheit.
Imagineagrowingsnowflakeinacloud.Asthesnowflakeblowsbackandforth,itexperiencesallsortsof
changingconditions.Therearedifferenttemperaturesandmoisturelevelsindifferentpartsofthecloud.The

UnitedStatesdisarmeditsmilitaryforcesandwarmachinery.TheU.S.SenaterefusedtoapprovetheTreaty
ofVersailles,whichwasapeaceagreementbetweenGermanyandtheAlliedPowers(predominatelyGreat

TheSenatealsorejectedmembershipintheLeagueofNations,eventhoughithadbeenpromotedbyformer
PresidentWoodrowWilson.TheLeaguewasaninternationalgroupformedtoresolvedisputesbetween
