Essential Questions:
1. Why did early explorers come to Texas?
2. What patterns and motivations did early explorers have on the exploration and settlement in
Texas?
3. What impact did the early explorers and setters have on Texas?
TEKS/Essence Statements:
4.2) History- The student understands the causes and effects of European exploration and colonization
of Texas and North America. The student is expected:
(A) summarize motivations for European exploration and settlement of Texas, including economic
opportunity, competition, and the desire for expansion;

This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class.
Instruction/Classroom Activities:
Small Group Direct TeachActivity 1Introduce the topic and begin a KWL chart and discuss what the student’s know about Texas
exploration and settlement. Next help the students come up with some ideas about what they want to
know about Texas exploration and settlement.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine what they want to learn about Texas exploration and
settlement.
• Level 2- The student will identify what they want to learn about the Texas settlement.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the KWL chart.
Next show the middle segments of KLRN United Streaming Video Texas Geography, History, and
Culture [Middle segment from 8:40 to 17:00, includes the segments The Settlement of Texas (1:43); The
Independent Republic of Texas (2:18); Texas and the Military (1:36); The Era of Cattle Drives and
Cowboys (1:31); and The Discovery of Oil (1:00) (Total Running Time: 23:36)

a timeline of Texas History, visuals from the video will be provided for the timeline. Finally finish the
KWL chart discussing what they learned from the video.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine one thing they learned about Texas exploration and
settlement.
• Level 2- When given choices, the student will identify one thing they learned about Texas
exploration and settlement
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge pictures from the video segment.

Activity 2Review what was learned from the previous video and complete the 5W’s + H flip book
answering the “wh” questions. When you come to the when section in the flip book, the students may be
confused because the answer will not be in the day or night. So be sure to clarify by asking when as in
the time period (dates)? Then when you come to the where section in the flip book, the students again
may be confused because the answer will not be inside or outside. So be sure to clarify by asking where
as in location (place/continent/country/state/city)? Finally when you come to the why section be sure to
discuss why Texas was explored and settled.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine an answer to the question asked.
• Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will identify the correct answer to the
question asked.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the answer to the question.
Activity 3Review what was learned from the previous videos and create a chart of significant events from
the video PowerPoint. Use a T-chart and divide the events into exploration events or settlement events.
Then talk about why each event occurred, and what the reason was. Finally, draw an arrow from each
event and discuss the effect those events had on our state and society today. Read sections from the Texas
History Alive! Textbook to add additional information to the chart and timeline.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine one fact for the timeline or chart.
• Level 2- When choices are provided, the student will identify one fact for the timeline or
chart.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the chart and timeline.

specific facts for the Texas History timelines.
• Station: Using Microsoft PowerPoint, the student will generate a slide show of
specific Texas History facts.
