New faces at head office
NEWS
A warm welcome to all the new starters who have joined the team at Harlow over the past few months. There have been plenty of additions to
the group across most departments and locations, including several at our Head Office in Long Whatton.
Naushad Lakhani joins the team as HR Manager and is professionally qualified having spent the last ten years in the construction and distribution
sector. Many of you may already have come across Noel Beniston, who is the latest addition to the Head Office sales team. Dewald Swanepoel
has come on-board as the new Operations Manager at Long Whatton, bringing with him extensive experience in managing timber frame, truss
and site operations in the UK and farther afield. Neil Sabey has joined us from Travis Perkins in the newly created capacity of Area Manager,
overseeing our branches throughout the Midlands. Finally, in another newly created position, Harry Hitchcock takes on the role of Marketing
Manager, coming to Harlow from a background in wholesale and retail horticulture.
Harlow move onwards & upwards
We'd also like to pass on our congratulations to Long Whatton Assistant Operations Manager Simon Fox, who tied the knot with his partner
Charlotte on the 18th June.
Branch movers & shakers
As well as the new faces at Long Whatton, there have been plenty of additions,
promotions and internal movements within our branch network:
Burton: Jayne Harris moves from our Nottingham Branch to become Assistant Branch
Manager, Sam Shephard takes on the role of Branch Sales Manager, Richard
Shorthouse has been promoted to Shop/Trade Counter Supervisor, Ben Smith returns
to Harlow as Senior Sales/Tool Champion, Dean Stant joins as Yard Supervisor, Matt
Elveridge joins as Yard/Mill Sales Assistant.
It's been a very busy few months at Harlow, with several key projects underway, internal changes and many new starters at the company.
At the branches, following on from the success of Coalville's new showroom, Derby's redeveloped site is nearing completion with the finishing
touches currently underway. The new showroom is now operational, with just a few final external areas to be completed, during which we hope
to minimise any disruption in day to day operations.
Coalville: Terry Dolman makes the move from Burton to become Assistant Branch
Manger, Cara Allen steps up to become the Shop/Trade Counter Supervisor, Nathan
Maloney has been promoted to Senior Sales/Tool Champion, Kevin Bradley re-joins
the team as Counter Sales Assistant.
We've recently completed a series of Trade Days at our branch network throughout the Midlands (details overleaf). Thanks to all who attended,
we hope you enjoyed the events.
Derby: Matt Charlton is promoted to Branch Manager, Anthony Meffen is promoted to
become the Shop/Trade Counter Supervisor, Paul Booth moves up to become Senior
Sales/Tool Sales Champion, Phil Fedorenko joins the team as Yard Sales Assistant.
We have some major changes currently underway internally, notably the restructuring of our Head Offices at Long Whatton and changes to our
brand image, along with several other projects that we're very excited about and look forward to sharing with you soon.
Leicester: Jamie Simms takes on the Shop Supervisor position, Mark Lockwood has
been promoted to Yard/Mill Supervisor, Kevin Foster moves from Long Whatton
Engineered Flooring to join as a Yard Assistant.
For more information on any of the items contained within this newsletter just contact us on 01509 842561, email us on
[email protected] or visit harlowbros.co.uk.
Long Whatton: Gavin Nicol completed a training day at Makita.
Life-saving action at Burton
Nottingham: Josh Breen steps up to Assistant Branch Manager after completing an
apprenticeship at Long Whatton, Tony Orchard is promoted to Yard/Mill Supervisor,
Steve Smith joins the team as Yard Sales Assistant.
Harlow are proud to share the news that our employee Simon Broughton (Burton Branch), has been awarded a
commendation from the NHS, for his life-saving actions on the 25th April 2016.
On the day in question, a regular customer at our Burton branch suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing after
suffering a heart attack, whilst waiting in our saw mill.
A 999 call was immediately placed to which the Air Ambulance service rapidly responded, but it was Simon's CPR,
lasting for over 15 minutes, which we have been told undoubtedly saved the gentleman's life, and who we are pleased
to report is recovering well following the incident.
“We are indeed very proud of Simon and his life-saving actions that day. It shows the value of having fully trained First
Aiders in every workplace” Chris Whitlock, Harlow Group Managing Director.

Director’s notes
Following the sale of a section of land at our Derby Branch last year, releasing funds for re-investment, we decided to redevelop the branch and
are pleased to announce that the project is nearing completion.
The improved site features a brand new showroom, increased stock holdings, a revised layout and is now overseen by Matt Charlton, our new
Branch Manager, who I know is very excited to get the project completed and have the site back up to 100% operational capacity. Matt has
taken on this role after working as assistant manager within the company, and having been a part of Harlow's Derby branch for over 15 years. I
would also like to welcome all the recent new starters at the company, and thank all existing staff for their hard work making Harlow the
success it is today.
We've also recently completed a series of Trade Days at each of our locations, complete with supplier offers, fundraising for local charities and
special discounts on the day. Thanks to all who attended, we hoped you enjoyed them and look forward to building on the events next year.

Poultry Fair generates enquiries
Men In Sheds
May 10th & 11th saw Harlow Poultry Houses
join over 350 exhibitors at the British Pig &
Poultry Fair, hosted at NAEC Stoneleigh.
A huge thanks to the Second Year
Students at Stephenson College who, as
part of their level two Diploma in
Carpentry and Joinery, constructed a new
display area for the Harlow Garden Range
at our Coalville Branch.
Taking place every two years, the show is a
great opportunity to meet both existing and
new customers and suppliers.
This year proved a huge success, receiving
over 20 new enquiries with a value in excess
of £2,000,000.
Ticking off elements for the students'
Floor covering, Joinery, Hand railing and
Spindle modules, the 16-18 year olds in
the class designed and created the area at
Stephenson College, before erecting it
on-site at Harlow Coalville.
Our design and sales team will now work
tirelessly to turn these enquiries into orders.
The show was a perfect chance to showcase our brand new poultry marketing video, including
snippets of the design, manufacture and build process here at Harlow, alongside interviews with
key customers (a big thanks to Johnathan Martin (Ivy Farms) and James Chandler (Shoby
Poultry) for their participation).
The video was extremely popular and generated some valuable feedback, you can view it for
yourself on the Harlow YouTube channel or social media.

Charity football
Pictured above is Dave Tye working hard on
his latest creation at the AgeUK Men In
Sheds scheme. Harlows have been donating
timber offcuts to the charity which allows
OAP’s to put their joinery skills to the test
in a workshop in Loughborough.
Carpentry and Joinery course tutor Andrew Lawrence was very enthusiastic, noting, 'Real projects
like this are always preferred over simulated ones as they give students on-site practical experience,
a real sense of achievement, benefit the local community and look fantastic on students' CVs”.
Coordinated by Nathan Maloney (Tool Champion, Harlow Coalville), we've donated over £300 worth
of tools and supplies to the College, as a gesture of thanks for involving us with this project.
It was a proud day for Harlow Timber when
our football team, headed up by Noel
Beniston, took to the field to defeat a local
team (Shepshed) 2-1 on the 22nd May at
Thringstone Minors FC ground. Organised
as part of a series of events in aid of
Asthma UK, an impressive total of £722.00
was raised for the charity.

Harlow in film
Over the past few months we've been busy
putting together a selection of videos to
give an overview of each of the Harlow
Brands.
We're pleased to announce that we now
have three films completed; Timber,
Poultry Houses and Stables & Shelters.
These films showcase the products and
service offered by each area of the business,
as well as giving a bit of history, a few
customer testimonials and an insight into
what Harlow are all about.
Timber can be used in very different ways and on such a wide range of projects, as Mark, one of
our Nottingham Branch's long standing customers, has shown with his latest endeavour.
It's been all change in our Head Office over at Long Whatton! Due to several new starters and
general company growth we're installing new external offices, creating open-plan work spaces,
investing in new IT systems, adding a brand new canteen and refurnishing the offices in general.
Bolt Building Supplies in Essex, the latest
company to join the Harlow Group, has
recently completed the redevelopment of
their website; boltbuildingsupplies.co.uk.
The new site is full of technical
information, new product information and
a bit of Bolt's history, as well as the
occasional special offer or trade bargain.
Greenest building in Suffolk!
You can find these videos through our
website, YouTube channel or other social
medias. Let us know what you think!
Trade days are a big success
The first two weeks of September saw a series of Trade Days take place at several Harlow Timber branches throughout the Midlands. They were
the first event of the sort that have been held at Harlow and included supplier stands, demonstrations and special offers, raffles, competitions,
promotions, giveaways and even the occasional burger and bacon roll. Suppliers who supported the events included Richard Burbidge, Samac
Fixings, JB Kind, Velux, International Decorative Surfaces, Makita, Harlow Timber Systems and more. Thanks to everyone who attended the
events, we hope you enjoyed them! We're hoping to repeat the events next year on a larger scale, and look forward to seeing you there!
During 2005 John and Jeanie Kemp took delivery of their first of several Harlow buildings, this particular one being a 50' x 34' Stall for use as a
winery.
In 2013 when the Government changed the regulations, enabling redundant agricultural buildings to be converted to dwellings with relatively little
in the way of planning restraint, John wrote to his Local Authority to inform them of his intention. He then employed the services of an architect
that pledged to deliver a zero carbon conversion and a bespoke specification too… both objectives were achieved.
The result is a three bedroom ground floor with a large living area, a mezzanine floor utilised as an office, and a fourth bedroom coupled with
plentiful under eaves storage. For heating and hot water there's a compact 15kw wood pellet burner and several 4kw of solar panels.
In addition to this, rainwater is collected which flushes the toilets and provides soft water for the washing machine. Also around a foot thick of
sheep's wool is used to insulate the walls with an additional 200ml of Ecotherm insulation in the roof and floor.
The Topping Out ceremony came earlier this year in fabulous style as John and Jeanie's home was awarded the title of “Greenest Building in Suffolk”
by Suffolk County Council.
Harlow Commercial Manager Nick Moon said: “It's great to be involved, share and celebrate this journey, to have provided John and Jeanie with the
platform for their beautiful home is rewarding. The level of specification and performance that they've decided upon reflects their uncompromising
determination. A worthy Green Oscar winner and we'll shortly be delivering some preservative to keep the building fabric looking as good as new for
many years to come”
