DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF SACRAMENTO COUNTY CENTRAL COMMITTEE RESOLUTION 5/12/2017 – Curtis Hall, Sacramento RESOLUTION 2017-15 Recognizing International Worker’s Day WHEREAS, May 1st is International Worker’s Day, which celebrates the contributions of the working people of the world, and is recognized around the world; WHEREAS, May 1st is recognized and promoted by the international labor movement; WHEREAS, May 1st was chosen to be celebrated as International Worker’s Day in remembrance the Haymarket Affair, where workers gathered to demonstrate in support of an eight-hour work day and where those workers were fired upon by law enforcement, resulting in the deaths of eleven citizens in two incidents in Chicago and Milwaukee; WHEREAS, The labor movement, throughout history has put life and limb on the line to secure worker’s rights and protections; WHEREAS, California workers owe a great deal of gratitude to the early efforts of Labor Unions in America, and the workers who were maimed or lost their lives fighting for fair labor practices; WHEREAS, On May 1st of 2006, the Great American Boycott, a general strike originating from undocumented workers and their supporters was held to protest discriminatory federal immigration reform legislation; WHEREAS, On May 1st of 2008, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union held a strike to protest the continuation of the Iraq War and the diversion of resources from domestic needs, refusing to move goods from any West Coast ports; WHEREAS, On May 1st of 2010, worker’s marches were held in New York, San Francisco, Boston, Albany, Chicago, and Los Angeles, to unite immigrant and native workers, and protest against legislation in the Arizona State Senate which discriminated against undocumented immigrants. Whereas on May 1st, 2012, members of Occupy Wall Street and Labor Unions held protests together in a number of cities in the United States and Canada to protest socioeconomic inequality; WHEREAS, President Donald Trump is seeking to forward, and is actively promoting similar discriminatory policies that are separating undocumented family members from their documented relatives, in some cases, separating parents from children who cannot care for themselves; WHEREAS, President Donald Trump is breaking promises made to undocumented immigrants through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) programs; and WHEREAS, Undocumented immigrants are living in constant fear of being forcibly removed from their homes and detained before being sent back to a country wherein they have not resided, for many cases for over a decade; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Democratic Party of Sacramento County recognizes May 1st as International Worker’s Day as a day to celebrate the efforts of workers and their unions, protect all workers from discrimination, and protest against attacks on fellow workers. ### Sponsor(s): Kevin McCarty
