There were many trees in the New England colonies, so lumber was a
big part of everyday life.
The colonists used the lumber for boats and other wooden goods.
The New England colonies used fish for trading and their own personal
uses.
There were thick forests that provided animals for hunting.
There was rocky soil, so farming wasn’t a common trade.
To make up for the lack of farming, the colonists traded to get the goods
they needed.
Government
New England had a charter government which creates laws for all citizens to
follow. All colonies followed this type of government.
Almost all citizens
were granted with a
great amount of
freedom.
Culture and Society
The Puritan culture in the New England
colonies of the seventeenth century was
distinctive in its attitudes to the arts and
recreation. The Puritans were well educated
and literate for their time. The New England
colonies were founded for religious freedom,
so religion was a huge part of everyday life.
