The Fernlea Shop
The Fernlea Shop of Opportunities in Emerald is already exceeding our
expectations. Although the coffee and cakes are a bit slow, it seems that
people still do not know that we do them and some have been put off by
one bad experience while we are learning. I hope they will give us another
go at some stage. Otherwise we are doing well and actually making money.
The donations to the shop have been wonderful, and it is just about time
to try and promote and advertise it further—eg to the “day op shoppers”
and beyond, and also go further with all the other RE’s we envisaged when
we set it up.
RE—JUVENATE—Taking items and fixing them up for sale (eg run down
coffee tables, painting old glasses, putting gardens into cups etc)
RE– PURPOSE -Taking items and making them into something different
(eg old records heated into bowls, old jewellery into chandeliers)
RE– GENERATE -Taking bits and pieces and putting them together to

coming soon. (sales of goods on commission too)
The Fernlea Shop will also soon have a range of greeting cards, and other
handmade items donated for sale so proceeds can go tot Fernlea House.
We will also be hosting another death café, to be held at the shop. Ask all
the questions you wanted to and talk to people about what happens at end
of life. Put forward your views on what you think feel and wonder about
this very special time in peoples lives. Fernlea House encourages a holistic approach to death and dying, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to nurture conversations about living and dying.
“Only by talking about our fears can we truly embrace life in its entirety”
Our service in Pakenham on Fridays is now fully booked with 10 people, so
we are be looking how we can expand down there without any extra funding at present. Obviously the need is there. Any ideas please give me a
call…. Would love to discuss them.
Anyone interested in being on the fundraising sub committee, or part of a
small group to take on one fundraising activity is also most welcome to call
me and put forward your interest. Eg. If someone would like to get together a karaoke night, or a night in with the girls/boys, or a paper plane
flying competition or anything else interesting, please call.
Thank You—looking forward to hearing from you.

ACTIVITIES for MARCH —by Erica.
Greetings! It’s hard to believe summer is over. March
heralds the beautiful season of Autumn which is
probably to most loved time of the year for many
people.
Here at Fernlea House we’ve weathered what we hope
is another safe summer enjoying various activities including picnics at Emerald Park Lake.
During March we look forward to Moomba, looking at
our collections, St Patrick’s day and celebrating our
pets and other best friends.
Please keep in mind that Monday 9th of March is Labour
Day and a public holiday so Fernlea will be closed.

Resistance training reverses
aging and prevents dementia
The amount of muscular mass decreases
about 40 % by the age of 70 and a significant
decrease can be seen after 50 years of age.
Inactivity causes rapid changes in muscular
strength, 3-5% decrease per day in the first
week for those patients who are in bedrest.
Back to school fun
Safe 10-12 weeks senior strength training programs suit very well, for example ,into transitional care package.
After the regular exercising period you can
expect increased muscle strength for daily activities, benefits for incontinence and mental
health.
Other benefits include;
Improvement in the quality of life via increased mobility, physical activity and mental
health.
The prevention and reduction of the number
of falls.
Cost benefits via the hoists and incontinence
reduction.
