Year 9 Health Unit TERM 1 Name: _____________________________________ Teacher: ___________________ Puberty Achievement Objective A.1 Worksheet / Activity Changes at Puberty Male and female reproduction Hygiene poster Level 4 Level 5 Hauora? Hauora is another way of discussing your total well-being. When one area is affected by a change or an activity, the other 3 are also affected. Think of Hauora as being like a house. When all four areas of Hauora are strong, your total well-being is strong. We can relate this to all four walls of the whare being strong so the roof is stable. When one area of Hauora is weakened, it affects the other areas of your Hauora This can relate to one wall of your whare being taken away to be changed. The other three walls are weakened or changed which makes it harder to support and hold the roof up. How can your Hauora become influenced by Puberty?? Physically: Your body organs, skin, bone and muscle development etc. Spiritually: How do you value yourself? You’re surroundings? You’re learning of puberty? Socially: How you interact with others Mentally / Emotionally: How you are feeling and how your hormones are reacting to things going on. Changes of Puberty Puberty is a time where there are many changes that occur in the body. These are triggered by hormones. When puberty is complete, a male and female are physically able to create a baby. Puberty is a time when people can have many different feelings about their sexuality and to whom they are attracted too; because of this it is important not to rush into any decisions about your sexuality. Activity 1. In groups of 3-4, brainstorm the different ways puberty may affect the physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of Hauora. Taha Wairua (Spiritual well being) Taha Tinana (Physical Well being) Taha Whanau (Social Well being) Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional Well being) 2. All of the previous answers Male Reproductive System The male reproductive system is designed to produce sperm cells. So a new life begins (i.e. a baby starts to form) when a male sperm cell fertilises an egg released by a female. Activity 1. Label the different parts of the male reproductive system in the following diagram using the list of terms provided. Penis Sperm Duct List of Terms Prostate Seminal Vesicle Testicle ___________________ _______________ Collects and stores urine Used to store sperm ____________________ Produces semen which keeps sperm alive Carries sperm from the testicles to the penis ___________________ ______________________ Becomes erect when sexually aroused. Releases semen in a process called ejaculation Male sex glands which produces sperm 2. Using the diagram above, draw the path of a sperm cell from the time it is made to the time it is released from the male reproductive system. 3. Place the following actions in correct order to describe the path a sperm cell takes as it fertilises a female egg to produce a baby. A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. Blood fills the penis and it becomes erect Semen is released out of the penis into the vagina Sexual thoughts send message to penis Sperm travels through the uterus The egg becomes fertilised and forms a baby Sperm attaches to ovum in fallopian tubes Fluid is added to the sperm by the seminal vesicle and the prostate gland Sperm is produced in the testicles. Order of actions Letter 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th The Male Reproductive System Using the words below, fill in the blanks below to make this explanation of the male reproductive system correct. Each is only used once. Cowper’s glands epididymis erection nocturnal emissions orgasm penis prostate scrotum semen seminal vesicle sperm testes urine urethra vas deferens First, _______________________ are produced in the small seminiferous tubes of the ________________. These oval shaped glands are protected by a sac called the _____________________. After the sperm cells are produced, they are stored in a large coiled tube on the outer surface of each testicle called the ___________________________. From this tube the sperm go into a larger tube called the ___________________ ________________________, which eventually carries them to the external male reproductive organ, the ___________________. Along the way sperm is nourished by a sugary fluid from the _____________________ _____________________, chemical fluid from the ________________________ which is the most common site for cancer in men, and fluid from the _____________________ ____________________ which are two small glands, located near the bladder. These fluids plus the sperm cells combine to form ________________________. This is the fluid ejaculated from the penis during _____________________________. Before a male can ejaculate, the spongy tissue in the penis becomes filled with blood, causing it to become stiff and hard. This is known as an ___________________________. The tube that carries the semen from the body is the ______________________. This tube also carries _______________________ from the bladder. Males can also have uncontrolled ejaculation during sleep which are ________________________ _____________________ (wet dreams). called Female Reproductive System The female reproductive system is designed to produce an egg which when combined with a male’s sperm cell, produces a baby Activity 1. Label the different parts of the female reproductive system in the following diagram using the list of terms provided. List of Terms Uterus Cervix Fallopian Tubes Ovary Vagina _____________________ _______________ ___________________ Holds about 250,000 eggs. At puberty they start being released once per month. An egg (ovum) travels through one of these tubes to get to the uterus after ovulation ___________________ _______________________ Lining grows during the menstrual cycle to nourish a growing foetus in case conception occurs. Can open wide to allow a baby to exit the uterus or close tight which a foetus is growing _________________________________ Connects the cervix to the outside of the body. Secretes fluid to keep itself clean. 2. Match the following parts of the female reproductive system with their correct functions Parts of the female reproductive system Functions 1. Cervix Growing a lining that helps to nourish a growing foetus 2. Uterus Widens to allow a baby to leave the uterus 3. Fallopian Tubes Connects to the cervix 4. Ovary Egg travels down these to get to the uterus 5. Vagina Produces eggs which are released once per month Female Reproductive system Using the words below, fill in the blanks below to make this explanation of the female reproductive system correct. Each is only used once. cervix clitoris egg cells estrogen fallopian tubes hymen labia menstruation ovaries ovulation ovum progesterone puberty sperm cell uterus vagina First, _______________ __________________ are produced in two almond shaped organs known as the _____________________. During the process of _______________________, a mature egg (____________) is released enters one of two ____________________ _________________. For a few days the egg travels toward the pear shaped ___________________. The lining of this thickens in preparation for a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized by the male _________________ _______________, it will leave the body together with the lining of the uterus and a small amount of blood. This is called _________________________. The lower portion of the uterus is called the ____________________ and is a common site of cancer in women. The female sex organ is the _______________. A circular fold of skin is usually present at the entrance to this called the __________________. Outside of the vagina are folds of skin covered in pubic hair known as the ______________________. Between these folds is a small round sensitive area of skin called the ____________________. The development of the reproductive system is triggered by the hormones ____________________ and ____________________, which cause many physical changes in a girl. This period of change is called ___________________. Did you know? Girls are born with all eggs they need. About 1 million all together An egg is the size of a full stop. Sperm are about 0.05mm long. One million sperm can fit into the head of a pin Ejaculated semen contains about 300 million sperm in 5ml of fluid (1 tea spoon) Sperm have to travel about 12cm to meet an egg. At fastest this takes about 40 minutes Sperm travel to an egg by swimming Period pain is caused by uterus contracting to expel the egg and uterine lining. In males about 70 million In girls it’s normal for one breast to be slightly larger than the other. In boys it’s normal for 1 teste to be a different size sperm are produced each day Eating chocolate doesn’t cause pimples, but good nutrition is important to prevent them True or False Eating lots of junk food causes pimples Sometimes boys can develop breasts during puberty People experience changes in their moods as well as changes in their bodies It’s OK to have strong feelings for another person – boy, girl, friend or adult You can always tell when a girl has her period Most girls will have started having periods by the time they are 16 If a boy has an erection in public, it shows that he is thinking about sex A girl can’t get pregnant before she has her first period or when she is menstruating A girl’s second period will come exactly one month after her first period Once a boy has had a wet dream, it is possible for him to become a father if he has sexual intercourse A girl can increase the size of her breasts by doing lots or arm exercises. If a boy masturbates too much, he will use up all his sperm There is nothing wrong if one testicle hangs lower than the other. 1. Eating lots of junk food causes pimples. Pimples occur during puberty, when an increased amount of sebum is produced. Sebum is a natural, oily secretion that acts as a lubricant for the hair and skin. The testosterone, oestrogen, and progesterone hormones released during puberty make the sebum thicken, causing it to block the pores, which results in blackheads and pimples. 2. Sometimes boys can develop breasts during puberty. Hormones can cause boys to start developing "breasts", but when the hormones settle down, these "breasts" will disappear. 3. People experience changes in their moods as well as changes in their bodies. Feeling good one minute and down the next is very common during puberty. People gradually become less moody as they get used to their adult body and the new feelings that come with it. 4. It's OK to have strong feelings for another person - boy, girl, friend, or adult. Such strong feelings (or "crushes") are part of growing up. 5. You can always tell when a girl has her period. Sanitary pads and tampons are made so that they do not show through clothing. Some women feel irritable before, during, or after their period, but they may have similar moods at other times too. 6. Most girls will have started having periods by the time they are 16. Menstruation can begin between the ages of 8 and 17. If a girl has not had her period by the age of 16, medical advice should be sought. 7. If a boy has an erection in public, it shows that he is thinking about sex. During puberty, erections may happen to boys when they have no conscious sexual thoughts at all. 8. A girl can't get pregnant before she has had her first period or when she is menstruating. It is possible for a girl to become pregnant if she has sexual intercourse before her periods have started, and it is also possible to become pregnant from having sexual intercourse while menstruating. 9. A girl's second period will come exactly one month after her first period. When girls start menstruating, their menstrual cycles are often not very regular. They may only menstruate three or four times in the first year. 10. Once a boy has had a wet dream, it is possible for him to become a father if he has sexual intercourse. It is possible, but it is not very likely. The first few wet dreams a boy has may not contain any sperm but just seminal fluid. As puberty advances, the testes start to produce sperm, which is then ejaculated in wet dreams. 11. A girl can increase the size of her breasts by doing lots of arm exercises. Underneath the breasts are pectoral muscles, but developing these muscles cannot increase the size of the breasts, because breasts are made up of glands and fatty tissue. (Note: When exercising, girls may need to wear supportive clothing.) 12. If a boy masturbates too much, he will use up all his sperm. The testes are continuously producing and replacing sperm. 13. There is nothing wrong if one testicle hangs lower than the other. One testicle hangs down lower than the other for nearly all boys and men. 14. It's safe for a girl to touch her pubic area. Girls need to touch their pubic area as part of their daily washing routines. Neither boys nor girls should be afraid of masturbating or worry about it. 15. There is nothing wrong with a penis if it is curved or hangs to one side. Penises vary in size and shape. 16. It is OK to flush all sanitary pads and tampons down the toilet. Sanitary pads and tampons are very absorbent and can swell to block the toilet pipes. Disposal bins should be used if they are provided. If they are not provided, then pads and tampons can be wrapped in toilet paper and put in a rubbish bin. Keeping Clean and Healthy What is good? Hygiene?
