Korean War Amber Caulfield, Michael Gelok Overview of the war ● ● ● Began as a civil war between North and South Korea Turned international when the UN, China and Soviet Union got involved The United States and the UN supported South Korea and China and the Soviets supported North Korea Events in the war ● ● ● ● June 25th, 1950- North Korea crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea North Korea quickly invaded and had taken control of the capital of Seoul by June 28th A United Nations (UN) meeting was held over the issue ○ invasion was viewed as communism endangering the free world The U.S , along with 15 other nations, sent in troops to support South Korea Events in the War cont. ● ● ● North Korea warned UN armies that crossing the 38th parallel would be viewed as a threat ○ UN ignored this warning ○ Chinese armies were sent in to help North Korea Over the next two years both sides had many small battles Representatives argued over peace terms during this time Ending the War ● ● ● July 27, 1953- UN, North Korea and China signed a armistice ○ this was only a ceasefire UN and South Korea ended the war by signing a mutual defense treaty 38th parallel became border between North and South Korea Positives/Negatives of the War Positives: ● Communism was temporarily stopped ● South Korea was freed from North Korea ● South Korea benefited from industrialization from the U.S Negatives: ● North and South Korea suffered economically ● The U.S spent a lot of money on the war ● There were many civilian casualties Casualties of the war ● In the war there were numerous casualties ● ● ● ● ● ● Korea: 3 million civilian casualties South Korea: 1.3Mil military casualties North Korea: 520,000 military casualties USA: 142,000 casualties China:900,000 casualties Helping world peace? Or hurting world peace? ● In ways, this war divided some nations further, and brought some together. ● North Korea and South Korea were separated by the 38th parallel, which was used as the border. ● USA aided South Korea by saving them from communism. ● China aided North Korea and kept them from America. ● Conflict between the USA and China gave Russia an advantage.
