THIS WEEK IN 4WM
SHANGHAI AMERICAN SCHOOL/ PUXI ELEMENTARY/WEEK OF 10 - 14- 13
Language
Arts
week in our reading
unit, “Following Characters
into Meaning,” we will be
This
exploring strategies that
readers use to grow their
ideas about a character. We
will also learn the
connections between
reading and writing
personal narratives by
paying a closer attention to
the way an author uses
details to bring a character
to life.
Writing: So far in writing we
have been exploring “seed
ideas” that we can use for
writing meaningful personal
narratives. This week we will be
digging deeper into a small
moment by focusing on
details and thick description.
This strategy can be applied to
all forms of writing.
Math
In math we completed
Unit - 2 which focused
on the base-ten-place
value system and
procedures for addition
and subtraction of multidigit whole numbers. We
also studied data
collection, organization
and analysis. This week
we will begin Unit - 3. In
this unit we will review
strategies for solving
multiplication facts, and
practice solving number
stories.
Science:
Last week we concluded our
science unit - magnetism and
electricity by conducting a final
experiment on
electromagnetism. Students
learned how to make an
electromagnet by building a
circuit board and exploring
how electromagnets can be
turned on and off.
Questions for your Kids:
- How can you make an
electromagnet stronger?
- Name some of the important parts
of a complete circuit.
- How do we connect with a character
in a story?
This week we will begin our social studies unit Geography of Asia and China.
