Dec. 15 SAC Meeting Nov. This year it is my hope to expand the technology resources that we can use in Dec. 16 Early Release classrooms. Our iPad total is now at 55! Jan 29. Storybook Character Parade 1:00 p.m. Thank you Business Partners for helping our students Create Waves of Success!! Kindergarten News As we approach the holiday season we are often asked about what items would be beneficial to our students. Some educational gifts that will help young children’s minds expand are games that involve counting, problem solving, strategizing, reading, vocabulary development and most importantly communication. Here is a quick list: Checkers, Chutes and Ladders, Apples to Apples Jr., Scrabble Jr., Trouble, Yahtzee Jr, Hi-Ho Cherry-o, Bingo, Connect Four and Boggle. Books are also a great gift. Look for books that are labeled with a reading level such as Kindergarten-First grade. The I Can Read Series contains a large amount of sight words that your child has already learned. Many popular books have also been modified for young readers. There are not too many things more rewarding than hearing your child read a book to you. Writing and drawing materials such as colored pencils, crayons, markers, a variety of paper, sidewalk chalk, scissors, drawing books and even coloring books will encourage children to use their emerging writing skills. Please continue to have your child practice reading his/her sight words daily. Continue to read and discuss books at home. Thank you! Mrs. Bartley, Ms. Foley, and Mrs. Wassem First Grade News This is an exciting time for first grade. The students are becoming more confident in their reading ability and are developing more comprehension skills. They have been learning many new sight words, phonics patterns, and writing sentences using correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. We will continue to focus on all of these skills and are learning how to go back in the text to find key details and answer questions. You can help students comprehension by having them read aloud daily and asking them to retell the story from beginning to end in sequence. Math will concentrate on adding and subtraction within 20, solving word problems, being able to explain how they arrived at an answer, and learning the place value in a two digit number. Keep practicing these skills on a daily basis. Thank you so much for your support. Second Grade News As the holidays rapidly approach, it’s important to keep your child in school and on time because we have a lot to cover in a short period of time. We will focus on money, higher level place value and word problems in math, matter in science, early American history in social studies, and in language arts the focus will be on writing narrative and opinion pieces along with story structure, analyzing informational text, and phonics skills in reading. Wow! That’s a busy agenda, but we will persevere and have fun on the journey. Happy holidays, and warm wishes for all. Third Grade News Thank you for sending in the “Turkeys in Disguise.” Students loved sharing them and participating in our voting activity! Thank you for helping your child memorize their multiplication facts – keep up the good work because we will begin “Multiplication Minute Math” when we return from the winter break. Don’t forget to read nightly for fluency and ask your child questions about what they have read. Give them opportunities to retell their book or chapter to you. Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Florio, and Ms. Wendt Mrs. Cloer, Mrs. Green, and Mrs. Howell Ms. Clark Johnson, Ms. Marriott, and Mrs. Mathewson Fourth Grade News Happy holidays everyone! We are happy to welcome Mrs. Degler to Coronado Beach 4th Grade. As we head into the holidays and begin a new year, our students will be working hard to master Florida State Standards. In math they will be using multiple strategies to solve division problems. They will also be comparing, decomposing, adding and multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. In ELA our focus will be comparing the elements of poetry, drama and prose along with informational writing. Properties of matter and forms of energy will be on the agenda for science, and identifying explorers who came to Florida and the motivations for their expeditions will be the emphasis for social studies. We wish everyone a safe, healthy and fun journey into the new year, 2016! As always, thank you for your continued support. Mrs. Degler, Mrs. Howell, and Mrs. Sokerka Fifth Grade News Students will begin comparing decimals and fractions on number lines in math. In science, we are concluding types of changes in matter, chemical and physical. Finally in social studies, the original 13 colonies will be compared and contrasted based on the region where they are located. We are excited to be taking a field trip on December 4th to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach to see some science in action! Dr. Hammond and Mrs. Sulzbach PE News It is finally going to get a little cooler. It was an unseasonably hot November. We will be playing some of the most fun running games at the school. Capture the Flag and Sharks & Minnow will be the games of the month. Make sure to dress warm on PE days since we will continue to go outside. Remember to bring your jacket back with you if you take it off during the games. It will probably end up in the Lost & Found if you forget it. Fourth and fifth graders will also be qualifying for the Elk’s Hoop Shoot this month which is a free throw competition held each year in New Smyrna Beach. All the best, Coach Heer Media News Our Reading Counts Champions for each grade level for the month of October were: 5th – Mrs. Sulzbach’ s class – 243 points 4th – Mrs. Howell’s class – 274 points 3rd – Mrs. Green’s class – 107 points 2nd – Ms. Clark’s class – 106 points 1st – Mrs. Barnes’ class – 140 points Congratulations to Mrs. Bartley’s Kindergarten class! A Storybook Character Parade is planned for January 29th. More information will be coming as we get closer to this event. Mrs. Andrews Counselor’s Corner Coronado Beach Elementary will be helping families in need this holiday season! For those interested in giving back to our community we will have our Angel Tree in the front office until December 7th. If your family would like to help, you may stop by, select a student to shop for, and drop off unwrapped gifts for him or her by December 9th. Furthermore, we are partnering with a school in Daytona to donate items for their seasonal shop. Suggested gifts might include candles, lotions, picture frames, etc. Their children can earn “shopping dollar coupons” by displaying good social skills, working hard or following school rules to “purchase” holiday presents for their loved ones. You may drop off donations to the box in the office until December 7th. Students will be learning about the word “philanthropist” in guidance lessons this December so what a great opportunity to apply this with your family. In addition, our second annual Toilet Paper Drive will be January 19th-22nd. Donations must be sealed in original packaging. Last year we were able to collect and donate 1,550 rolls! Will we be able to top that this year? Which class will collect the most and win the Golden Roll trophy for their classroom? We will soon find out! All proceeds will be donated to the Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank. Thank you for your support! Mrs. Jefferis From the Art Department Since I have been relocated to my old classroom, I am starting up my pottery unit again and we are creating some amazing pieces. Kindergarten students are starting to learn about clay by developing some lovely pinch pots. First grade is moving into the coil technique while Second grade is experimenting with coil as well but in a creative way. Third grade students are piecing together some unbelievable slab pieces and fourth and fifth grade artists are lucky enough to progress on to the potters wheel. We will be squeezing in some holiday projects soon which will catapult us into next year where we immediately jump into our Trading Card unit in full force! Mr. Hardock Music Notes Hats off to our Performing Pirates for an outstanding job honoring our country’s Veterans at the “Salute to Veterans” concert held at Chisolm Elementary School. Thank you to Ms. Buckner and Mrs. Holmgreen for leading our Pirates in singing “America” and “This Land is Your Land”. Wellness is a Way of Life Wellness is a way of life, even during the holidays! Eat Better: Try lots of different fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grains for a healthy diet. For example, walnuts are a traditional holiday snack and a good choice too. Just 1/4 cup of walnuts provides nearly a day’s worth of omega-3 essential fatty acids, a special type of protective fat that the body can’t make on its own. Learn Easier: Resist the urge to let kids munch on a lot of holiday sweets while doing homework. The best snack for studying is a bowl of grapes or other fresh fruit. Play Harder: If possible, give kids gifts that encourage them to get moving. A football, frisbee, or even a horse shoe set, anything that requires movement and exercise. Florida KidCare is our state's free or low cost health insurance program that provides comprehensive health coverage for children under 19 years old. Florida KidCare services include: doctor visits, check-ups & shots, hospital, surgery & emergency services, vision, hearing and prescriptions. Florida KidCare includes four different programs. When you apply for the insurance, Florida KidCare will check which program you may qualify for based on the child's age and family income. Please visit http://myvolusiaschools.org/student-healthservices/Pages/Florida-KidCare-HealthInsurance.aspx for information concerning Florida KidCare or the application process. PTA News The CBES PTA would like to start with a BIG THANKS to all who were a part of the Yankee Candle Fundraiser in November. Candles will be sent home before the holiday break. Our fall collection of Box Tops brought in $550 for our students! Please keep on clipping, we will have another collection of those in late spring. Some important upcoming dates are: Thursday, 12/3, 6p-7p: PTA Family Reading Night. Wednesday, 12/9, 6p-7p: PTA General Meeting in the cafeteria where we will be forming committees for the Pirate Plunder 5K, happening on March 5th of 2016. Please join us! Thank you for your support. A Special Thank You Thank you to the New Smyrna Beach Lion’s Club for inviting Coronado to present at a recent meeting. Information was shared regarding all of the great technology programs we have going on at school. The best part of the evening was when students had an opportunity to work with Lion members. Great job! Coronado Tumblers We are currently selling insulated tumblers in the front office to support our technology programs. The insulated tumblers have our Coronado logo on them and are being sold for $16.00. Show your Pirate Pride and support our students by purchasing a one of a kind tumbler!
