Welcome Blenman Families,
We want to welcome you to Blenman and to
the 2015-2016 school years. Teachers have
worked hard over the summer months attending
workshops and getting their classrooms ready for
their new learners. Teachers have been
establishing building relationships with your child
so that they can provide the best educational
experience for our students. Your child’s
attendance is important to achieve academic
success starting at 8:30 everyday! Student/
school academic learning hours are from 8:302:40 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and
until 1:40 on Wednesday. If your child arrives
after 8:35 please bring them into the front office
for a tardy slip. We recognize perfect attendance
at our quarterly assemblies
Our front office is open from 7:30-4:00
pm. Ms. Donna Bowser is our office manager.
Your child’s attendance is important to achieve
academic success. We understand that you may
need to schedule a Dr. Appt. during school time,
however if at all possible please try and schedule
after school hours. Please call 232-6500 to
report your son or daughter’s absence.
Joke of the month:
How did the barber win the race?
He knew a short cut!
Mission Statement
The mission of Blenman is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where students
develop critical thinking skills as self directed learners who are empowered to contribute
to their communities.
Vision Statement
The vision of Blenman Elementary is to prepare students to become critical thinkers,
analytical, responsible, and collaborative proactive participants in a global economy.
Safety at Blenman is always our top
priority. Before and after school we ask parents
to not drop students off in the west parking lot
by our cafeteria, this is where our buses come to
drop and pick up students. Before school,
students may be dropped off on Bentley Street
by the purple playground or on Adams Street by
the playground. All gates will be secured at
approximately 8:35. After school, students will
be directed to go to the far south of the
playground on Adams for parent pickup. Students
walking home must cross in the marked crosswalk
areas. Blenman School was built in 1941 for
approximately 200 students that lived in this
area. There was no need for buses at that time!
Since then additions to the school have been
added, however we still have the same limited
parking spaces and have 200 more students!
Thank you for your patience in picking up your
child and looking out for all students.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide
before and after school daycare at Blenman.
Please call the front office if you are in need of
childcare before or after school. Students may
not be on campus until 8:00am when our monitors
come onto duty.
Sincerely,
Cathi DeSalvo

Diffusing Anger
By Shelly Dunn, Blenman School Counselor
Arguments can cause increased family stress. No matter who is involved in an argument (parents and children, siblings, or
children and friends), quick resolution is desired as soon as possible.
When there is a disagreement between parent and child, arguing about it is futile. Arguing brings anger and discontent.
Each person involved feels they are right and wants to win. Nobody wins as long as the arguing proceeds, so it is necessary to find
ways to stop the arguing and end the conflict.
Parents can diffuse anger often by finding a way to express you understand the problem. An example like,“ I agree it seems unfair to
you,” often helps the child feel heard and understood. However, this statement does not tell the child that you agree with the child’s
opinion. It lets the child know that you understand why they feel your parental decision in unfair.
Then, using a question about how the child thinks the disagreement allows the child to do some thinking. For example, “I
agree it seems unfair to you. What do you think we can do about it?” So saying “we” helps the child know that you will work on a
solution together.
However, it is best to avoid getting into an argument in the first place. It is helpful to keep in mind to never argue with a
child over something you need them to do. Arguing about a task or behavior encourages the child to defend his/her behavior.
Therefore, tell the child what needs to be done. If the child makes the choice not to act accordingly, then a consequence would be
warranted. Parents that are confident in the role of being in charge don’t worry if their directions are not followed because they feel
secure with their requests.
Overall, it is important to remain calm when a child approaches you in an angry way. If the child is angry at you, let them
know that you will be glad to talk to them when they have calmed down using a calm quiet voice. If the child is angry at another
person, let the child know you are ready to listen and help them by asking questions in order to explore finding a solution to the
problem .
