Your child’s book will be changed on a set day each week. Please ensure their organiser is signed after each reading and make any notes about how s/he has read. Your child’s class teacher will read and take account of your comments when changing their reading book. This term’s prime learning challenge is: Key Skills and Knowledge During this half term the following skills will continue to be studied: Was Rome built in a day? To complete this challenge we will answer the following questions: Week 1 – Where is Italy and what is it like? Week 2 – How are Britain and Rome similar or different? Week 3 – How was Rome founded and how did it expand into an empire? Week 4 - What was daily life like in Ancient Rome? Week 5 – What did the Ancient Romans believe? Week 6 - Can we Design and make a class Roman Mosaic? Week 7 - What did the Ancient Romans do for entertainment and who were the gladiators? Reflection - Can I demonstrate my learning using ICT? Spanish This Term we will review basic conversation. We will also review the time in Spanish and we will use it to find out about and ask about arrivals and departures. We will learn the names of different transports and link them with the time. PE Football: To play competitive games [football] and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending. To keep possession of the ball when moving and standing still. To move to find a space when you are not in possession during a game. To vary tactics & adapt skills according to what is happening in the game. Gymnastics: To develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance on a range of apparatus (including the floor). Science – Light & Shadows: To understand that we need light in order to see things. To recognise that when there is no light it is dark. To understand how light is reflected from surfaces. To recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous. To understand how shadows are formed Geography – To locate the Italy using maps, concentrating on their mountain ranges, rivers and major cities (with a focus on Rome). To understand the geographical similarities and differences between Italy and The United Kingdom. Art – To plan and develop ideas in sketchbook and make inform choices about what media you will use for a mosaic tile. To shape, form, model and construct from observation (famous Roman mosaics) and their imagination. To evaluate their finished product explaining what went well and how they might improve in the future. PE Homework Each week your child will be set a piece of English and a piece of Maths Homework. These will be set on a Friday and will be due in on a Tuesday. As well as this, your child is expected to read at least 3 times a week to you with a record of this being made in your child’s organiser. Reading books will not be changed if this is not recorded. Your child will be expected to participate in two PE sessions per week. Could you please ensure that they have the correct kit in school (indoor and outdoor), all week as sessions may change due to hall demands, weather etc. In the very unlikely circumstance that your child is unable to take part in their PE lesson, please a written note is required in your child’s organiser. Thank you Core Skills These are the skills that your child will be learning / developing this half term. Reading Year 3 Year 4 - To read further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word. - To listen to and discuss a range of myths and legends and non-fiction explanation texts. - To read books that are structured in different ways and read for a range of purposes - To retrieve and record information from non-fiction and fiction - To understand what they have read by checking that it makes sense by discussing their understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context Writing Spelling: Year 3 - To consolidate understanding of adding suffixes and to investigate conventions related to the spelling pattern le Year 4 - To distinguish between the spelling and meaning of homophones Composition & Effect: - To plan by discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar - To compose and rehearse sentences orally (including dialogue), progressively building a varied and rich vocabulary and an increasing range of sentence structures - To use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause To combine our reading and writing work we shall be reading and writing myths and legends and explanation texts about Romans.
