MHIM in a few words August 2012 • Think before you put in your two cents’ worth • Not to be missed Think before you put in your two cents’ worth Eating at a restaurant is sometimes synonymous with guilt, especially when you come out bloated, with the feeling of having eaten three meals in one. It is well known that the quantities of fat, salt and sugar are generally higher than in meals cooked at home. However, most of us greatly appreciate the fact of leaving the house to share dinner with family or friends, and are not willing to deprive ourselves. In an ideal world, our favorite restaurant would continue to offer dishes as tasty, but with improved nutritional value. In fact, we are not so far from this reality; in the fall of 2011 the MELIOR program was launched in Quebec, a new initiative to increase the nutritional value of foods offered in restaurants, either by limiting salt , sugar and fat, decreasing portion sizes, displaying price incentives, offering whole grain products, fruits and vegetables, nuts or legumes. The restaurant only has to establish its own commitments in terms of its reality, and conclude its commitment by signing a customized charter. Restaurants in the Argenteuil MRC were all invited in June to a presentation of the program, an initiative made possible through the cooperation of the Argenteuil MRC, the Argenteuil Health and Social Services Centre, Quebec en forme Argenteuil and the Société de Développement Commercial du centre-ville de Lachute. In addition to official recognition, participating restaurants will receive increased visibility through MELIOR, an enhanced brand image and credibility. It remains to be seen which will answer the call first! So discuss it with your favorite restaurant!
