WEEK 25 Whisper-read the Text Arrange a Sentence Small Group

2
Small Group/Guided Reading
See Guided Reading Procedure Cards 1 & 2 for additional ideas.
Work with other groups of students to explore the text in
small-group sessions, as for Day 1.
Before Reading
Preview the book by using the table of contents. Ask
students to turn to selected pages, scan the information,
and give a summary of it. (Informational texts mostly do
not have to be read sequentially.)
After Reading
Read the text with the students, making the meaning clear
and making sure students can read all the words in the
book. Talk together about the way words can be worked
out and their meaning made clear.
Preview the activity pages with the students before they
move on to independent and small-group activities.
Read the Book
Students read all the text, including labels, the map and
key, and captions, noting any words or parts that cause
them problems. After they finish their read, students
work in pairs to solve as many problems as they can.
Observe students read and explore the
text. Which students can understand
the text and find information easily?
Which ones can also talk confidently
about the different genre of the
book—email, poems, for example?
Can students talk about the additional
information provided online?
Read Independently
engage in independent reading
Add other information books that include
maps to the classroom Book Corner. Have
students choose a book to investigate
with a partner.
Whisper-read the Text
read smoothly and with expression
Students listen to the audio version of The
County Fair and whisper-read along with
the audio reader. They should try to make
their voices match the phrasing of
the reader.
Arrange a Sentence
reconstruct text
• Print sentences from the text onto sentence
strips. Cut the sentences into individual
words and place them in an envelope.
• Invite students to work in pairs to
arrange the words in sentence order in
a pocket chart.
• Have them read their sentences aloud
and match them to the text.

consult print and electronic
sources to find information
Students could read The County Fair
page by page, finding information that
is online and not in the book as they
work through it.
