THE LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS
Standing 7000’ above sea level, on Jari Mountain, looking out across what is
known as “the land of a thousand hills”, I marveled at how the Lord seems to
deposit us into the historical timeline of a nation, almost an intrusion of love on
His part.
10 Years after the 1994 Rwandan genocide, our friend Pastor Joseph Karasanyi
received it by June 2005. Our team rallied quickly to send in the equipment and a
Driving out of Ottawa, returning to Toronto, I took that exhilarating call from
Joseph who shouted the good news he was “on the air”. It felt like I could hear
him all the way from Kigali without my phone. Our excitement was not misplaced.
Only 11 years earlier, nearly one million Rwandese (majority Tutsi and minority
Hutu) had been slaughtered in a genocide that shocked the world. I will never
forget that moment in 1994 either. Our founder and president George Otis Sr
rallied his High Adventure tech team and moved quickly to redirect our shortwave
radio broadcasts into that region in effort to push back “the prince of the power

Pastor Joseph is an amazing man, happiest when he is in a village,

Standing in the tragic aftermath at Ntarma where 5000 people

dichotomy. Seeing my shocked face, watching as some of our
team cried, Joseph reminded me why!
“Don, this happened because before genocide, people had
religion, but what they need is Jesus. They need a personal
relationship with Him and their hearts will be different.” Simple
really.

Good friends rallied with support and soon we had funding for
the new land, encountering Rwanda’s new process of land
purchase, which is excruciatingly slow. Many of the landowners
had been killed in the genocide and only a cautious and
meticulous process could ensure declared landowners were
actually the landowners. In our case, we located all the family
members who needed to sign the sale papers, but by now, not all
