ARTIST STATEMENT
The work is an expression of the everyday including the
effects of time. Using the vocabulary of an artificial structure I am exploring the concepts of the day; it’s banality,
and waste.
Over the past year I created work, conducted performances, and endurance challenges that explore time.
In May I spent eight days in exile on Horn Island in the
Gulf of Mexico. I studied the longer-term effects of isolation, and lived in primitive camping conditions. During the
eight days, I gathered information on the perception of
time and the social aspects of time keeping. I wondered
the island day and night creating site-specific works, and
recording my observations. On my return I created two
exhibitions exploring these concepts. October 2012 I
went without sleep for almost 40 hours. During that time
24 hours, 17:00 day 1 to 17:00 the next day, was dedicated to a confined area where I constantly created artwork.
I am still exploring the concepts from this and the Horn
Island experiences.
My preoccupations during my career as an artist are with
questioning qualities focusing primarily on beauty and
time. Often my installations are a collection of recycled
and found objects that are collaged with cast acrylic
paint. Using these found objects I construct a composition inspired from my everyday experiences from walking
through the urban environment of Seattle as well as my
more extreme performances.
Typically my mediums consist of cast acrylic paint, recycled objects, electricity, tar, joint compound, chocolate,
and honey to invite the audience to explore the creation,
refinement and use of these materials by society.
