Map Skills and Regions of Georgia 4 Week Unit of Study with Mrs. Rodenroth Throughout our in-depth study of Maps Skills and The Regions of Georgia, our students will explore the following Essential Questions. What is a compass and how do I use it to with intermediate directions? How do I read symbols on a map to interpret the map? What do the symbols on the map mean? How do I find the location of a physical feature or human feature on a map? What is a human feature/physical feature? How do the natural features of Georgia make our state unique? What are the five Georgia regions and can you describe them? What are the 6 major rivers of Georgia? Students will begin with learning about the basics of map skills during week one. During week two students will collaborate to produce a detailed map of the school along with an informational brochure about the community of Mountain Park. During week three students will research and learn about the regions of Georgia. Students will focus on one specific region to create a product which they will use to teach other members of the class with. Students will also create a clay model of the specific region including major rivers. “Dinnertime Questions” Hints for At-Home Conversations The following are suggested questions to discuss with your child as we progress through our study. Week 1 - What are maps and map keys? How do I read a map and identify some of its features? What is a compass and how do I use it to with intermediate directions? How do I read symbols on a map to interpret the map? What do the symbols on the map mean? Week 2 – What kinds of places make up a community? How do I find the location of a physical feature or human feature on a map? What is a human feature/physical feature? Weeks 3 & 4: How do the natural features of Georgia make our state unique? What are the five Georgia regions and can you describe them? What are the 6 major rivers of Georgia? Students will receive nightly homework assignments related to concepts and information that they will be processing and using during classroom time. It is important that students come to class prepared, having completed their homework, so that they may fully engage in classroom activities.
