FROM FATHER DOUG’S DESK
Dorothy Day
When Pope Francis visited the United States, he
mentioned Dorothy Day as a great American Catholic.
Many people never heard of her. Here is a little about
her life.
Dorothy Day, (November 8, 1897 – November 29,
1980) was an American journalist, social activist, and
Catholic convert. She became famous after her
conversion to Catholicism. She initially lived a
bohemian lifestyle before becoming Catholic. This
conversion is described in her autobiography, The
Long Loneliness.
Day's social activism is also described in her
autobiography. In 1917 she was imprisoned as a
member of suffragist Alice Paul's nonviolent Silent
Sentinels. In the 1930s, Day worked closely with
fellow activist Peter Maurin to establish the Catholic
Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that
combines direct aid for the poor and homeless with
nonviolent direct action on their behalf. She practiced
civil disobedience, which led to additional arrests in
1955, 1957, and in 1973 at the age of seventy-five.
Day was also an active journalist, and described
her social activism in her writings. As part of the
Catholic Worker Movement, Day co-founded the
Catholic Worker newspaper in 1933, and served as its
editor from 1933 until her death in 1980. In this
newspaper, Day advocated the Catholic economic
theory of distributism, which she considered a third
way between capitalism and socialism. Her activism
and writing gave her a national reputation as a
political radical, perhaps the most famous radical in
American Catholic Church history.
Dorothy Day's life is an inspiration for the Catholic
Church. Pope Benedict XVI used her conversion story
as an example of how to "journey towards faith... in a
secularized environment." Pope Francis included her
in a short list of exemplary Americans, together with
Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and
Thomas Merton, in his address before the United
States Congress. The Church has opened the cause for
Day's possible canonization, which was accepted by
the Holy See for investigation. Due to this, the Church
refers to her with the title of Servant of God.
Here are some of Dorothy Day’s most famous
quotations:
The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring
February 28, 2016
about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has
to start with each one of us?
Don't call me a saint. I don't want to be dismissed
so easily.
I have long since come to believe that people never
mean half of what they say, and that it is best to
disregard their talk and judge only their actions.
They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a
time, take one step at a time.
Our faith is stronger than death, our philosophy is
firmer than flesh, and the spread of the Kingdom of
God upon the earth is more sublime and more
compelling.
The legal battle against segregation is won, but the
community battle goes on.
The best thing to do with the best things in life is to
give them up.
Food for the body is not enough. There must be
food for the soul.
Knitting is very conducive to thought. It is nice to
knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then
take up the sock again.
Love casts out fear, but we have to get over the
fear in order to get close enough to love them.
Food for the Soul. Pope Francis has called us to make changes
in lifestyle, producon and consumpon to combat climate
change. Choosing carefully what we eat may be the
most effecve way to care for creaon. By reducing meat in
your family’s diet, you could cut your household’s contribuons to those emissions by 32%. Come, Taste and See a wide
array of food choices that are meatless fare. Come and gather
recipes to help you go meatless (or less meat) for the rest of
Lent and beyond. At St. Mark Church, 15800 Montrose Ave.
February 28 from noon unl it’s over. Late arrivals welcome.

Name buttons. When our parishes merged, name buttons
were a good idea. Although still a valuable tool to help us get
to know one another, it seems like they have run their course.
People do not wear them much anymore. Additionally, we are
running out of materials. If you would like a new name button
before we close shop, please sign your name at the name button table in the back.
Lenten Come To the Quiet Mini-Retreat. Join us
Saturday, March 19 from 8 a.m. until noon at the
Joseph Center for a quiet Lenten mini-retreat of
reflection and prayer. The program will be led by
parish member Mike Reiling. Information and a
sign-up sheet are on the back table in church. There
is no charge for this gathering.
Thank you for your generous support!
