Unit 5: Alive! From Algae to Zooplankton
Alive
OR NOT?
Scientists classify (sort) things as
living or non-living. Students learn
how to sort things by whether they
are alive, never alive, or dead. To be
considered alive, something has to
meet all the items on the checklist.

You’ll never see a car with a family,
You’ll never see your toys begin to grow,
And when the grass gets long in your front yard,
The house won’t grab the mower and begin to mow...
Cause they’re not alive!
They’re non-living things,
Non-living things,
They don’t even know that they can’t grow,
And I can prove that they can’t move.
They can’t shade the light when it gets too bright,
And they can’t have kids...

alive. It originated in 1850,

Explain
What makes something alive? Uncle says everything around us is either
living or non-living. Non-living things are either dead or never alive.
How do you know if something is alive?
It eats, breathes, defends, and grows! Drawings of rabbits do not eat.
They do not breathe. They do not defend. They do not grow. Therefore,
drawings never live.
Just for Fun
Make a pet rock! Find
a smooth river rock and
decorate it. Is your new pet
alive?
Do animal puppets live?
No! Puppets do not eat. They do not breathe. They do not defend.
They do not grow. Aunty says animals do all these things. Since
puppets do not, they do not live.
What’s in a
Word?
Puppet comes from the
Latin word pupa (doll).

How it works
No! Although growing is a part of the life cycle, since soap does not eat, breathe,
nor defend, it cannot be called alive. You have to answer, “Yes!” to every item on the
checklist in order to call something alive.
