CLUB NEWS LETTER 22nd August 2013 Ahoy sailor! We are on the cusp of hitting the action in terms of the spring and summer sailing calendar. SAILING I know a couple of the yachts that have been in hibernation are coming out to play this weekend, in the 3rd race day in the Club Winter Series. Remember that this is the first of six scoring series for the 2013/4 club championship, with the others being the Lufthansa Twilight Series [Oct – Dec]; the Yachtport Overnight Race; the Lufthansa Twilight Series [Jan – Mar]; the Club Summer Series; and the combined score of the two Harken Round Robben Island Races. You may discard your results from just one of these series. More information about the Club Championships is available on the club website. Good news is that we no longer have cut off times in club races. If you finish after the bridge closes, you can declare your time if you finished the course [with a supporting GPS track backup]. This means that you will be able to finish every club race you start, unless you decide otherwise, or the specific race’s sailing instruction prevents this. Markus Progli and James Largier delivered a very valuable sail trimming talk last night, which was well attended, and drew a number of good questions and interactions between the audience and these two young top sailors. The Kraken Winter Wednesday Talks have really offered a very relevant and professional set of presentations, the outlines of which you can find on the club website. If you were inspired by what Markus and James had to say, let’s see how they convert that on the water this Saturday: They will be setting the courses for us. First start 1pm, with the possibility of back to back races. Thanks very much to you both. Why don’t you download the new predict wind tracker app and get more involved in this Saturday’s race. We will soon be showing the live track in the club during races. If you are participating in the GBYC “Gaul Regatta”, or the FBYC “Spring Regatta” in False Bay in September, consider entering the Rock-to-Rock Challenge with the Kraken. This is a time trial from Barker Rock to Roman Rock, to be completed in the window period 31 August to 20 September. You need not be participant in either of the False Bay regattas to enter this challenge, it is open to all. All legitimate finishers [with valid time declaration and downloaded GPS track submitted] will be eligible for some mischief in a dark bottle, in the form of the Kraken Rum. Documented sightings of the sea monsters from the deep will be rewarded… and all corrected times will be reflected on a ladder at the yacht club. On the coastal cruising front, the momentum is building with each event, and we encourage you to get in touch with the team headed up by Alan Haefele, who have already built a track record of arranging fantastic cruising events. Have a glance at the website to the upcoming Lighthouse photographic cruise over the 2nd weekend in September. One of these summer days, there will be 50 RCYC yachts jostling for space in Clifton, Granger Bay, Robben Island, Dassen Island, etc. The onus here is for all members to get out onto the water and enjoy these cruising events. Big picture, the club will have between 8 – 12 organised coastal cruising events in a sailing year, all of which will be a lot of fun, and a great way to enjoy our local waters in the fine company of the membership of this club. Please diarise the long weekend of 14-16 December for the Crocs Summer Regatta 2013. This event will be returning to it’s routes with a more “Antiqua week style” event. The NOR will be posted shortly, and we are already planning an incredible event for all sailors in the club – and yes that includes sausages, triangles and circular random bay races…sun downer sailing…and the perfect introduction to the summer holidays at the fore! Also look out for a number of well-funded one off race days like RiskSA, and the Ambassadors Challenge, coming up in the next few months. With the Cape to Rio 2014 preparation really starting to hot up, let’s pull together as a sailing club that plays host to an outstanding and internationally renowned event. Please get hold of the sailing office, if you would like to know how you can get involved. Come Sailing! Markus Progli and James Largier will be setting the courses as part of their “Kraken” duty, which started off last night with an extremely informative presentation on better helming and sail trim. Following on from this they take over as Officer on Duty for this Club Race #3. Don’t forget two bottles of the Kraken will be in a Lucky draw after racing on Saturday! The Rock-to-Rock Challenge with Kraken – 31 August to 20 September … This is a sailing time trial to determine the fastest yacht on corrected time (RCYC TCF) under sail from Barker’s Rock to Roman Rock, by any type of yacht with the appropriate COF for the voyage envisaged, and registered for the race with RCYC. During the sailing window, a Kraken ladder of all corrected times will be kept on display at RCYC. The sailing window opens at 00h00 31 August and closes at 24h00 20 September 2013. The annual Rock-to-Rock is awarded to the challenger with fastest corrected time for the roundthe –peninsula voyage under sail, with the prescribed annual window for sailing. The challenge coincides with the delivery period for yachts entering Gaul regatta at GBYC and Spring Regatta at FBYC. It is open to yachts from all yacht clubs. Every yacht that successfully completes the challenge by starting, finishing and recoding a time within the stipulated rules will be reward with a bottle of The Kraken Black Spiced Rum. Each competing yacht will submit a declaration, signed by the skipper and every crew member, stating their GPS start and finish time. Every yacht will make use and save a GPS tract (at 15m intervals) that can be inspected to prove the detail of their full voyage. Mooring at RCYC, GBYC, FBYC, HBYC are available subject to availability at the rates and terms dictated by those clubs and must be arranged in advance by each yacht. However, only if you are entered in and competing in FBYC Spring Regatta, and/or GBYC Gaul Regatta, are there mooring incentives available from those clubs subject to availability, and under strictly stipulated conditions and date limits. All RCYC yachts are invited and strongly encouraged to take part in the 2013 Riso Gaul Regatta. Click the link for all entry documents. This Saturday, there will be just 42 days to the opening cruise. That's just enough time to prepare if you are that way inclined, but it is certainly enough time to find out exactly who's yacht is moored next to the one you sail, to motivate them to get out onto the water for the day, and certainly enough time to get your family, friends and crew together to join your yachting neighbours out on the water in a celebration of sailing in Cape Town.
