about MAKE SOUTH BEND
Hey everyone,
I wanted to let you know about
some new additions to this
catalogue. We are taking more of
a magazine route with feature
articles about makers, artists,
events and the like. You know,
things that make South Bend a
cool place to live. The vision of MAKE SOUTH
BEND is to create a community
space to educate, inspire and
support local artists, makers and
creative community members
through a shared working space
and tools, weekly classes and a
curated gift shop and gallery of
local goods and art.
So you'll find a little bit about our
fall featured artists. We change
the art in the gallery each month
so you can always discover new
local art. We support local makers,
entrepreneurs and artists to turn
their passion into a living through
the low cost of s
hared space and
tools, through mentoring and
supportive collaboration and
through the exposure of the
physical and online store. We
offer community members of all
ages and backgrounds the chance
to learn new skills and art forms
through weekly classes and foster
their appreciation of handmade
goods. The curated gift shop
offers starting artists and makers
a place to sell their work and
would help the community easily
find locally handmade goods so
they can support these artisans.
We also are hosting a music and
art festival here in River Park
called Rebel Art Fest. It'll be
showcasing some of the unique
talent in the area. Don't miss it.
Then of course, you can still see
what classes are planned for the
fall and plan ahead to attend a
few. Hope you find this issue
entertaining and informative. Michelle
MAKE SOUTH BEND was started
in February of 2015 by local artist,
maker and entrepreneur Michelle
FitzGerald after teaching middle
school English didn't quite keep
her interest. Always trying
something new, Michelle often
leads DIY classes at MAKE. 01 I MAKESOUTHBEND.COM

5 THINGS TO DO
@MAKE SOUTH
BEND
What's a Makerspace?
Basically, this is your place to come and
use tools and equipment to make things.
Starting a business, have school project
to finish, just want to learn something
new? This place is for you.
You can start using the space and tools
for as little as $10 for a day pass or jump
all the way in with monthly
memberships starting at $25/month for
students and seniors. It's just $40 for the
standard adult membership.
What do you get with membership?
Besides access to the entire makerspace
and its tools all month, you get discounts
on classes, laser cutting and 3D
printing. You also get a shelf space
to store projects in between
working.
We are also working towards
adding keyed access for members
to get even more time in the space,
but we'll see how quickly we can get
that to happen. Currently,
members can come in to work
Tuesday through Saturday 12-8pm.

FALL FEATURED ARTISTS
Karen Myriam Manda
Vazquez Nemes Nicodemus
Photorealistic Artist
Rogue Taxidermist
Photographer
Manda Vazquez is an emerging
photorealistic portrait artist from
South Bend, IN. She may be self
taught, but her works in oil, pastel
and charcoal will astound you.
La Grotesquerie is the Midwest
studio of Karen Nemes, a
cheerful subversive who enjoys
digging through junk piles,
dancing at punk shows,
planting flowers, and teaching
babies how to spit.
Originally from Guatemala City,
Guatemala. Myriam Nicodemus grew
up in South Bend, Indiana and has
called many places home in the last
10 years. She just recently moved
back to South Bend loves getting to
know her hometown all over again.
In her spare time, she creates
rogue taxidermy, oddities, wet
specimens, memento mori,
Halloween displays, and scary
dolls. As a result, her children
aren't afraid of anything.
For Myriam, photography was a
stepping stone towards her true love
of documentary film. You'll see that in
her work, stories coming to life from
the photos she takes. even creating
completely new stories with her more
dreamlike photography.
Many people are attracted to her
work for her portrayals of pop
culture faces like Bill Murray, Mad
Max, and even entire groups like The
Guardians of the Galaxy. These
simple and emotive faces draw you
in and Manda's surrealistic and
conceptual additions keep your gaze
longer.
Karen is an award-winning
artist, placing second at the
2015 Baltimore Taxidermy
Open, and first at the 2016
Philadelphia Alt Taxidermy
Competition.

we invite you to the Rebel
Art Fest instead.
At MAKE SOUTH BEND, we strive to help artists and makers do more of what
they love and bring their work to the community through events like our
Makers Market. Each month, we invite different makers who fit that month's
theme to set up and sell their work. These events are free and open to the
public to shop, meet the makers and try a free craft.
You'll see a new group of six to twelve artists, makers and craftsmen at each
market. Put it on your calendar and then come out to support your local
makers.

CALLING
ARTISTS,
MAKERS,
REBEL ART FEST is a curated showcase of local makers,
artists and musicians with the best modern craft, design
and sound. Enjoy music by local bands, shop
handcrafted goods, view fun and irreverent art, take a
bite from a food truck or two, and try a DIY project as
you wander the festival, set in South Bend's River Park
neighborhood. Our first festival is scheduled for
Saturday, September 17 from 10-4 pm along 23rd Street
between Mishawaka Ave. and the River Park United
Methodist Church.
The festival is the brainchild of maker and artist, Michelle
FitzGerald and musician and maker, Nathaniel FitzGerald
who wish to support and encourage the creative makers
in South Bend and bring more life to River Park. The
neighborhood is home to their makerspace, MAKE
SOUTH BEND; community space and music venue, The
Well; IUSB and the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts;
Merriman's Playhouse jazz venue; and home to many
creative neighbors such as sculptor Victor Riley who
created totem poles around River Park and the greater
South Bend area. River Park is home to musicians like
Letters From Earth, SPACESHIPS, Analecta, Paul Erdman,
and more.
