CHART OF THE MONTH
Rural Oxfordshire still ranked relatively poorly
on geographical barriers to services
November 2015
According to the latest Indices of Deprivation, on the measure of geographical barriers to
services (a sub domain of the overall index), 85 of the 407 lower super output areas* in
Oxfordshire are ranked in the 10% most deprived areas in England.

The geographical barriers to services sub domain includes road distance to GP
surgery, post office, primary school and supermarket / convenience store.
In those areas which are in rural Oxfordshire (on the ONS rural/urban classification), almost
half (46%) of lower super output areas are ranked in the 10% most deprived on barriers to
services.

IMD Geographical Barriers to Services sub-domain 2015
The number (and proportion) of areas in the most deprived 10% in Oxfordshire on
geographical barriers to services is slightly above the previous (2010) Indices of Deprivation.
This means that, relative to other areas in England, the position in Oxfordshire appears to
have worsened.
The district showing the greatest difference is Vale of White Horse which has gone from 16
areas in the worst 10% in 2010 to 23 areas in that category in 2015.
Further work is needed to understand the cause of this change in ranking.

NOTES

The overall Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) rank is made up of seven “domains” of deprivation:
Income Deprivation; Employment Deprivation; Education, Skills and Training Deprivation; Health
Deprivation and Disability; Barriers to Housing & Services; Crime; Living Environment.

The Barriers to Housing and Services Domain measures the physical and financial accessibility of
housing and local services. The indicators fall into two sub-domains: ‘geographical barriers’, which
relate to the physical proximity of local services, and ‘wider barriers’ which includes issues relating to
access to housing such as affordability. This publication reports on the geographical barriers sub
domain only.

Further information about the English Indices of Deprivation is available from the Dept. for
Communities and Local Government website: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/englishindices-of-deprivation-2015
