2 May. 2016
Summer is nearly upon us and there is no better time to talk about membership sales. I bet I am right when I say most members are unaware of just how
successful FHCC is when it comes to membership levels when compared to
many of our neighboring private clubs. We enjoy a nearly full membership
while many clubs around us have membership levels down 120, 150 or more
members. Having said that, I believe that our continued success will only be
achieved if the membership of FHCC understands, accepts and embraces
what will be required to attract and retain new members in the future. From
the mouths of the private club “experts” of the world, successful clubs will
need to first and foremost become more family orientated. The days of dad
using the club as a refuge from work (and family!) are long gone. Today’s
generation will consider joining a club only if the club offers something for
everyone in the family and therefore successful clubs of the future must work
non-stop to find activities for one and all. Expanded fitness centers that include yoga, Pilates and aerobics will be as important as a quality golf course.
Children activities must be offered year round not just during summer camp.
Business centers for members to hold meetings, phone conversations and
video conferences must be available. Secondly, tomorrow’s clubs need to be
more casual and relaxed. The Bushwood “snobatorium” concept from the
movie Caddyshack is truly a concept from the past. Sure many of our elder
members constantly remind us of the good old days back when members
wore coats and ties when going to the club for dinner but that does not work
for today’s member. Shorts and blue jeans are in vogue for young and old
alike, so clubs that insist on hanging on to traditions like this are going to be
hard pressed to align with the member wants of tomorrow. Finally, tomorrow’s club needs to remain value orientated. Members must constantly be
reminded that their dues and fees provide them the benefit of not only the
exclusivity of a private club, but quality food, beverage and social events
below market price.
While your Club is constantly strategizing on ways to entice new members
to join, I believe existing members need to accept that each one of us has a
responsibility to promote our club as much and as often as possible. We must
be consistently encouraging our relatives, friends, neighbors and business
associates to consider membership. This should be done with or without
the incentives offered by the Club for referrals. So in closing, I’m asking all
members to take a very active role in keeping our Club the “best of the best”
by making every effort to bring in at least one new member every year.
See you around the Club,
Kristine

I am happy to announce that my wife, Erica, and I are
expecting a baby girl coming this September, our first
child. We are thrilled and cannot wait for her to come
and will anxiously await her throughout the summer
months.
CHEF PETER Phan
Mother’s day this year will be extra special because
Erica will be an expecting mother and I would like to
take this opportunity to do something really special for
her. I will prepare five of her favorite meals in one dinner this Mother’s Day weekend. I would like to share
what those five dishes will be with you this month. For
those of you who want to do something special for
your wife or mother, I invite you to join us for a very
special Mother’s Day Brunch. I am honored to
be cooking for those special moms out there
at Friendly Hills. Don’t forget to call or e-mail
Evelyn to make your reservations.
1. Ahi Tuna Poke
Every time we visit Hawaii we always order Ahi
Tuna Poke.
2. Beet Salad
My wife never liked beets as a kid until I made this
beet salad that I roast with a little citrus.
3. Pan Seared Scallops
My whole family loves scallops and so scallops just
grew on her and she now loves them just like the rest of
my family.
4. Chimichurri Skirt Steak
I love to make her this dish because on our first date
she ordered a Chimichurri Skirt Steak. This dish is
blast from the past.
5. Panna Cotta
This is an Italian dessert that is sort of like a creamy
jello. You can flavor it anyway you like. This dessert
is special because this is the first dessert I taught her
how to make from scratch. (No brownie and cake
mix here.)

This year’s Unicorn Member-Guest Tournament
turned out to be one for the ages. A full field of 64
teams came out to win one of the club’s most prestigious prizes. After seven grueling nine hole matches,
the winners of each of the eight flights, plus two wild
card teams, go on to face one another in a 5 hole
accumulative alternate shot format. A percentage of
handicap is then deducted from their 5 hole score and
the team with the lowest score at the conclusion of 5
holes is crowned Unicorn Champions.
At the end of play, three teams stood on the
eighteenth green to win; the teams of Woo Lee and
Johnny Wu, Greg Nordbak and Dick Jones, and Peter
Zhang and John Quach. A great effort was made from
each of the teams to claim the title. When all the putts
were holed it was the team of Zhang and Quach that
prevailed over the field and won the 2016 Unicorn
Member-Guest Championship. Special thanks to
Unicorn Chair Desi Cabral and his committee for all
their help.

Of Course
MICHAEL WOLPOFF
Hello from the Golf Course Maintenance Department!
The Unicorn and Fairway Festivals are upon us and all
of our labor is currently focused on these great events!
April did not bring us much in the way of showers,
however, it has delivered some more warm weather.
We saw highs of 91 and 92 over 4 days in the middle of
the month. The year is shaping up to be another warm
and dry one. On a global scale, the past 11 months
have all set new global records for high average temperatures.
As we move past our Member Guest events we will be
getting back into the swing of our agronomic maintenance practices. This will involve the aerification
of fairways, deep tine venting of fairways and greens,
venting of greens, sand topdressing of fairways, and
many other projects around the course.
Coupled with the fairway aerification will be the
utilization of those plugs to help spread kikuyugrass in
rough areas currently dominated by cool season turf.
We have transformed approximately 5 acres of such
areas over the past two seasons through this method
and will continue to do so moving forward.
A new anti-slip walking mat will be installed on the
cart path leading from 8 tee down to the base of the hill
as this path can be slippery when it has any moisture
on it. The installation is scheduled for May, 16th.
We will be continuing to install plant material and
irrigation on several slope areas around the course
as well. This project will likely run throughout the
remainder of 2016 as there are many areas we would
like to address.
Our staff has been working on a daily basis to reduce
the populations of grasses and weeds in our new Landscape Enhancement Zones. They are each collecting
a 5 gallon bucket full of grass and weeds on a daily
basis. This is in addition to our two employees who
are dedicated to the spraying, edging, and irrigation of
these areas.
We have made several adjustments to our maintenance
calendar this year and are looking forward to a very
successful summer season!
Thank you for your support!

GOLDEN RULES OF DOUBLES
Jorge Schneider
Always try to target your opponents’ feet.
Take advantage of opponents playing oneup-one-back by targeting the area behind
the net person. Aim for the center when
rallying at fast speed.
“Down de middle solves the riddle”.
Whenever you are on the defensive do
not change directions; only when you are
the aggressor change the direction of the
ball. This will help you to eliminate many
unforced errors from your game.
