ALL STUDENTS DRESS CODE Student Council and the faculty worked hard this May to produce a new dress code for the 20152016 school year. In addition to preserving a standard of neatness during the academic morning, we sought to resolve the current disparity between the boys’ and girls’ dress codes; to acknowledge the changing standards of formality in the modern working world; and to craft something clearer and more easily implemented. Please read the genderspecific rules in the charts that follow for a complete description of acceptable clothing. An Overview of the Changes ➢ Monday through Thursday students will dress in “business casual” attire during the academic morning (breakfast through lunch). Business casual for boys means a collared shirt (no tie), polo shirt, or turtleneck tucked in and worn with dress pants or tailored jeans, belted; for girls, it means dress pants, tailored jeans, or a skirt worn with a blouse or polo shirt (dresses are also acceptable). ➢ Jeans are now allowed Monday through Thursday, provided that they meet the “business casual” standard —i.e., they are not ripped or disheveled in appearance; they are uniform in color (dark, usually, though colored denim is allowed); and they fit properly (not too tight or too baggy). ➢ Mondays will also be school spirit day. On these days, students can wear TJ logo shirts (including logo sweatshirts and hoodies), along with business casual attire in all other areas. (This replaces the practice of wearing logo shirts on all varsity game days; now logo shirts will only be worn on Mondays.) ➢ Fridays, students will dress in formal business attire, similar to the previous dress code. For boys, this includes a jacket and tie. For girls, this may include a dress or a blouse with a skirt or dress pants. No polo shirts or turtlenecks may be worn on Fridays. A General Note on Neatness Previous standards for neatness remain in place: underwear cannot be visible; shirts with large writing or symbols cannot be worn; all clothes should be free from holes, tears, and stains; belts should be worn with pants that have belt loops (for both genders); and dress shoes or sandals (no tennis shoes or flip flops) must still be worn during the academic morning. If a teacher feels that a student, while dressed in the appropriate “dress code” clothes, still looks sloppy (i.e., wrinkled, dirty, or torn clothing), the student may be asked to change. Dresscode rules also apply to outside events, such as attending plays and concerts. Afternoons and Beyond Dress is casual in the afternoons, at dinner, and on weekends. Students should not wear clothing or accessories that include logos or pictures of alcohol or drugs or that make overt sexual references. At dinner, casual but clean dress is acceptable with the following stipulations: no tank tops or shorts that are overly revealing, no bathing suits, bathrobes, hats, or clothes that were worn to athletics and have not been cleaned since. Students should be showered and clean as well when attending meals. If a teacher feels that a student’s attire is too wrinkled, torn, dirty, or smelly for someone to sit next to him or her, the student may be asked to change clothes. Dress Code for Athletics All students must dress appropriately for athletics. Specific guidelines in addition to those listed here may be issued by the athletic coach/teacher. Students should wear shoes appropriate for the sport they are playing, such as tennis shoes (soles slide on court), basketball shoes (soles do not slide on court), soccer shoes (cleats) and shin guards. No hardsoled shoes are permitted on the gym floor at any time. Appropriate socks are required as well. Girls’ sports bras must be covered by a shirt during athletics and in public areas, and boys must wear shirts during athletics. We suggest that you bring clothing suitable for all of this weather. For the cold you will need a heavy winter coat as well as lighterweight jackets and a hat, gloves, and boots. For the rain, an umbrella or raincoat will prevent you from getting soaked going from dorm to classes and meals. All students are expected to wear clothing appropriate to the season and may be asked to change if dressed inappropriately.
