Summer August 2016 WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL J E N K IN S JA G UA R S Dear Jaguar Nation, Jenkins Middle School 6410 Austin Bluffs Parkway Colorado Springs, CO 80923 719-328-5300 Let me be the first to welcome you to Jenkins Middle School for the 2016-2017 school year. I hope that you had a wonderful summer with family and friends. Once again, “E² - Everybody Engaged” and “Leave a Legacy” will be the driving forces behind all that we do to make this a year to remember for our Jenkins families. Our goal is to encourage all students to get plugged into a club, sport, or activity at school beyond the classroom as a way to become better connected with the student body and school. For parents, we will be offering the opportunity to serve on our WatchDog team, Jag Task Force team, and informational evenings to learn about various aspects of the middle school educational experience. A team effort is required in order for us to achieve the outcome that we all desire for our students. We will be offering a Parent Technology and Resources Night on September 15th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. to give you the chance to learn about our curriculum and technology resources. I strongly encourage every family to send one parent to this event. This will be an important evening to mark on your calendar as it will equip you with skills and knowledge to help you better support your student throughout the year. The format will be in the form of a mini-conference so that you can choose which sessions you want more information about. This allows you to attend the sessions that you want to learn more about and not have to sit through things you already know. Another important topic for the year is our work around the idea of “Leave a Legacy.” The basic principles behind this motto are leadership, service, reputation, and understanding the importance of one’s actions toward making a positive and lasting impact on those around you. We will launch our “Leave a Legacy” campaign in September and will have various learning opportunities throughout the year to empower our students to leave a legacy they can be proud of. It isn’t enough to just go through the motions of school and life. Instead, our mission is to prepare our students for success beyond the walls of Jenkins Middle School. We want our students to look back on their middle school experience and be able to speak about the lasting, positive impact our school had on their lives. Then, our challenge to the students is to pay it forward in their future endeavors! Please be sure to look carefully through the newsletter and note some of the big dates coming up as we launch into the new school year. We look forward to opening our doors to everybody and, as always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact us. We love our Jenkins families and are here to serve you. Once again, welcome and enjoy the last few days of summer. The safety of D-11 students, staff, and parents is the first consideration as difficult decisions are made about school closings, early safety dismissals, and delayed safety starts. You as parents make the final decision concerning the safety of your child. If you think conditions are unsafe when schools are open, you may keep your child at home. Your child's absence will be excused, and all work can be made up without penalty, once you have contacted the school. Once a decision has been made, all information will be posted on the District 11 Web site at http://www.d11.org/ weather.htm <http://www.cssd11.k12.co.us/weather.htm> in both English and Spanish. You can also find up-to-date information on Comcast Channel 16 (the District 11 Channel) or by calling 520-2000. Local radio and TV stations will be notified as soon as the district decision has been made. 7 Leave a Legacy How do you want to be remembered? If anybody were asked to describe you in 3 words, what would they say about you? What have you done to make a positive and lasting impact on others and the places you have come from? These are the questions our students will be confronted with when we launch our “Leave a Legacy” campaign. We want our students to be different in a good way. Our mission is to challenge our students to make decisions and think through their actions because they want to leave a legacy they can be proud of. We want to empower our students to reflect on each day asking, “Did I help or hurt my legacy today through my words, thoughts, and actions?” It is our goal to show students the power of being aware and also intentional about the way they conduct themselves in every conversation, task, and situation. Then, when somebody is asked to describe a Jenkins student in 3 words, the answer sounds something like this: “Leader, servant, caring.” Photo by Lynne Boutt RONALD MCDONALD CARE MOBILE The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile offers checkups, immunizations, and medical and dental care to children through the age of 21. The purpose of the training is to complete necessary district paperwork, get volunteers into the database right away, inform volunteers of school expectations, and help everybody understand how best to keep our students’ safety first in all situations. Volunteer training must occur before anybody is allowed access to our students. We will find a way to make sure that interested volunteers get trained as soon as possible so that you can begin supporting the great work we do at Jenkins. Jag Task Force Who: All parents When: Beginning in August, sign up table at Open House What: This program creates a win-win situation for parents and staff. Teachers are able to utilize parent volunteers to complete miscellaneous tasks for their lesson planning and classroom while parents enjoy the chance to be actively involved in the school. It also provides a venue for parents to meet one another and build relationships through service to the school. There will be an information and sign up table at Open House. Watch D.O.G.S. Who: Dads of Jenkins students When: September 8, 2016 at 6:00 pm What: This is a program that draws Dads of Great Students (Watch D.O.G.S) into the building as an extra support throughout the school. It is a great opportunity for dads to see how the school functions while lending a helping hand with outside duty before/ after school, in the classroom with various tasks and assignments, and any other way to assist our staff and students. There will be an information and sign up table at Open House but the main kickoff event is on August 29th. Parent Technology and Resources Night Who: All parents When: September 15, 2016 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm What: This is a night designed for parents to learn about the support resources available to you and your student with our curriculum. We strongly encourage parents to come and learn about each product so that they not only have a better understanding of what tools are being used to help instruct their student, but also how they can use and monitor the tools at home to increase student achievement. Furthermore, we help parents get signed up for Parent Connect on “Q,” sign up for D11 NTouch, and do a quick tour of our Jenkins website and our new Facebook site. This night is designed for parents to walk away with a clear understanding of what tools they have at their fingertips to stay connected with what is happening at Jenkins and serve as a supportive team member at home. DISTRICT 11—DRESS CODE STUDENT DRESS, ACCESSORIES & GROOMING SCOPE AND PURPOSE The Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education (the Board) is committed to creating a learning environment that is safe, conducive to high student achievement, free from unnecessary disruption and gang activity or influence. The Board believes that the manner in which students dress, accessorize and groom themselves affects the learning environment. By their acceptable appearance (which includes dress, accessories and other body adornments, and grooming), students help create an environment that is conducive to their own, as well as all students' learning. Students' appearance, therefore, clearly has a direct and indirect influence on school discipline, academic achievement, and student success. During school hours students' appearance shall be acceptable for the classroom and reinforce a positive learning environment. In addition, students' appearance at school-related functions including, but not limited to, special occasions and activities under the jurisdiction of the school, shall be acceptable for these occasions, regardless of where or when such occasions or activities occur. Clothing for school or school functions is hereinafter referred to as school attire. The Principal of any school may establish additional guidelines for its students with the approval of the Superintendent. Such guidelines may not fall below the minimum standards set out in this policy. Guidelines must ensure that the dress code does not single out or discriminate against religious expression or any other protected right. Students and parents/guardians shall be informed of the existence of the dress code, any guidelines, and consequences for violations at the time of initial enrollment and at the outset of each school year. 10 DISTRICT 11—DRESS CODE STUDENT DRESS, ACCESSORIES, AND GROOMING SCOPE AND PURPOSE (CONTINUED) The Board supports the development of school uniform programs in order to maintain and promote orderly school functions, student safety and a positive learning environment. School uniform decisions shall be left to the school site, subject to Superintendent approval and the requirements of this policy. The input of staff, students and parents/guardians will be encouraged, in all such decisions. Parents/guardians may opt their students out of the uniform program by submitting a waiver request to the building principal. Any parent/guardian whose student has been granted an opt out waiver by the principal or his/her designee shall not be denied attendance at school, penalized or otherwise subject to disciplinary action for failing to wear a uniform. Any student who does not wear the designated uniform, or who does not have an approved opt out waiver, is subject to disciplinary action by the principal or his/her designee. School Attire Dress code policies are established to promote uniformity of dress and to define and prohibit students from wearing apparel that is deemed disruptive to the learning environment or to the maintenance of a safe and orderly school. Student appearance is expected to be acceptable for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing accessories, or body adornments that interfere with or disrupt the educational environment are unacceptable. Parents/guardians of students requiring accommodation for religious beliefs, disability, or other good cause should contact the principal. 1. Clothing should be worn as designed and should cover private parts of the body. Clothing that inappropriately bares or exposes private parts of a body, including but not limited to the stomach, areas above mid-thigh, buttocks, back and breasts is unacceptable school attire. 2. Clothes, paraphernalia, jewelry, or body adornment that contain advertisements, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that are sexually suggestive; gang-, drug-, or alcohol related; obscene, profane, promote hate, or are disruptive or potentially disruptive to the learning environment are unacceptable school attire. 3. Ill-fitting clothing (i.e. clothing that is TOO TIGHT or too loose) is unacceptable school attire. 4. Clothing must cover undergarments. Clothing that is worn in such a manner as to expose undergarments (i.e. boxer shorts, bras, underwear) is unacceptable for school. 5. Cut-off t-shirts, half shirts, midriffs, tops with spaghetti straps, tube tops, see through or revealing tops are unacceptable school attire. 6. Pants or shorts that are in the mid-thigh range or longer where the waistband rises to at least the hips are acceptable school attire. 7. Skirts or dresses that are mid-thigh or longer where the waistband rises to at least the hips are acceptable school attire. 8. Acceptable footwear is required to be worn at all times. Bedroom slippers are considered unacceptable school attire. 9. Items considered sleepwear or lounge pants are considered unacceptable school attire. 10. Sunglasses and hats are unacceptable school attire, unless being worn for protection from sun and approved by a teacher or administrator to be worn during and outside school activity. Physical Education Acceptable athletic clothing may be worn in physical education classes. Clothing normally worn when participating in school sponsored extracurricular or sports activities may be worn during normal school hours with prior approval from the Principal. All students are required to dress appropriately for physical education. The uniform to be worn is: 1. Gym shorts with elastic waistbands (cut-off jean shorts are not appropriate gym attire) 2. T-shirts (shirts with sleeves) 3. Tennis shoes and socks 4. Warm-up suits, sweat suits, sweat pants and sweat shirts are acceptable over shorts and T-shirts Implementation Any students who come to school without proper attention having been given to their appearance, which includes cleanliness, in violation of this policy may be asked to cover the non-complying clothing, disciplined, sent home to be properly prepared for school, and required to prepare himself or herself for the classroom before re-entering school. Students who violate this policy in a continuing or flagrant manner may also be recommended for suspension and/or expulsion. A Principal or her/his designee may authorize exceptions from the above dress restrictions for specially-designated days, health reasons, or for school-sponsored activities.
