REPORTED DISEASE IN ILLINOIS
In 2012 there were more than 67,000 cases of chlamydia in Illinois. Chlamydia is transmitted through unprotected
anal, oral and vaginal sex. Untreated chlamydia infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic
pregnancies and infertility. Women are at a greater risk than men of getting a chlamydia infection.

GONORRHEA CAN HAVE SERIOUS SIDE

In 2012 there were more than 18,000 cases of gonorrhea in Illinois. Gonorrhea can cause an infection in the anus,
eyes, mouth, penis, throat, urinary tract or uterus and is transmitted through unprotected anal, oral and vaginal sex.
Many women and men with gonorrhea do not have symptoms.

SYPHILIS MOST COMMONLY REPORTED IN MEN
In 2012 there were 1,500 cases of syphilis in Illinois. Syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with syphilis
sores during unprotected anal, oral and vaginal sex. Early symptoms of syphilis are a sore and later symptoms may
be a rash, headache, fever, sore throat, aches, hair loss, and swollen joints. If syphilis is not treated, it can cause
arthritis, blindness, heart disease, mental illness, and death.
