The program pairs excerpts of John Adams' John's Book of Alleged Dances with the New York premiere of Kettle Corn Co-Artistic Director Chris Rogerson's String Quartet No. 2. The quartet will also play short works by Michael Ippolito and Timo Andres, who will join the quartet as a pianist to close the program with Robert Schumann's masterful Piano Quintet. As always, KCNM will be encouraging listeners to drop the concert-hall decorum for a more casual experience including time to mingle with the artists, and its signature snacks: beer, wine, and kettle corn, generously donated and complimentary, courtesy of Kettle Corn NYC and Brooklyn Brewery. Kettle corn and drinks are served at 7pm, concert starts shortly after; tickets are $20, available at the door or by pre-order through kettlecornnewmusic.com. Kettle Corn New Music is quickly becoming a mainstay of the New York City new music community, developing a listenership based on curatorial flair and youthful artistic passion while working to "make performances a less finicky affair... far more engagingly than most." (The New York Times) Kettle Corn is building its reputation around producing contemporary classical performances “with all of the prestige but none of the pomp” (Feast of Music), programming a combination of established masterworks, living classics, and American premieres. “Of course, nothing goes together better than popcorn, beer and new music.” (I Care If You Listen) PROGRAM: Chris Rogerson (b. 1988) String Quartet No. 2 (New York Premiere) John Adams (b. 1947) John's Book of Alleged Dances (selections) Timo Andres (b. 1985) Early to Rise Michael Ippolito (b. 1985) String Quartet No. 3 "Songlines" Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) Piano Quintet ABOUT THE ARTISTS First Prize winners of the 7th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2011, top prizewinners and Listeners' Choice Award recipients in the 2011 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and winners of the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the 60th annual Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition in 2006, the internationally acclaimed Attacca Quartet has become one of America's premier young performing ensembles. During our college years, we often played our favorite music for one another, sitting in our dorm rooms, passing around a big bag of kettle corn. We frequently found these listening sessions to be a rewarding alternative to more formal, traditional concerts, and we want to bring this experience to a public forum. We feel passionately that contemporary classical music of the highest quality can be shared in a relaxed and welcoming environment. We go to movies to enjoy ourselves, even when our minds are challenged and stimulated. In the same way, Kettle Corn New Music presents music drawn from a broad range of styles and aesthetic backgrounds in an atmosphere where it can be heard as both entertaining and thought-provoking. Kettle Corn New Music isn’t about a particular style or group of composers. Rather, it’s an approach to listening that embraces music as both art and entertainment.
