Empowering Individuals to Reach Their Fullest Potential
January 2017 Edition
From the Desk of . . .
This is a special time of the year for those who celebrate the spirit of Christmas. It is a time
we’re reminded to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. God so loved mankind that he gave
us eternal life through his son, Christ Jesus. It is from this extravagant gift that we have come to
value the richness of family and the power of love.
It is this season when we think of others before ourselves and appreciate the joy shared on their
faces as presents are unwrapped and hearts’ desires fulfilled. For Carobell, it’s all of the above and then some.
It is this spirit of generosity always in force that excels above and beyond what we can even imagine for those we
serve. It is the gatherings with their families and friends; the breaking of bread and fellowship; reminiscing over
past times and the joy of being together for another year, which continues to remind us of how good life has been
to us. Carobell is here to be a blessing to others!
In closing, I thank the community at large, our volunteers and friends of Carobell alike for your thoughtfulness to
Carobell. We are here today because you believed in us from the beginning and your commitments have not
wavered.
Vanessa Ervin – President CEO
May you have the spirit of Christmas, which is peace;
The gladness of Christmas, which is hope;
And the heart of Christmas, which is love.
May the splendor of this season remind you of Him who is worthy of all our praise.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Getting Healthy in the New Year
There are all sorts of “health” we should consider when we think about getting healthy. There is our physical health, which
is what most of us mean when we talk about someone being healthy. In addition to physical health, there are our mental
health and our financial health to consider. In order to be truly healthy we need to work on all aspects of our health.
We all know the secret, which isn’t a secret at all, of good physical health. We all know how simple it is, but it can be so
HARD to do the right things. Just in case you don’t know, or need a reminder, here is the “secret” formula to good physical
health:
Maintain a healthy body weight
Eat a balanced diet
Exercise
Don’t smoke
Don’t drink or drink only in moderation
Get enough sleep
For those of you who have been here awhile you are well aware that with January comes Lighten Up Onslow. LUO is a
team based weight loss program and for 6 years in a row, tiny little Carobell has had a winning team in the top-5 finishers.
If you want to kick start your pursuit of better physical health, LUO is a great place to start.
Let’s take a minute to talk about mental health. Everyone goes through struggles in life. These struggles can lead to depression, substance abuse and other mental health problems. While not all mental health problems can be avoided, we
can actually strengthen our mental selves in much the same way we strengthen our physical selves. Some ways to stay
mentally healthy are:
Meditate/pray
Save some time each day to work on you
healthy personal and romantic relationships
Get enough sleep
Stay in good physical health Maintain
Practice Yoga
Need a place to start? Carobell offers a free yoga class once a month to all employees, generously sponsored by Second
Wind Eco Tours and Yoga in Swansboro..
Many of us have had financial problems in our lives. As with our physical health, it is so easy to mess up our financial
health, but so hugely difficult to fix it. Again, we all know the right answers to this question, but it can be such a struggle to
do the right things. In the next year take a small step toward greater financial health by:
Paying a little bit extra on a debt each month
Teaching your kids about money, credit and debt
Starting an automatic savings plan, such as Carobell’s 401K program
Creating a budget and sticking to it
Spending less on things you “want” and instead of things you “need”
Happy New Year to you all. I hope that this year is safe, happy
and good for you and the ones you love.
Cultural Competence
Mary Butts, Director of Programming
In this edition of the sound wave we will view ways on how we highlight cultural holidays, events and how we pick cultural responsive
materials to share with you. But first we will review our core definitions.
Cultural Competency is: Cultural Competence is an ongoing process, not a destination. It is something that needs to be viewed daily
at work, home and in the community. This helps us to strive for consistency in understanding everyone’s order to continue accomplishing our goal of understanding and implementing Cultural Competency in the workplace and in our daily lives. We need to make every
effort to display diversity through our actions and show awareness in all areas of our lives.
Diversity is: Defined in the dictionary as "the condition of being different. Diversity is beyond race and culture and includes a number
of vast differences such as gender, age, income, religion, beliefs, geographic location etc. Because we all have some similar and different traits; it is important that we know what diversity is and why we should care about it. Valuing diversity recognizes differences between people and acknowledges that these differences are all essential. It emphasizes how having differences in groups of people is
positive and rewarding. We must all value the diversity in everyone by appreciating the differences and similarities that we have, by
developing understanding and knowledge of diversity, and being open to experiences and exploring new endeavors.
Choosing topics in the workplace to share on facts of Cultural competency : We continue to make every effort to recognize the
diversity in everyone’s cultural and still maintain our own valued diversity. Along with the Cultural Competency information you receive
in the Sound Wave, we also have a cultural competency information table in the Vocational Building at the Hubert and Morehead locations. This gives us an opportunity to highlight cultural holidays, events, etc. So how do we pick the right culturally responsive materials? That’s easy! we choose to provide information that will expand knowledge, interest, and develop respect for others who are culturally different. Here are some of the things we try to accomplish when choosing a topic to share with you:
Highlighting Important Facts of Cultural Competency By:

Recognizing various talents and accomplishments when focusing on people.

Consulting with staff who can provide us with cultural information on a certain topic; people experiences can provide
rich resources of hands on knowledge. Seek various representatives to show the diversity within a common group.

Make it more than just about food, music, or popular icons of a culture

Encourage others who may not have "official" holidays representing them or whose families have lived in the U.S. for
multiple generations to explore and share their own heritage and background.

Explore themes that are common to all cultures.

Take interest in others lives outside of the workplace and ask questions about
community events and traditions.

Station Club has been the grateful recipient for charitable donations from the annual Big Rock Blue

YOUR GENEROUSITY MEANS SO MUCH TO US!!
JFG, Inc. keeps Carobell’s computers running at top speed and efficiency. Greg has a talent for
explaining a complicated subject, such as malware, in laymen’s terms.
WHAT IS MALWARE AND HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF?
Malware is a shortened form of “malicious software.” Malware is intended to access and infect
your computer without detection. It includes many types of threats to your computer like spyware, key-loggers, true viruses, worms, and others. Malware is classified as “malware” due to
the intent of the creator to cause harm rather than the features or specific type of code involved.
Malware is a tool used by hackers and organized internet crime. The profit is made through
forced advertising (adware), stealing sensitive information (spyware), distribution of email spam
(zombie computers), or to extort money (ransomware).
Ways Your Computers may be More Vulnerable:
1. If there are defects in the operating system design.
2. If all computers on the same network are running the same OS and settings.
3. When users are given too many permissions and/or weaker security settings.
4. When operating systems or applications are running in outdated versions and missing
security patches that have been released in updates.
A Few Ways to Protect Yourself from Malware:
1. Be cautious of what email attachments you open.
2. Be smart when searching the internet. Sites that are set up just to offer free software, free
programs or other file downloads are far more likely to be malware hosts. If a site looks or
sounds suspicious, stay away from it.
3. Install a good antivirus program and keep it updated.
4. Ask your IT professional to conduct routine system scans and checks. This simple step will
detect any compromises early.
Malware is created at a fast pace – new forms are being released daily. The old saying “an
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true here. It’s better to stay alert and be proactive in preventing a malware infection than to deal with the after-effects of an intrusion.

Mary Robinson
Hab Tech, SR2
Carobell, Inc.
My name is Mary Robinson. I am originally from the Philippines. I am the oldest of four children with two brothers and one sister. My dad works for the government in the Philippines and my mom is in business. I would describe myself as self-driven and motivated, but sensitive. I am always interested in learning and exploring; I also
enjoy reading and shopping. I have my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Misamis University in the
Philippines. After graduation, while visiting my aunt in Japan, I met my husband who is active duty military.
We lived in Japan for two years while he was stationed there and we have a two year old little boy named Gerald. When we came to North Carolina, I saw online that Carobell was hiring. Originally, I thought that Carobell was like a daycare, but I am thankful that I was given an opportunity to look at the person and their potential to achieve when given the support and encouragement in each day of their lives. I do love and enjoy
their genuine gratitude and appreciation, a smile or a hug because you know they mean it. After I pass my nursing exam in the United States, I would like to continue my education to become a nurse anesthetist.

I moved here to the Crystal Coast a little over 10 years ago from northern New
Jersey. I love the warmer weather and beautiful blue seas. This being the main attraction of why I choose to
live in N.C. I have a beautiful family of two grown children, two grandsons and can’t forget the man of my
life….for the past 34 years.
In New Jersey I worked for the Wayne Board of Education specializing in Discrete Trial teaching and Applied
Behavioral analysis for the younger Autistic population. I found this work to be one of the most rewarding and
interesting jobs I ever had, then I found Carobell . This was 10 years ago and I feel that I have truly found my
home here. I love the population we serve and the fact that every day is different and keeps me on my toes.
As a program Instructor for the Candy Bouquet and greeting cards it always brings up something new and challenging for me. Trying to find a less complicated way for someone to wrap wires or attach candy for a bouquet,
letting everyone know they are an artist when it comes to making our greeting cards. I take great stock in ideas

Carobell, Inc. is pleased to announced the newest member of our extended
family…
From Lifeline Canines
We are currently maintaining our programs at Carobell, Brynn Marr Hospital, and Onslow Memorial Hospital. We
are not really growing at the moment, but we feel like the work that we are doing at these 3 facilities is so important. With all of our dogs aging faster than we wish they would, the time was right to add one puppy into training
specifically to be a staff therapy dog for these facilities. We felt like it would be fun to try a different breed – a
smaller breed to complement our current dogs. Carobell was one of our main considerations in this as we felt like
a smaller breed would be able to be picked up and to reach the individuals a little better.
She was the smallest in the litter and also the first to do almost everything! When we met her she just exuded so
much joy, brought joy to our family, and will bring so much joy to those she works with that we felt Joy was a perfect name for her. So, she is Rosalie Joy, and of course we call her “Joy”.
