It certainly hasn’t felt much like spring in Marlborough this week, with reports of the weather reaching 33 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. While I would have loved to have been frolicking in the waves at Whites Bay, I was almost grateful for our air conditioned office when I returned from lunch. The weather forecast this weekend isn’t looking great, with gusty northwesterlies on Saturday and rain on Sunday morning, but if this week’s weather is anything to go by, there’s no doubt Whites Bay will be packed this summer. Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club is teaching beach safety tips to schools around the region for the first time this year. With Marlborough having the highest number of hospitalisations after water-related incidents, it can only be a good thing to learn respect for water at a young age. This is the message from Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club chairman Neil Watts as the region recorded the highest rate of water hospitalisations in the country. ‘‘A lot of people can swim in a pool but once they’re in the ocean it is a different kettle of fish,’’ he says. Five people were hospitalised for drowning in Marlborough last year. This puts the region at 11.5 hospitalisations from incidents in the water per 100,000 people, well above the national average of 4.3 reports. This year would mark the first time where Marlborough schools were taught from the beach at Whites Bay. The club would teach six schools on a variety of beach safety tips from early December. It is important to instil a respect for the water from a young age, says Neil. ‘‘The water does not forgive and sometimes people get out of their depth and do not know where they are. ‘‘School kids can swim well but they might get a wave in the face and panic. ‘‘We’re trying to foster safety Lifeguard patrols have started at Whites Bay, one of Marlborough’s favourite summertime spots. PHOTO: DEREK FLYNN/FAIRFAX NZ and teach them.’’ Three paid guards will be on hand to teach and return to assist patrols over the busy holiday period later in the month. The venture was joint funded by the club and Marlborough District Council. Neil been a member of the club for the past eight years and expected a busy summer season after patrols began again last Saturday. Whites Bay is a largely sheltered beach but could be unpredictable at times with three rescues from the beach last summer, Neil says. ‘‘Sometimes people don’t have respect for the water ... It can turn so quickly within five minutes and a strong southerly.’’ In the past five years, the most common activity causing hospitalisations in Marlborough was swimming. Water Safety New Zealand reported that 60 per cent of Marlborough hospitalisations resulted from water accidents which occurred at a beach or at a pool. Coast Guard Marlborough president Dick Chapman said the emergency service was always ready for action. Almost 30 active volunteers work to service a coastline of 1500km, equal to the entire seaboard of the western United States. Much of the work undertaken by Coast Guard Marlborough related to boat tows and medical evacuation, Chapman said. Mental health workers at the mental health hub on Seymour St are giving away bubble mixture to children and parents who are seeking support for anxiety amid the aftershocks. Supporting Families manager and field worker Lyn Caughley says bubbles are a much more distracting alternative to the traditional method of breathing into a paper bag. ‘‘We have used them before. You’re told to breathe deeply when you’re feeling anxious, and so we started recommending them pretty much straight after the earthquake,’’ Caughley said. The mental health hub has fielded a large increase in calls from parents who are concerned about their children after the earthquake on November 14. Some have panic or asthma attacks while other children struggle to sleep. ‘‘One woman thought her daughter was going to die because she couldn’t breathe,’’ Caughley says. Parents loved the idea of using bubble mixture, and even one adult found it helped with her own post-quake anxiety, she says. ‘‘The best feedback came from her. If you’re having a panic attack, it slows your heart rate down because you’re breathing deeply, so it actually physically improves you. ‘‘But us adults love blowing bubbles anyway.’’ Supporting Families have paid for the bubble mixtures out of their own operating costs, but it was a meagre sum compared to some of the other supports they pay for for clients, Caughley says. ‘‘The cost is so little, but it can make a huge difference. We do keep bottles in the office anyway, but I stocked up on extras after the earthquake, because I thought, well, we’re going to need it.’’ Many people have been walking through the doors of the mental health hub since it opened just three days before the earthquake struck, more than used to visit Supporting Families at its old Scott St office, Caughley says. It was impossible to know if the increase is due to the added burden of post-quake stress, or the ease of walking through the door, she says. ‘‘People are more than welcome to pop in or give us a call.’’ Sophie Hinkley demonstrates how blowing bubbles can affect your mood. PHOTO: DEREK FLYNN/ FAIRFAX NZ Food Bank appeal on Monday PAULA HULBURT A charity which helps those in need is in need of help itself and has appealed to people to give generously. Marlborough Food Bank organisers urgently need to replace vital stocks following the earthquake. While losses through damage were minimal, the charity has been flooded with requests for help, leaving cupboards almost empty. The street appeal will take to the region’s roads on Monday and co-ordinators hope it will be one of the biggest yet. This year’s appeal is a first for new co-ordinator Jo Lane who took over from Bruce and Petrea Barker in September. The mother-of-five says she is confident people will step in to help. ‘‘The people of Marlborough are very generous and supplies are really slim and trim to be honest. The demand following the earthquake means it’s been full steam ahead for us.’’ A team of 200 volunteers will take to the streets alongside emergency service personnel to pick up donations of nonperishable goods. ‘‘Even if it’s just one can, it will make a huge difference once we add all the single cans together. SAVE NEW SEASON $50 ‘‘All it takes is for a mum to get sick or a child, or an event like the earthquake and there’s a huge ripple effect.’’ Lane said anyone who is unable to leave the house can leave donations by their letterbox or drop them into collection boxes available at all the supermarkets. Collections will take place in Blenheim, Picton and Havelock. The street appeal will take place between 6pm and 8pm with sirens blaring to let people know collectors are in the area. Donations and banana boxes can be dropped off at 211 High St, Blenheim. Contact Jo Lane on 027 446 8649 for further information. T he beach is New Zealand’s favourite playground, but it can also be a dangerous place. A fun day out at the beach turned to tragedy for 15 people last summer who drowned at unpatrolled beach locations. National Lifesaving manager Allan Mundy says they cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared. ‘‘Four thousand volunteer lifeguards head out on patrol for the summer season,’’ he says. ‘‘Make sure you choose one of the 80 patrol locations nationwide so that lifeguards can be there for you if you get into trouble.’’ Last year lifeguards saved 1517 people from life-threatening situations and around 85 per cent of those rescues were the result of rips. Rips are caused by complex interactions between the sea and the shape of the shore bed. As waves travel from deep to shallow Neighbourly is a NZ-owned social media site creating easy ways for neighbours to talk and connect. As waves break, they generate currents that flow both along, and away from, the coast. The larger the surf, the stronger the rip current will be. At the shore end of a rip is often a calm deep pool of water ‘‘the Hole’’. It is this calm water that catches more people off guard than any other part of the rip, simply because of the calm deep water; it seems so tranquil, especially when either side of it If you’re heading to the beach this summer, make sure you go to one that’s patrolled by lifeguards. are breaking waves. They are dangerous because when people get into them and can’t touch the bottom, the current will carry them into the rip channel in a matter of minutes to seconds. A lot of people panic when they find themselves caught in one and they tire themselves quickly by trying to fight against it. So what should you do? ❚ Don’t panic! ❚ Lie on your back and let the rip sweep you along until the current weakens. ❚ Stay calm and put your hand up and wave it side to side to attract attention. ❚ When the current has subsided, swim parallel to the shore for 30-40 metres before returning to shore, swimming slowly. ❚ If you spot someone in a rip at an unpatrolled beach, ensure your own safety and call 111 and ask for police. ends ur TVTues o y e z i s p u g i b e & sav all 40˝ - 43˝ all 24˝- 32˝ 1198 $ now SAVE $300 this 49” TV % 20 off HDR, Android TV, 4K X-Reality Pro X1 Processor Also available in 55” Sony 49” Ultra HD HDR Android Smart LED Model: KD-49X7000D 147830 % 47 37999 $ now SAVE $428 this 55” TV i-Dance SAVE $95 Bush 22off ++ Wi-Fi, HDMIx4,USBx3 1517 $ now all 70˝ + % 25 off 30 off % 15 off 20 off 22 off of f the bigger t all 60˝- 69˝ % % % % 10 day he bigger the screen, t he savings all 55˝- 58˝ all 49˝- 50˝ Surf Life Saving New Zealand is an essential rescue service as well as a charity. Since 1910, extraordinary New Zealanders have been volunteering their time to patrol New Zealand’s beaches. Every year, volunteer lifeguards spend more than 200,000 hours keeping a watchful eye on more than 80 beaches throughout the country, helping to make them a safer place for Kiwis and their families to enjoy their summer. Mundy says while swimming between the flags is a well-known message, Surf Life Saving New Zealand also encourages people to adhere to a few simple rules. ‘‘Be prepared, watch out for yourself and others, be aware of the dangers and know your limits. The spring rains have come on the back of a drier than average winter and so have probably recharged the aquifers prior to our long hot summer. The garden should be fairing well with the additional moisture and good growing season. With the extra moisture come the garden pests - flora or fauna - they are sure to be causing you some unwanted work. The weeds are loving the moisture too and extra work is required keeping the lawns in check but it won’t be long, I expect, until the hot dry norwesters start to change the damp to dry and the green to brown. When it is dry the grasses slow down and practically stop growing which can be a blessing but often the weeds do not as they have deeper roots which can access more soil moisture so its time to take to the weeds if you have not already. Another reason for killing the weeds sooner than later is that they will all have flowered by now and so are in the stage of producing seeds which will be spread by the winds far and wide but the bulk of the seeds will stay local and spread throughout your garden. If time is short just lop off any immature seed heads so they can not reach viability. If you have some more time then get the whole weed out - be careful though as ‘‘Landscaping and gardening companies may be a little more expensive but with that small extra cost you get support from the whole team’’ if some seeds are viable you might release them with the vigorous action of removal. If this is the case then put the weed head in a plastic bag to catch any seeds that escape as you remove the weed. As the season gets warmer and drier do remember not to cut your grass too short in risk of damaging it. In summer always keep your grass at least 50mm long. It helps keep it thick to prevent weed competition and to stay greener during dry spells. Early flowering perennials may have finished their first flowering and if you dead head them now you may be enchanted with another late season flowering early in the new year. As the seasons change so does your garden and your lifestyle. Get the garden ready for Christmas now by doing all those tedious maintenance jobs that you have been putting off for a while. If you are overwhelmed then get some help - I am now offering the combined knowledge of my experienced team in assisting the home or business owner with maintaining their property so if you have a beautiful garden that needs a bit of extra help then do get in touch as we may be able schedule regular maintenance for you. There are plenty of really good gardeners in Marlborough, and sadly some not so good, so make sure you choose your helpers with care. The landscaping and gardening companies may be a little more expensive but with that small extra cost you will get support from a whole team and perhaps more importantly a really good job done in a timely manner. The cost of buying and maintaining all your own tools is expensive and you maybe better off by choosing a reputable gardener to assist rather than learning the ropes from scratch and investing in a complete garden tool set up - the deciding factor is often not money but time. The Marlborough District Council urges gardeners to do what they can to reduce water use this summer. * Opt for drought-tolerant plants where possible * Spread 10cm of mulch around trees and flowerbeds in the garden * Use soak hoses under the mulch rather than sprinklers and water wands * Remember lawns need less than 30 minutes watering two or three times a week * Don’t mow lawns too short; leaving grass longer helps slow down evapotranspiration and the lawn will need less irrigation. * Collect rainwater from your roof * Use greywater from the house to water your garden * Water early in the morning or evening, outside the wind and heat of the day * Wash your car or house using a bucket rather than the hose * Check outside taps and pipes for leaks or drips NOVEMBER 26, 2016, THE SATURDAY EXPRESS 9 stuff.co.nz 100-year-old home red-stickered All go for Jules Taylor Triathlon Johanna Lloyd takes the lead in last year’s Jules Taylor Marlborough Women’s Triathlon. There was a massive big crash, and it felt like the whole roof had caved in,’’ Leighann says. During the earthquake, windows shattered and spread glass through the rural homestead, the television and computer smashed on the floor, cabinets fell over, while the family huddled in doorways. The power and the phone lines were down and Leighann and her family clambered outside in the dark. They spent the early hours of November 14 trying to sleep in the car, parked in the yard away from the house and the trees. ‘‘No one slept that night.’’ Leighann, her husband and her three adult children are staying with friends and family as the Upton Downes house, a 45-minute drive west of Seddon, has been red-stickered by building inspectors. ‘‘We came back the next night to feed the animals, and the lounge area had flooded, there was water down the walls, all over the carpet. We had to start moving stuff out. ‘‘And we saw the other chimney was about ready to come down.’’ Her daughter Kayla was back at work at the Cosy Corner Cafe in Seddon on Tuesday, but has returned each evening to feed the animals. She is staying with a co-worker until she finds somewhere else to stay, she says. ‘‘You find the generosity of people in a situation like this. It’s incredible, the goodheartedness that comes out of this,’’ Kayla says. The Jones family has been renting the house for about five years. It was built in the 1800s, but a fire destroyed it near the end of the century and it was rebuilt in 1902, with a coal range, radiators, an old-fashioned bathroom and a wrap-around verandah still existing today. The owner is not going to repair the house, saying it would be too expensive. Leighann is gutted, having spent years building up a garden with flowers and vegetables and planting trees. ‘‘It’s a beautiful old-fashioned house, and it’s what we call home. I don’t know what the criteria are for a heritage building, but it’s such a shame that it will soon be gone.’’ Personal items have been lost, like Leighann’s photo albums ruined by the heavy rain in the days following the earthquake. ‘‘It is actually quite devastating. Everything we had was in there, and most of it is gone. We all feel quite down about it, shocked is probably what I would say. There was a time when all five of us burst out crying. It was like, why us? ‘‘But mother nature does what she does. ‘‘We have no control over it. And as hard as it is, we have to wake up the next day and move on.’’ 10 THE SATURDAY EXPRESS, NOVEMBER 26, 2016 stuff.co.nz stuck for gift ideas? give the gift of choice this christmas 4 weeks til Christmas! hugesavings m t s as i r h c t a e r g for a 20 to % OFF 30 ES & DISHWASHERS N I H C A M G N I H WAS " 65 " 60 R3-131T Vodafone Smart turbo 7 • Dual Core up to 2.16GHz • 11.6" Multi-touch HD LCD • 4GB RAM • HDR10 & Dolby Vision HDR • WEBOS 3.0 Smart • Harman Kardon Sound System • 5MP camera, 2MP selfie camera • 5” touch screen • 1GHz Quad core processor 55 " 49" - WAS $2599.99 NOW $169999 49 " 55" - WAS $3499.99 NOW 9999 $ $199999 60" - WAS $4299.99 SAVE UP TO $ 11.6" LAPTOP UHD SMART 200HZ LED TV NOW 1900 At this price this phone is set up to only work with a Vodafone NZ SIM $259999 65" - WAS $5299.99 NOW SAVE $ $339999 UH770T HALF PRICE on selected $ 110 50% ANDROS Queensize Bed 48999 REGULATE WAS $7099.99 NOW Queensize Bed 354999 $ MULCH & CATCH LAWNMOWER room for the whole family 450 $ 299999 0% SAVE $ 100 INTEREST for 30 months on furniture $999 & over* smithscity.co.nz 249999 $ WAS $299.99 NOW 19999 $ 0% 60 • Briggs & Stratton 450E OHV Engine • Easy Push • Steel Base chassis PORTABLE BBQ ROADTRIP LXE Also available in black. A worse insurance world if I’m honest. Worse, because you now have the burden of responsibility of estimating how much it would cost to rebuild your home. The vast majority of you had a near miss in the recent Kaikoura and North Canterbury earthquakes. Use the reprieve wisely. Go shake the dust off your home and contents policy and consider if you would have survived this quake financially, should the worst have happened. EIGHTY-FIVE PER CENT OF HOMES ARE UNDER-INSURED Only three months ago the Government’s own Treasury department ran a scenario of a 7.5 earthquake hitting Wellington. They estimated 85 per cent of homes were under-insured by as much as 28 per cent. That’s over a quarter of their value. They weren’t too worried, because 95 per cent of people don’t suffer a full loss and can meet repair costs with the insurance cover they have. Governments specialise in the helicopter view, but as an individual you can’t. In Canterbury, both my main home and holiday home were a full loss. I didn’t make it into the 95 per cent bucket – twice. While those of us who have lived through five years of insurance hell will belch forth with our woes, we often forget we had gold-plated full replacement policies; you don’t. If our land turned to jelly and our new home needed 20 metre piles, the insurers coughed up, regardless of cost. If our 30-yearold kitchen cupboards cracked, our new ones now look like they’re fresh from the pages of House & Garden. If our cladding system was out-of-date and new building methods demanded a new more expensive solution – no skin off our nose. As Cantabrians know, the reality of a full replacement policy wasn’t always peachy. About a month ago, I settled with my insurer, five years after the event and incurring $80,000 in costs such as engineering and quantity surveys to aid the negotiation. Writing the words ‘‘gold-plated insurance policy’’ makes me wince. But standing back from it and reflecting on the outcome of a sum-insured world, I’m grateful for what we had. THE OPEN CHEQUEBOOK CLOSED Insurers were faced with the commercial reality of an open GET IN TOUCH ONLINE Janine Starks chequebook. It rattled them and it’s no wonder they now want to cap their liability with a fixed amount on the policy. In future, liquefied land will probably be deserted, as homeowners won’t have the funds in their payout for expensive foundation solutions. In the Canterbury experience, while large pockets were red-zoned and paid for by EQC, thousands of people are still living on what’s known as ‘‘TC3 land’’. Rebuilds require foundation costs that a sum-insured policy cannot possibly anticipate or respond to. If you’re thinking ‘she’ll be right’, we’ll just have to add a bit to the mortgage, pause for thought. A member of my family had new foundations priced up at $200,000 in the Christchurch suburb of Parklands. This was for a single level, three-bedroom home. EQC won’t pay out for this, but the old-style full replacement policy responded to the situation. Under the suminsured regime, how will the average New Zealander pick up a bill like that? Right now we’re in an insurance freeze. Sum insured policy limits cannot be changed. So if the dollar value you dusted off is worrying you, nothing can be done about it just yet. Don’t throw your arms in the air in despair. Use the time to figure out what your home would cost to rebuild. Insurers will defrost in the coming months and limits can be changed at that point. The website need2know.org.nz provides a good calculator. Full quantity surveys cost in the region of $3000 to $7000 and are well worth it for those who own unusual properties, such as character homes, hill homes, or bespoke designs. For all of us, this is a timely reminder to: 1. Inflation adjust your sum insured policy if your insurer hasn’t. 2. Photograph as much of your home as you can. Insurers have a fetish for considering ‘preexisting’ damage. Close-ups of foundations, retaining walls, driveways and paths can be handy. 3. Old sum-insured policies (common on rentals or family baches) can be wildly out-of-date. 4. Check expensive items are on your contents policy if they need listing e.g. a new artwork purchase or an expensive bike. 5. Check what your loss-ofincome cover is on any rental property you own. 6. Don’t miss any deadlines when rolling over a policy each year. 7. Quakes kill. If you have a young family and mortgage, revisit your life insurance cover. 8. Brace yourself, premiums will rise again. Dress as Santa and run for a good claus JEFFREY KITT It might look like a Santa bootcamp on the banks of the Taylor River, but at least it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Well, maybe a leg. This year marks the first time Marlborough hosts its own edition of the Great KidsCan Santa Run. The premise is simple, applicants either walk or run a 2km or 3km circuit dressed as the jolly man himself. Blenheim police are on board and challenging community groups around the region to sign up and run for a reason this season. Community constable Russ Smith has thrown down the gauntlet in festive cheer. ‘‘The police are on board and we’re determined,’’ he said. ‘‘We challenge the firies to do the same,’’ he said. It is an ideal event to celebrate Christmas in the December leadup and make a charitable effort in the process, he said. The proceeds go towards KidsCan to assist in meeting the physical and nutritional needs of Kiwi kids less fortunate than others. Youth Aid constable Dean Buckley said he could not wait to take part in the run. ‘‘Yes it’s fun, but it’s money going to a good cause,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s all for the children. ‘‘I want everyone to come along and work to raise money for those less fortunate.’’ ALTECH CAR CLINIC Marlborough Youth Trust youth development co-ordinator Jodye Tomalin said it would be a fun event for all ages. ‘‘We really hope that a lot of people will like this event,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s quirky and it’s not a big run, people don’t even have to run if they don’t want to.’’ It is important that events like this offer a variety of things for young people of Marlborough to take part in, Jodye said. The run will begin at the Monro Street entrance of the Taylor River in Blenheim. Santa attire is included in the registration fee with the full costume to feature a top, hat, belt, beard and pants or a skirt or dress. ‘‘People get Christmas paraphernalia as part of the entry fee, why wouldn’t you join in?’’ Russ said. The event will be held on December 7 from 6.30pm. NOVEMBER 26, 2016, THE SATURDAY EXPRESS 19 stuff.co.nz Tree of memories PAULA HULBURT Dancer Elly Molloy as fairy queen Titania. PHOTO: ELENA MCPHEE Dancers end year on magical note ELENA MCPHEE An enchanting cast of dancers and actors will soon be flocking to the stage, for a unique end-of-year production. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based on the Shakespeare play, is coming to the ASB Theatre in Blenheim on December 3 and 4. The magical tale of transformation is being performed by DANCE on grove dance school, and the Marlborough Children’s and Youth Theatre. Dance teacher Jeannie Mark says in total there will be about 140 dancers and 80 actors on the stage. The dancers will perform the fairytale sequence of the story, when the main characters are lost in a forest, while the actors from the Children’s and Youth Theatre will perform the parts of starcrossed lovers Helena, Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius, and the rest of the human cast. Jeannie and theatre stalwart Duncan Whiting are directing the production. The dancers’ roles are completely non-speaking, Jeannie says. ‘‘I’ve never seen a ballet and a play done together. It’s going to be interesting.’’ The story will look spectacular on stage, with the set specially designed, and it is also very funny, Jeannie says. Dancer and DANCE on grove dance teacher Elly Molloy will take the role of fairy queen Titania, while young dancer Moana Jackson takes the role of fairy Puck. Elly says teaching pupils and dancing in the production has been challenging, but rewarding. Juggling them with performing in another recent production The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, has made for a busy time, she says. Now 19-years-old, she has been performing in Jeannie’s dance productions since she was 6. BODY She began teaching alongside her former dance teacher after leaving Marlborough Girls’ College last year. Jeannie says Dave Barrett will take the role of fairy king Oberon, while Shiloh Walsh is Bottom, the weaver who is given the head of a donkey. The actors and dancers have been rehearsing separately, but they will begin practicing together in the theatre next week. The show is at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim on December 3 at 6.30pm and December 4 at 4pm. Bookings through TicketDirect. The Remembrance Tree is again gracing the Farmers store in Blenheim. And special handpainted baubles are also for sale at the store in a bid to raise as much money as possible for Hospice Marlborough. The Blenheim store is one of 61 around the country taking part in the Caring Connections in our Community campaign. The campaign has been designed to reflect the community-based nature of hospice services and the sense of connection Farmers has in the community. For a donation, members of the public can write a personal message in memory of someone they have lost or to family members they may be missing, especially those they are apart from over the festive season. Hospice Marlborough chief executive Jude Dellebeke said the organisation welcomed the tree as it helped keep hospice services free to those who needed them. ‘‘All funds raised in Marlborough will remain in our community to support Hospice Marlborough,’’ Jude says. ‘‘It enables us to keep our services free of charge to everyone who needs us.’’ Hospice Marlborough offers a range of services to anyone with a life limiting condition. As an essential health service provider, hospice services receive some government funding but financial support from the community is essential to meet the shortfall. Last year, the campaign raised $19,389 for Hospice Marlborough. The Remembrance Tree campaign will be available in store until Christmas Eve. 30,495 30 30,4 4 00 $ Bowen Therapist Dip Prof (NZ) ENQUIRE ENQUIR RE TODAY AND SEE WHAT ALL THE CX-3 FUSS IS ABOUT! Incendies (2010) came close as dammit. Prisoners (2013) started strong, but twisted when it should have stuck. Enemy (2013) was far too esoteric (read pretentious). And Sicario (2015) was superbly crafted, but just shy of worldshaking. For its first 30 minutes, this cerebral sci-fi, adapted by Eric (Lights Out) Heisserer from Ted Chiang’s Story Of Your Life, appears to be the answer. In fact, the opening montage, which delicately frames our hero – linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – in domestic tragedy, might be the most moving since Up. Recalling Terence Malick in their painterly intensity, they’re so powerful they cast a sad shadow over what follows. As in Gravity, you can’t help feeling Banks would positively welcome an apocalypse. But that’s not what happens. One day, announced by the anxious beep of her students’ cellphones, 12 alien vessels land at strategic points around the globe, and Forest Whitaker’s nononsense Colonel Weber asks Banks, along with scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), to establish if these visitors really do come in peace. At this point, the anticipation is tangible – thrilling, even – and there are moments of tactile Review Arrival (M) Directed by Dennis Villeneuve Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Runner, Forest Whitaker 116 mins ★★★★ Amy Adams is superb as linguist Louise Banks in the sci-fi drama Arrival. tenderness, such as when Banks traces her finger along the bottom of the spacecraft, or our first glimpse of the aliens (recalling Gareth Edwards’ Monsters) appearing through fog. It’s beautiful, but the tension between what’s happening on the world stage, and within the characters, is poorly maintained in the stumbling second act. It’s a pity, because throughout Johan Johannsson’s sonorous score is lovely; the performers spot on; and the philosophical concerns deep enough to confuse Christopher Nolan. JUST SAY NO It is time to put less pressure on yourself in all aspects of your life. So often our own expectations or pressure can cause us to burn the candle at both ends. Don’t be afraid to say no to commitments CRYPTIC when they’re the last thing you feel like. Only you can take care of your health and happiness and often learning to say no is the best place to start. Use the time you gained to do something you love – go for a walk, practise some yoga moves or simply curl up on the couch with a good book – you will feel so much better for it. COMMIT TO A MORNING ROUTINE If your days are getting more and more jam-packed starting your day with a restorative routine can make all the difference to help your mindset and allow you to start your day with a feeling of spaciousness. You can make your own nut milks using soaked almonds or cashews or coconuts, or you can generally purchase rice, oat, almond, even hazelnut or macadamia milk. I have found that most people find rice milk similar in taste and consistency to trim milk. If buying a milk alternative, check the label for added sweeteners and avoid those. A word that will typically appear on the label if an additional sweetener has been used is ‘maltodextrin’. It can be good to mix up the types of milk alternatives you use, choosing a different one each month, for example. ❚ Dr Libby is a nutritional biochemist, best-selling author and speaker. Paul has pencilled in the Istanbul marathon, and Round Lake Taupo cycle ride next year to keep his motivation primed. ‘‘I’ve got an urge to run in Istanbul where the event is held over two continents, Europe and Asia,’’ Paul says. ‘‘It’s a lovely course spanning both sides of the Bosphorus River.’’ The Blenheim groundsman returned home this week after 11 days in Athens, Istanbul and Dubai. He has mixed feelings after completing his 100th marathon at the home of the 42km event. He lined up at the start line at Marathon with 18,000 other runners, 2000 of whom didn’t complete the distance. ‘‘I finished in 5 hours and 3 minutes, it wasn’t my slowest by a long way but under the circumstances I was happy with the time,’’ he says. ‘‘The course was really tough and I struggled with the 22km of hills, and the heat.’’ The route from Marathon to Athens was devoid of any interesting historical viewpoints, he says. ‘‘We ran on the asphalt all the Paul Knight has completed his 100th marathon in Athens, Greece PHOTO: SCOTT HAMMOND/FAIRFAX NZ way which was hard, and once we got out of Marathon there was little else but trees, goats and small farm holdings until we got near Athens. ‘‘However running into the Olympic Stadium was awesome and very impressive. I almost felt like one of those marathoners from ancient Greece.’’ Paul says while he also enjoyed sightseeing and cruising to the islands while in Athens he is unsure he would come back to run another marathon. ‘‘It’s a very safe city, the food is delicious, especially the seafood, and the historic sights are inspiring.’’ But a few days spent in Istanbul recuperating had motivated him to enter the city’s marathon event in 2017. ‘‘I won’t be running any events before Christmas, but I will keep in tune with some cycling to prepare for the 160km Round Lake Taupo cycle event in November next year ... There’s unfinished business there after I was three minutes out from breaking the five-hour mark last time.’’ MCKENDRY FORD HOT DEALS 2009 HONDA JAZZ 1.5 SPORT 2014 TERRITORY TITANIUM V6 DIESEL AWD 2013 CHRYSLER 300 LTD SEDAN Alloy Wheels, Fog Lights, Sports Seats and Body Kit, Cruise Control, Electric Windows and Door Mirrors, Front and Side Air Bags, Safe and Economical, Alarm, Easy Access 6 Speed Auto / Tiptronic selector, 7 Leather Seats, Alloy wheels, Rear View Camera, Satellite Navigation, Tow Bar, Only 57,700Km’s V6 3.5L Petrol, Smooth and Economical 9.4L /100Km, 20” Alloy Wheels, Day Light Running Lights, Drivers Knee Air Bag, Cruise Control, Push Button Start, Less than 10,000Km’s. $10,990 $ 42,990 $35,990 2012 FORD RANGER XLT 4X4 6 SPEED AUTO 2016 FORD EVEREST TITANIUM 3.2 TURBO DIESEL LATE 2015 FORD FOCUS TREND 2.0L AUTO Chrome Sports Bar, Factory Tow Bar, Parking Sensors, Colour Coded Hard Lid, Bonnet Guard, Slim Line Monsoons, All Terrain Tyres, Credit To Previous Owner, Low Km’s.
