has changed him profoundly. “My soul has grown deep like the rivers”, he says. Dear Friends, I recently read the first poem written by Langston Hughes, one of the most prominent poets of the 20th century. It goes like this: I have known rivers. I have known rivers as ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins. My soul has grown deep like the rivers. I bathed in the Congo, in the Euphrates, when dawns were new. I built my hut on the Congo and it lulled me to sleep. I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it. I heard the Mississippi when Abraham Lincoln went down to New Orleans. And I watched its bloody bosom turn golden in the sunset. I have known rivers, ancient and dusky rivers, and my soul has grown deep like the rivers. The beauty of poetry is that it enables us to express in images truths that we can’t capture in a literal use of words. Let’s listen to these images of Langston Hughes to hear what he’s telling us. Rivers are the places where people set up their homes and create their towns and cities. Rivers, unlike mountains, don’t divide people; they unite them. The rivers that Hughes writes about are among the major bodies of water in the world. Great civilizations have been identified with some of them and all of them have been sources of transportation and places of commerce. When Langston Hughes tells us that he has “known” these rivers he is telling us that he has identified himself with the people, the history, and those parts of nature that have fed this history. In other words, he knows them from within himself, not simply as objects to be observed. The significance of this knowledge is that it What happened to Langston Hughes was that he discovered that there was a deeper unity among peoples than the political, geographical, ethnic, racial, or sexual differences so often emphasized today. He discovered the unity about which St. Paul writes in Galatians: “In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female”. This unity transcends space and time so he could write about “knowing:” rivers and peoples from far distant places and periods of history. He found in himself a communion of spirit that brought him into touch with all of creation and with the Source of all that is. This has happened to us, but we often overlook it. It’s the effect of the outpouring of the Spirit, of Pentecost. It’s what it means to be a part of the Church. For many earlier generations, the experience of belonging to the Church was the experience of sharing certain beliefs and practices like going to Mass on Sundays and not eating meat on Fridays. Oddly enough, this way of being Catholic meant identifying with those things that separated us from others. While they have their place, they’re only part of the experience of belonging to the Church. The deepest part is the communion of the Spirit that Langston Hughes also discovered. Racially, he was black. Yet, he recognized the humanity he shared with people of all races. Our society sorely needs examples of communities that struggle to work out life in light of this communion of the Spirit. When we make our differences too important, we can miss the effects of the presence of Christ’s healing Spirit. That Spirit helps us to honestly and patiently respect differences among people. It also encourages us to prayerfully and creatively discover solutions that meet the needs raised by them. That’s the mission of the Church. That’s what Pentecost celebrates. Love Fr. Joe Worship…Called and formed by the Word of God, we worship our Lord primarily in the Mass. The Eucharist is the center of our Christian life. It grounds everything else we do, from prayer to our daily tasks to our ministries. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council Representatives: Fr. We are once again accepting orders for pavers that will be placed in either of TWO locations. You can purchase a paver to be laid in the Meditation Garden to the right of the church OR a paver to appear near the gym doors of Saint Anne School. Forms are available at the rectory. BACK TO OUR ROOTS WILL MEET THIS THURSDAY, MAY 28th IN THE CORNERSTONE ROOM!! Come discuss Sunday’s Gospel!! MEDITATION At the River Clarion, by Mary Oliver I don’t know who God is exactly. But I’ll tell you this. I was sitting in the river named Clarion, on a water splashed stone and all afternoon I listened to the voices of the river talking. Whenever the water struck a stone it had something to say, and the water itself, and even the mosses trailing under the water. And slowly, very slowly, it became clear to me what they were saying. Said the river I am part of holiness. And I too, said the stone. And I too, whispered the moss beneath the water. I’d been to the river before, a few times. Don’t blame the river that nothing happened quickly. You don’t hear such voices in an hour or a day. You don’t hear them at all if selfhood has stuffed your ears. And it’s difficult to hear anything anyway, through all the traffic, the ambition. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Pentecost Sunday “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” – 1Corinthians 12:4-6 By giving each of us different gifts, God made sure that the Church would have the right combination of time, talent and treasure that was needed to do his work. However, if one of us does not utilize our gifts, God’s plan goes unfulfilled. Some important work is left undone. Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever more truly the People of God.
