Fr. Joe - Clover website

has changed him profoundly. “My soul has grown deep
like the rivers”, he says.
Dear Friends,
I recently read the first poem written by Langston
Hughes, one of the most prominent poets of the 20th
century. It goes like this:
I have known rivers.
I have known rivers as ancient as the world and
older than the flow of human blood in human
veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Congo, in the Euphrates, when
dawns were new.
I built my hut on the Congo and it lulled me to
sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids
above it.
I heard the Mississippi when Abraham Lincoln
went down to New Orleans.
And I watched its bloody bosom turn golden in
the sunset.
I have known rivers, ancient and dusky rivers,
and my soul has grown deep like the rivers.
The beauty of poetry is that it enables us to express in
images truths that we can’t capture in a literal use of
words. Let’s listen to these images of Langston Hughes
to hear what he’s telling us. Rivers are the places where
people set up their homes and create their towns and
cities. Rivers, unlike mountains, don’t divide people;
they unite them. The rivers that Hughes writes about
are among the major bodies of water in the world.
Great civilizations have been identified with some of
them and all of them have been sources of
transportation and places of commerce.
When Langston Hughes tells us that he has “known”
these rivers he is telling us that he has identified himself
with the people, the history, and those parts of nature
that have fed this history. In other words, he knows
them from within himself, not simply as objects to be
observed. The significance of this knowledge is that it
What happened to Langston Hughes was that he
discovered that there was a deeper unity among
peoples than the political, geographical, ethnic, racial,
or sexual differences so often emphasized today. He
discovered the unity about which St. Paul writes in
Galatians: “In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek,
neither slave nor free, neither male nor female”.
This unity transcends space and time so he could write
about “knowing:” rivers and peoples from far distant
places and periods of history. He found in himself a
communion of spirit that brought him into touch with
all of creation and with the Source of all that is.
This has happened to us, but we often overlook it. It’s
the effect of the outpouring of the Spirit, of Pentecost.
It’s what it means to be a part of the Church. For many
earlier generations, the experience of belonging to the
Church was the experience of sharing certain beliefs
and practices like going to Mass on Sundays and not
eating meat on Fridays.
Oddly enough, this way of being Catholic meant
identifying with those things that separated us from
others. While they have their place, they’re only part of
the experience of belonging to the Church. The deepest
part is the communion of the Spirit that Langston
Hughes also discovered. Racially, he was black. Yet, he
recognized the humanity he shared with people of all
races.
Our society sorely needs examples of communities that
struggle to work out life in light of this communion of
the Spirit. When we make our differences too
important, we can miss the effects of the presence of
Christ’s healing Spirit. That Spirit helps us to honestly
and patiently respect differences among people. It also
encourages us to prayerfully and creatively discover
solutions that meet the needs raised by them. That’s
the mission of the Church. That’s what Pentecost
celebrates.
Love
Fr. Joe

MEDITATION
At the River Clarion, by Mary Oliver
I don’t know who God is exactly.
But I’ll tell you this.
I was sitting in the river named Clarion, on a water
splashed stone
and all afternoon I listened to the voices of the river
talking.
Whenever the water struck a stone it had something
to say,
and the water itself, and even the mosses trailing
under the water.
And slowly, very slowly, it became clear to me
what they were saying.
Said the river I am part of holiness.
And I too, said the stone. And I too, whispered the
moss beneath the water.
I’d been to the river before, a few times.
Don’t blame the river that nothing happened
quickly.
You don’t hear such voices in an hour or a day.
You don’t hear them at all if selfhood has stuffed
your ears.
And it’s difficult to hear anything anyway, through
all the traffic, the ambition.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
Pentecost Sunday
“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts
but the same Spirit; there are different forms
of service but the same Lord; there are
different workings but the same God who
produces all of them in everyone.”
– 1Corinthians 12:4-6
By giving each of us different gifts, God
made sure that the Church would have the
right combination of time, talent and
treasure that was needed to do his work.
However, if one of us does not utilize our
gifts, God’s plan goes unfulfilled. Some
important work is left undone.
Word…
St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the
Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we
become ever more truly the People of God.

along with other fees and donations totaled $20,102.00.
Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.
Heating & Air Conditioning ~
Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is
higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of
paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate
ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or
two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the
collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will
simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass.
Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a
difference!!!
Online Giving…
You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online!
To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org
There are several ways to access the system:
1.
Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a
light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.
OR
2.
From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says
“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select
the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.
Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see
New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”
When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods.
Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your
routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There
you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You
can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you
would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.
Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection
when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
