Eastern York School District Knights Knews Summer 2012 STRING DAY FOR EASTERN STUDENTS On Saturday, March 31st, approximately 75 orchestra students from Eastern’s elementary, middle, and high schools came together for the district’s third annual String Day. The event was held at the High School in the Performing Arts Center. String Day was created by both Miss Amanda Fortney and Miss Rebecca Duane to musically enrich the lives of the students that play string instruments in the Eastern York School District. It is a fun-filled day of games, learning, and of course music making! String Day typically begins with a game that allows the students to mingle with each other. This year the students participated in a scavenger hunt where they learned many facts about music, orchestra instruments, and performing venues. Many of the elementary students said this was their favorite part of String Day. One of the most memorable moments of the day comes from watching the high school and middle school students mentor the elementary students in the district. Each year the event grows in size. More and more of the older students remember how much the event meant to them when they were younger and wish to share the day with the younger string players in the district. They act as leaders during the rehearsals throughout the day and pique the interest of the beginning students with their advanced skills. WRIGHTSVILLE JUMPS ROPE FOR HEART In February, Wrightsville Elementary participated in ‘Jump Rope For Heart’. This event was held to help benefit the American Heart Assoc. The AHA raises money to help fight some of the leading causes of death in the US such as heart disease, stroke & diabetes. Each grade participated for 90 minutes of activity including jumping rope, hula hoops or long ropes. We are proud to say Wrightsville students & staff raised a total of $3,462.99. Brock Bolton & Natalie Scriber were the top fundraisers, raising $150.00 each. AWESOME JOB WRIGHTSVILLE!!! String Day culminates with a short afternoon concert. Each orchestra, elementary, middle, and high school, performs a piece on their own and then all students combine forces to perform a piece together. The students love the big, mature sound the combined piece produces! The concert is free and open to the public. Look for next year’s String Day to be held near the end of March 2013. We’d love to have you join us. 8th Graders Re-enact Boston Massacre Trial from 1770. Students in Ms. Townsley and Mr. Marcini’s 8th grade American Foundations classes re-enacted the Boston Massacre Trial from 1770. The students were able to walk in the shoes of people that lived in Colonial America by taking on the role of an attorney, judge, witness, or juror. The students worked very hard to prove whether the events of March 5, 1770 were an act of self-defense on the part of the British soldiers or an act of murder. The students were allowed to change history and the fate of each soldier by proving their guilt or innocence. Many Exhibits were entered into evidence such as two drawings by Paul Revere, a picture of the soldier’s rifles, snowballs, wooden clubs, and a 10 pound weight used to show how heavy the Brown Bess, the so-called murder weapon was. Many of the British soldiers in our re-enactment had their lives spared due to excellent witness testimony and the help of their prepared and relentless defense attorneys proving reasonable doubt. However, some were not so fortunate because the well qualified prosecuting attorneys used the evidence and their witness testimonies to prove guilt. The high school metal manufacturing students under the guidance of Mr. Michael Ober recently completed a manufacturing unit by producing “yard art” Bumblebees. Each semester Mr. Ober's students become involved with designing and building a prototype of some marketable metal product. The advanced Metal Manufacturing III class was responsible for designing and constructing the jigs and fixtures necessary for producing multiple identical parts. The results were an overwhelming success. This semesters production began on April 2nd. After 3,528 metal parts were fabricated and 2,352 welding joints were completed, 196 completed Bumblebees graced the metalworking storage area. This manufacturing unit is an integral part of each students metal manufacturing experience. The objectives were as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To give the students a realistic understanding of the planning, production, quality control and retail sales necessary within a manufacturing company. To allow the students the opportunity to become involved with various equipment and manufacturing processes. To provide the students with the experience of performing a repetitive process for a period of time. To develop a "team concept" whereby each student is working for a common goal. To raise funds in order to take a field trip with the purpose of touring several large metal manufacturing facilities. Throughout the years, through the funds raised with these manufacturing units, students in Mr. Ober's metal manufacturing classes have had the opportunity to tour many large companies. These plant tours have served to provide the students with a realistic view of many of the machines and processes studied in class. This semester on May 3rd, the metal manufacturing classes for the spring semester spent a full day traveling to three industrial facilities including METSO Minerals, York Corrugating and Billet Industries all which were located in York. All students were treated to lunch at CiCi’s Pizza Buffet. The many high school metal manufacturing students involved with this project are commended for their excellent cooperation and hours of consistently hard work. Students involved in this project included: Trey Barnett Dylen Bitonti Charles Bixler Ryan Bortner Ian Deitz Taylor Begley Jared Dietz Scott Elliot Zach Fritz Colton Groff Corey Hauck Logan Herrick Melissa Ingersoll Lee Irvin Maitece King Stephen Kowalski Adam Gockley David Livelsberger David Livelsberger Patrick Lizott Carl Lizotte McLaskey Mason Mason Mclasky Jessica Jessica PatrickPatrick Nolan Nolan Smith Smith Jacob Jacob Miller Miller Bremmen Morgan Bremmen Morgan Justin Nedimyer Justin Nedimyer Brandon Overmiller Brandon Overmiller Austin Wherley Austin Wherley Keith Bryan Keith Bryan Saige Dellen Saige Dellen Justin Dempsey Justin Dempsey Godsborough Adam Kole Gockley James Guiseppe Kole Goldsborough Gockley James Adam Guiseppe Chance Sultzbach Thomas Taylor Alan Tyson Austin Wheeland Greg Winemiller Caleb Hertzler Buck Kauffman Tyler Kessler Kyle Leiphart Austin Miller Austin Snyder Kamron Stover Nick Warner Spenser Yost Continuing the tradition that retired teacher, Mary Dunlap, started over 20 years ago, Kreutz Creek Kindergarteners in Beth Taylor’s class were surprised to see "Accomac Jack" on Groundhog’s Day.
