interpretations of the Crusades (bloodthirsty treasure-seekers,
religious idealists, or fundamentalist terrorists?). The historical
context in Europe and the Middle East is considered. As a class we
discuss what motivated the Crusades? Discuss who went on the
Crusades (including women and children). Evaluate how to define
the Crusades. Consider how many Crusades there were. what the
Crusades actually achieved or didn’t achieve. How they were
perceived and resisted as invasions by Muslims. We also discuss
the destruction they wrought on Jews and Christians. Finally we
discuss what their legacy both positive and negative has been to
the modern world.
Who were the Crusaders.
Who were the Crusaders and what were the Crusades? From 1095,
when Pope Urban II toured France urging Christian knights to make
pilgrimage to the Holy Land and liberate Jerusalem. Until the fall of
Malta to Napoleon in 1798, the idea of Crusade had profound impact
on the history of Europe and the Middle East. The endurance of the
term “Crusade” and its legacies into the modern era just serve to
emphasise the lasting influence of these military pilgrimages.
In the Classroom
We will read some of the contemporary accounts from both sides
and probe the lives of some of the famous figures of the Crusades.
People such as Salah al-Din (Saladin), Richard-the Lion Heart,
Baldwin, and ordinary people including Muslims, Orthodox
Christians, and Western Christians who tried to make a life in the
kingdoms established by the Crusades in the Middle East. The
literature on the Crusades, both contemporary and scholarly, is
extensive. This class will endeavour to consider and discuss the role
