Macquarie University Scholarships CAREERS ADVISERS DAY 5 MAY 2017 Why do we offer scholarships? Support students Reward students Encourage students Our scholarships recognise academic merit while understanding that some students may need financial and other support to assist in their success because of their personal circumstances. The University has a dedicated Scholarships and Prizes Unit to assist students with this support and to provide scholarship recipients with links to other services. And to attract students to study here! COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 2 Scholarship Timeline August 2017 - Scholarship applications to open (by Open Day 19 August 2017) 22 December 2017- first offer round (applications must be complete by 1 December 2017 to be considered in this round). Early January 2018 – most scholarship applications to close Early February 2018 - all students to be notified of the outcome of their scholarship application. This year we will be making more offers in conjunction with the new December round offers just after ATAR’s are released. The most important take away from today is that students should be applying for scholarships at the same time as they are applying for admissions. Each year applicants wait to apply for scholarships until after they get an admissions offer- in most cases this is too late for scholarship consideration. If I was working that much where would the study come in?” “I'm married, and we were discussing it and it was definitely a big leap towards coming here, having the extra money coming in.” COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 8 You indicated earlier that your scholarship has impacted on your capacity to spend time studying and do academic work. Approximately how many more hours per week has your scholarship allowed you to spend on studying and academic work than would have otherwise been the case? 23% 21% 17% 13% 11% 8% 0% 0 hours per week 1-5 6-10 COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 11-15 16-20 21-25 3% 4% 26-30 Over 30 hours per week Unsure 9 Success “If I didn’t have the money I probably would have dropped out to be honest because I would be sitting there in a lecture thinking I cannot afford to be here, there is no safety net. So yeah it has really helped me at uni.” “Part of my scholarship is being able to live at Dunmore Lang College. And the academic support that they offer is awesome, so without that my grades Would be much worse. I don’t think my GPA would be anywhere as good as it is now.” COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 10 Retention: Equity Scholarship Holder vs Non Equity Scholarship Holder Equity Scholarship recipients (n=698) Non Equity Scholarship students (n=58,339) 100% 95% 94.1% 92.8% 90.6% 89.5% 90% 88.3% 85.9% 85% 84.4% 83.7% 82.7% 84.1% 80% 75% 70% 65% 60% 2009 COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 2010 2011 2012 All years 11 Merit Scholarship Recipient Research Findings 2016 Measured Impacts • 32 (69.57%) said receiving the scholarship impacted their decision to come to Macquarie. • 27 (58.69%) said they would have attended another university if they had not received the scholarship. • Most (73.9%) felt the scholarship helped motivate them to do well at University. • Most (71.74%) said they could devote more time to academic work because of the scholarship. • A large majority (86.96%) belong/belonged to a University club or society. • A majority (82.6%) either agreed, or strongly agreed, that the scholarship gave them a level of independence they would not have had otherwise. COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 22 Application Pointers What makes a good scholarship application? We received over 1500 scholarship applications for first session 2016. Of course, different schemes look for different students based on different criteria but some aspects of scholarship applications are universal. It is important to read through the selection criteria to ensure you are clear on what is being asked. If you have any questions, please give us a call! We would rather talk with you (or a student) prior to submission to ensure that everything is ready to go. COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZE UNIT 24 Six categories of scholarship questions/criteria • Academic Performance; • Activities within your school; • Activities outside the school within your community; • Financial need or other disadvantage; • Personal statement/letter; and/or • Letters of recommendation COURSEOWRK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZE UNIT 25 Academic Performance – this is not the be all and end all for some schemes. However, there are some scholarship schemes out there that only require academic performance. Activities within your school Activities outside the school within your communityListing a wide array of extracurricular activities will help your general applications stand out, and some of them may also give you an edge when it comes to specific athletic- or activity-based scholarships. Financial need or other disadvantage- Our equity scholarships are assessed through a common application process through UAC. It is similar to the Educational Access Scheme and relies on information provided from professional that are providing the student support. COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 26 Personal Statement Here are 4 tips that you can relay to your students: • Make sure you know your audience; • Plan far in advance- don’t start the day before; • Make it personal and passionate; and • Find an editor. COURSEWORK SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES UNIT 27 Letter of Recommendation A strong letter of reference will be: • Succinct; and • Give insight to the student beyond the numbers- family life, life outside of the classroom, obstacles that the student may have overcome.
