What are “In-song Solos” and “Specials”?

What are “In-song Solos” and “Specials”?
Both MUST be auditioned*--early March for in-song solos; mid- to late April for Specials.
Both in-song solos and specials will be selected by considering
voice
appropriateness to the character of the show
how well the voices blend
as well as other considerations such as
attendance
willingness to work with the group as a team player
work ethic
attitude
IN-SONG SOLOS:
 Some songs will have one or more solos. Some songs will have no solos at all.
 The sheet music may have solos marked. These are solos suggested by the publisher—they will not
necessarily be the solos that HeatWave directors will select for this year.
 Some solos may be for one person to sing by himself or herself; some may be sung as duets, trios, or
quartets.
 Some solos are marked in the sheet music as for either male or female. HeatWave directors may
choose to change this.
 Some solos marked in the sheet music are lengthy; HeatWave directors may keep them that way or
may break them into smaller segments.
 Some solos are spoken and not sung this year.
SPECIALS:
 Special pieces are songs that are not a part of the regular program.
 They may or may not be performed each time HeatWave performs.
 These are songs for which you find the music and accompaniment on your own. Please note: There
must be NO background vocals on your accompaniment.
 Keep in mind that stage presence is important for Specials. Developing choreography to go along with
your singing will make your piece more appealing.
 Individuals, duets, or other small groups can perform specials, with particular consideration given to
duets or small groups.
 Not every piece that is auditioned will be chosen.
Specials are an opportunity to spread your wings and try something out of the ordinary.
Even if your piece is not chosen for the show,
the experience of selecting, choreographing, learning parts on your own,
and learning to work with others in a creative and cooperative way is priceless.
Everyone in HeatWave is encouraged to try for a “special”.
*Keep this in mind:
