Layers of the Forest Project
Layers of the Temperate Rainforest Project You will be creating a project that will display your knowledge of the layers in a
temperate rainforest. The project will be due on _______________. Use the attached pieces
of paper to take notes from the internet or books and use the card stock provided to complete
your project. The temperate forest can be sectioned into more than 3 layers, but we are going
to focus on 3 distinct layers. There are also many different names for the layers. We will title
them the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor.
When you are finished, neatly staple along the left side of the paper and then cut the
st
1 two pages only (do not cut the Plants and Animals page) along the dotted lines to create
a flip book.
Criteria:
Your project must:
o be your personal best work
o be colorful
o be neat (you may draw light pencil lines to help with writing)
o have no misspellings
o have accurate information
o include all three completed pages
On page 1, your project must include:
o a colorful and clear drawing of a temperate rainforest
o clearly show three layers of a temperate rainforest (Canopy, Understory, and
Forest Floor)
o labels on each layer
On page 2, your project must include:
o a physical description of each layer
o at least 1 fact you found interesting about each layer
On page 3, your project must include:
o 2 plants with a reason they survive there for each layer
o 2 animals with a reason they survive there for each layer

Layers of the Temperate Forest Timeline
This is a fun and interesting theme project! Please be aware that there are only 3 weeks/2
weekends of work time for this particular project. By using this schedule, you will be able to
stay on track and have enough time to work on each section!
Week One: Take notes about the features of the 3 layers from the website(s) you choose
and/or from any books you may have at home.
Week Two: Using your notes, write about the physical descriptions and interesting facts of
each layer on the appropriate sheet. (You may want to do a rough draft on a separate sheet of
paper). Have a parent edit for spelling. Also, get started on the writing for the plants and
animals section.
Week Three: Finish writing about the plants and animals. Read over everything you have
written, editing for spelling and word choice. Finally, create a detailed, personal best drawing
depicting the 3 layers. Please use colored pencils only!
