Oakwood Primary School Sandpiper Road
SOUTHAMPTON SO16 8FD
Issue 6
22 July 2015
Dear Parents
This time last year, I wrote that we’d started as infant and junior schools and finished
as a new Primary School.
We’ve now completed a full year as Oakwood Primary School, and I can’t believe
where the time has gone! And look what we have achieved…
Another round of great academic results, more sporting success, our recognition as
both a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and Gold Investor in People, further progress
towards Eco-Schools and Travel Plan awards, our lead work as a Stonewall Training
Partner and… finally, our Linkway completed so that we are physically one building.
Today, we are saying goodbye to Ilona Smith, who has been teaching in Year R this
year. Miss Smith is moving on to work as a teacher at an education centre in the local
area. We wish her the very best of luck!
Tom Ackland also has a busy summer - he is getting married! - and in the first few
days of next term, Gemma Fawcitt will start her maternity leave. I know you will join
us in wishing them both all the best.
Thank you for all your support this year! We value your part in Achieving
Excellence Together.
Have a very good summer break.

Article 31
Every child has the
right to relax, play
and take part in a
wide range of cultural
and artistic
activities..
Goodbye Year 6!
We’ve had a fantastic, if somewhat emotional,
few days, celebrating Year 6’s time at
Oakwood and saying a fond farewell as they
move on to their new schools.
We are so proud of all they have achieved and
hope that a few may pop back to visit us in the
future to update us with their ongoing
successes!
News from the
Team!
Beat that queue!
Just a reminder that you don’t have to queue if you just need to drop off letters /
slips / dinner money etc. Please use the secure locked blue box on the wall just
inside reception which is emptied regularly during the day.
Contacts
Please remember to inform the office at any time should any of your details change.
It is important that we have the correct information in case we need to contact you
in case of an emergency during the day. Thank you.
PE Kit
As we move into the new academic year, please remember that children should have
their PE kit in school at all times. Although each class has set PE days, sometimes
these might change at short notice and we advise that PE kit should come into
school on a Monday and only go home at the weekend. If your child does not have
their PE kit when needed, we might give you a quick ring to let you know and to see
if you are able to bring it in in time for their lesson. PE kit should be a plain white tshirt, black shorts and trainers. When the weather is cold, we recommend a plain,
dark tracksuit.
Bikes
If your child wishes to bring a bike / scooter to school and use our cycle shelter,
please come to the office to collect and complete a permit form. The bike / scooter
will need to be locked and children will need to wear a helmet, which they can bring
into school and leave on their peg. Also just a reminder to encourage your children
to dismount their bike / scooter whilst on site, particularly in the playground. Thank
you.
Pharmacy First
Starting in the new school year, the majority of pharmacies in Southampton will be
providing a new minor ailments service, called ‘Pharmacy First’. The aim is for
patients to be able to receive advice and support for minor health issues from the
local pharmacist, rather than waiting for a doctor’s appointment or visiting the walk
in centre. Look out for a leaflet that will be coming your way in September.
Achievements
We have very much enjoyed seeing so many children for a wide range of
achievements this year - from Gold Book to Spellings, from Handwriting to Times
Tables. It’s a real pleasure to see your children’s love of learning and the pride they
take in their hard work.
We would like to wish everyone a relaxing and enjoyable summer, and look forward
to seeing you all again in September!

News from the OSA
Your parent association, your way of getting involved!
Many thanks for all your support over the last school year. We
ended the year with the Summer Fete which raised a record amount of
£2378!
The year has also seen events such as the Christmas Fair, book sales, discos,
Quiz Night, shopping afternoon, Secret Room and non-uniform days! We also
introduced parent coffee mornings which have proved very successful.
As a result of some of these activities, we were able to present a cheque to
the school in January for £7000. This is an amazing sum of money which
would not have been possible without your help and support at these events.
We have already started planning for the autumn term with the Christmas
Fair on Monday 30 November. Discos and the Secret Room day are all
being organised and will appear on the school calendar. We will look forward
to seeing you at some of these!
If you are having a sort out over the holidays, we would be pleased to receive
any donations of good condition cuddly toys, children’s books, games etc as
well as small items that would be suitable for lucky dips. New or unused
toiletries are also welcome. Please take any items to the office in September.
Thank you.

News from the House Captains
Ventura - Britannia - Azura - Adonia
We can’t believe how fast our time at Oakwood has gone and that we are writing our final piece for the
newsletter.
This term, we have lots to celebrate – Adonia won the Sports Day cup; Ventura won the Attendance Cup and Inter-House
Sports Cup; Azura won the House Points Cup – we have been proud to accept these awards on behalf of our Houses.
We have had a packed few final days in Year 6 – starting with our Production which we all
thoroughly enjoyed. We had an emotional farewell at our Leaver’s Service and we
would like to thank Year R for our candle holders – we think we might be keeping
hold of these for a long time!
Finally, we look forward to our Prom tonight and we all agree that we have had the
best seven years during our time at Oakwood. We really have enjoyed “Achieving
Excellence Together”!

The Easter weekend will be at the start of the fortnight break in 2016.

Please bear this in mind if you are booking holidays.
School Calendar 2015 - 2016
It seems that every half term this year has been jam-packed with Sports, but during the Summer
2 term there has been so much it has been difficult to know where to start!
Perhaps we should start with our biggest sports event of the year, Sports Day! It was another
year of sunshine, sports and smiles. KS2 started the day with their roundabout of activities before
the house relay races and Year group sprint champion races took place. Amazingly, new records
were set in six of the eight KS2 sprint races. After a quick break for a picnic with families, KS1
children took on their own roundabout of activities before the KS1 Sprint Champion races finished
off the afternoon in style.
Well done to winners on the day, Adonia. But will they be able to earn back to back wins with
victory next year?

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers
Thank you for all for vouchers over the last 3 months, we
managed to collect just over 40,000. We have already ordered
our equipment and the first boxes arrived at the start of the
week. Yr R are already busy using their new play equipment,
whilst Mrs Browne and the rest of KS1 are waiting excitedly for
the new break/lunchtime scooters to be put together by Mr
Barrett. We also expect a delivery of tennis, rugby, football,
cricket and rounders balls as well as a whole range of other
equipment before the end of the school term.
Inter-House Sports Cup
As well as taking part in sports day, children from each KS2 year group have been representing
their houses in the Inter-house sports cup which we launched last year; Britannia are the current
holders. There have been 8 rounds, 2 for each year group, throughout the year. Children have
competed in a whole range of competitions; Hockey, Football, Tag rugby, Benchball, Rounders,
Cricket, Netball and Inter House Benchball. A massive well done to this year’s winning
house, VENTURA!
Federation competitions
As well as taking part in competitions in school, we have
continued to participate in competitions with other schools.
A team of Y5 children recently took part in a Federation
rounders tournament and came home with winners’ medals
following comprehensive victories over all other participating
teams. Well done!
A team of 24 children from Y2-6 also took part in the 3rd
Lordshill and Redbridge Federation Sports Day hosted by
Fairisle Junior School. And for the second time in three
years, Team Oakwood were champions!
KS1 Personal Best Day
KS1 children have taken part in their final Personal Best Day of the 2014/15 year. Run by our
resident Sports coaches, TMC (Testlands Multisports Coaches), our Personal Best days are to
encourage all our children to take part in sporting activity and engage in competition. By only
competing against themselves they are encouraged to improve at skills and set their own ‘Personal
Best’ scores in a whole range of challenges. Each class only has an hour session to practice and
set scores so it’s quite intense, but all the children love the wide range of challenges TMC set
them.
KS2 Club of the Month
The KS2 Club of the Month sessions have been running for 3 years now and have been a great
success, but our July Club of the Month, Romsey and Abbey Tennis Club, will be the last in its
current format. During the last three years we have introduced 12 different local sports clubs to the
children and taken part in at least another 12 special sporting activities and events. We will
continue to inspire our children to take part in sport outside of school but we look forward to
launching our new initiative in September.
Sainsbury’s School Games
Oakwood has taken part in a wide range of
the Sainsbury’s school games events this
year and has had some great success in
competition. The games have also enabled
a large number of children to take part in
semi-competitive skills festivals in a
number of sports.
Most recently, we have competed in the
Y3/4 Tennis competition held at the David
Lloyd Tennis Centre. Twelve teams took
part in the two mini leagues run on the
day, Oakwood finishing 5th, which was a
great achievement for the four Y4 children
who went.
The biggest School Games event also took
place during the Summer 2 term, the City
Athletics Championships. The team finished
a marvellous 4th, in what was a very
difficult year with children from Townhill
and Bitterne dominating the podiums.
Oakwood is very proud to announce that
two of our children returned as City
Champions, Marcus and Amy, who also
returned with a new City Record Fantastic effort!

The Numbers
This year 156 different children have
had a chance to wear the Oakwood colours
and represent the school. This is a
staggering number and shows just how
well we’re doing at giving as many children
as possible an opportunity in sport. Roll on
