Dallas Habitat Neighborhood Profile
Oak Cliff Gardens is located in East Oak Cliff behind the Veterans
Affairs Hospital. It is a residential neighborhood, home to families
and small, local churches. Similar to many neighborhoods in
southern Dallas, it has been affected by crime, depopulation,
aging homes, and crumbling infrastructure.
Dallas Habitat began working in Oak Cliff Gardens in 2004. A
total of 116 homes have been built and 65 homes have been
repaired through the A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) program.
The neighborhood was home to the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter
Work Project in 2014, bringing thousands of volunteers to the
area to build and repair homes. The Carter Work Project also
publicized the revitalization and growth that has occurred in the
neighborhood.
