Issue #20
Glenmoor Wildcats
Dear Parent,
This week in reading readiness we will review
the sounds of a, d, h, m, n, o, p, s, and t. We will be
working listen to sounds at the beginning and end of
words. We will also introduce the sound of short /i/
as in pig at the end of the week. Last week we sent
home a book of poems. These poems can be very
helpful to remind them of the sound and letters. We
have published it in the order we will introduce the
sounds. Remember to use the game sheets in your
child’s folder to review letters and sounds. These are
all sounds taught to date. They should know their
alphabet letters with automaticity. Please continue to
work the letter names.
Some children are still forming the letters
incorrectly and some are still using capital letters in
the middle of their name. Could you help reinforce
correct formation and when to use capital/lower case
letters at home with the homework. There is a correct
formation page in your homework folder. Remember!
Letters NEVER start at the bottom of the line. I will
start a penmanship book in class. Please monitor at
home.
In science we will continue to learn about
winter weather and look at animals that enjoy the
cold. We will study penguins and learn about some of
their habits. We will hear several stories of Tacky the
Penguin and Cuddly Dudley.
Just a few quick reminders of dates. February
14th is our “Friendship Day”, this is a minimum day.
We have some activities planned. We will need parent
help on this day. We hope you can come and help!
Pease let me know. We will be doing about five
activities. I enclosed information.
Some parents have asked us about Valentines.
The children will pass out Valentines to their own
class. Please have your child sign his/her own name
on the back of Valentine. DO NOT write the other
child’s name because they will randomly drop into the
other children’s bag. There are 24 students in the
class. The children will pass out their Valentines on
January 30, 2017
the 9th and the 10th. Please have your valentines
here by that date. It is too hectic to pass them out at
the party. The children will take them home on the
14th.
I have enclosed the order of the writing for
homework and the proof reading marks and
questions for editing. This is an important part of the
process. We always learn from our mistakes. If we
can see them, then we can correct them. Please allow
your child to make the mistake and be able to correct
it on Thursdays. Also remember to let them spell.
This is practice for hearing first, middle, and last
sounds.
January 28th was the starting of the Lunar
New Year. Xin Nian Kuai Le or Gong Hey Fat Choy.
We will read some stories about different customs
that happen at this time of the year.
Tip #3 Worlds Best Thinking Game: 20
questions for developing critical thinking skills. Think
of an object: I’m thinking of something in this room.
Your child has 20 chances to guess the object with a
simple “yes” or “no”. When it is your turn, set
examples by asking questions that classify and
define, such as: “Is it alive?, “Is it bigger than the
couch?” Is it something you wear?”
