For Immediate Release The Opposite House presents “Prajñāpāramitā” by Ye Hongxing (Beijing, 24 April 2017) – The Opposite House is pleased to present “Prajñāpāramitā” by Ye Hongxing, a Beijing-based artist who has become one of the most exciting rising stars in the Chinese contemporary art scene. Ye’s works have been exhibited at several international shows, including Art Cologne, Art Basel, the 7th annual exhibition of sculptures and installations in Venice, and numerous exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Singapore, United States and India. In partnership with Art Lexï ng and Red Gate Gallery, “Prajñāpāramitā” was previously exhibited at EAST, Miami, a sister hotel in the United States of America, and was one of the key installations during Miami Art Week also known as Art Basel in 2016. “Prajñāpāramitā” opens with a mandala-inspired art piece, which is a threedimensional rework of traditional Tibetan Buddhism symbols. Comprised of Ye’s signature material – thousands of children’s stickers, the mandala is placed flat on a surface with every form and detail consisting of colourful, jewellery-like stickers. To convey ideas on contemporary culture, Ye chose to use stickers rather than paint images to project an astonishing visual impact. The extensive amount of stickers represents the overload of information people receive on a daily basis. Children’s toys occupy the centre of the mandala and have been arranged to resemble a pagoda. Pagodas were originally designed to house sacred Buddhist relics and writings. The children’s toys illustrate the relics of an innocent period. The mandala installation is followed with “A Thousand Years of Fragrance”, a modern reference to a key practice within Tibetan and Vajrayana Buddhism – the carving of Mani stones, pebbles or tablets upon which the six-syllable prayer, “Om mani padme hum”, is inscribed. Ye has revised the practice of creating Mani stones by producing a series of white marble sculptures in the shapes of common perfume and beverage bottles in modern society. “Ye Hongxing’s work has truly represented how society and culture have changed in the past years,” says Mark Passmore, General Manager of The Opposite House. “The bottles explore the possibility of inner peace in an increasingly wired and distracted world. The hand-applied colourful stickers reflect Ye’s belief in celebrating and embracing the wonder of joy in life.” “Prajñāpāramitā” may be viewed at the hotel’s Atrium from now to the end of June 2017. “Prajñāpāramitā” “Prajñāpāramitā” “Prajñāpāramitā” “Prajñāpāramitā” “A Thousand Years of Fragrance” The Opposite House -Ends- About The Opposite House The Opposite House is located in Taikoo Li Sanlitun — a vibrant new open-plan shopping, dining and entertainment destination developed by Swire Properties.
